Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJuly 5, 2024 at 9:50 pm #259242FYI here,
Last night (Thursday night) the Dodger announcers were talking about the fact that the Redbirds had traded away Sandy Alcantara and Zac Gallen. He then made a comment that he was glad the Cards had not traded away any really good position players. He then jokingly mentioned Randy Arozarena and Adolis Garcia.I got the impression he was taking a jab at St. Louis.

July 5, 2024 at 9:59 pm #259243I got the impression he was taking a jab at St. Louis.
Did he have a picture of Mo in the background with a dart sticking in his nose?
July 5, 2024 at 11:58 pm #259247The Doyers do the Cards a favor. They came from behind to beat Milwaukee 8-5. A two out bases loaded single by Freeman in the last of the 8th broke the tie. Will Smith had three (3) big dongs in this one for the Doyers. Redbirds now just five games out.
And the Padres stay in the thick of the WC race. Arizona trailed 7-2 heading to the 9th but scored six runs to take the 8-7 lead. Machado won it in the last of the 9th with a two run dinger 10-8.
Time to go and watch Dragnet and Sergeant Joe Friday.

July 6, 2024 at 9:32 am #259262FWIW, this season, Arozarena’s OPS+ is exactly the same as that of Nolan Gorman (91). Maybe the Cards could trade the one for the other? 😉
July 6, 2024 at 9:49 am #259265Nice to see our club battle and win our share of close games. It is still a nagging factor that we get outscored though. The best teams win a lot of games with relative ease, like 7-2, 6-1 and those type of scores. We have not shown that we can do that.
To win, we rely on good pitching, and a lucky break here and there, plus a clutch hit or two.
Our record is a bit of a mirage. Still it is nice to get those games and be above .500, as you think if we ever do really click on all cylinders the sky’s the limit. But we have played half a season this way, which tells me we are what we are – a good step forward from the last place team of 2023, but not ready to dance with cheerleaders.
July 6, 2024 at 10:19 am #259268Good pitching, good defense, timely hitting. Seems like i heard thats the recipe for winning.
July 6, 2024 at 10:54 am #259270It is a recipe for winning, but like any recipe, it doesn’t work well with a missing ingredient. In this case it is effective middle of the order power bats. Contreras returning will help with that, but we all know the problem remains.
July 6, 2024 at 11:03 am #259271Timely hitting is sporadic and random. You can go a couple of weeks where it is not happening.
To overcome being overly dependent on .650-.700 OPS guys to get their hits mostly in run scoring situations, you need a couple of guys in your lineup having .900+ OPS seasons. Then you know you are going to get production on a much more consistent basis.
July 6, 2024 at 11:57 am #259278Taking a peek at Rat’s late night baseball scores recap, it looks like there was plenty of good baseball action out in California last night. I knew there was a reason I always liked Freeman…Freddie can flat out hit!
July 6, 2024 at 12:19 pm #259280First round draft choices batting 7 and 8 in the lineup today. That’s a pretty long lineup, potentially. Also, Burleson playing his 3rd different position in the last three games.
July 6, 2024 at 12:34 pm #259283Getting Noot, Herrera, and Edman back, replacing Fermin, Pages, and (? Carlson?) should help with the offense. And should make it easier to give guys a day off. Dunno that we are who we are is right here. But they do need more from Arenado and Goldie, and they do need to win some laughers.
I’ll be at the game today. I have a bad feeling about this one. Terribly hot day with a spent bullpen facing a good pitcher. But if we lose you can blame me for this one!
July 6, 2024 at 12:38 pm #259285The Pirates ripped 7 taters vs. the Mets yesterday. Reynolds hit 2 of those HR’s to go along with his 6 RBI’s. Wish we could add a bat like his to the lineup.
July 6, 2024 at 12:39 pm #259286Enjoy the game, G!
July 6, 2024 at 12:45 pm #259288I don’t worry too much about the run differential. Baseball has always been about pitching and defense and it always will be because those two elements are less likely to go in a slump as offense.

gs-The pitching and defense point actually makes me have hope for the postseason. If we don’t blow out the bullpen, I could see us winning some low scoring games. But….I worry a lot about blowing out the pen. And having some blowouts in which the fringier relievers can carry the action instead of the big four would help on that front.
July 6, 2024 at 12:58 pm #259293Yeah, run differential didn’t help the Yankees in the ’60 WS. A lot of scorecards read 55-27, but the Pirates settled the score with a 4-3 WS championship.
July 6, 2024 at 1:02 pm #259295Hey Bling, I took a guess on the interference rule in the event of a sac-bunt attempt. Afterwards I tried to look it up and it’s still sketchy…Haha! What’s the answer?
July 6, 2024 at 1:15 pm #259298TD, I can remember knowing the answer, but I can’t remember the answer. If that makes any sense. It is something that came up now and then back when that sort of play was commonplace.
July 6, 2024 at 1:22 pm #259300It makes perfect sense, Bling. I spent a minute or two checking around and the best I can tell is that it falls under the judgement of the HPU, which is always an adventure…Haha! In any case, it’s a good question and I went into a bit more detail on the other thread.
July 6, 2024 at 1:23 pm #259301I hope that Gorman can continue the burst of success he has had lately. The .146 BA wRISP prior to yesterday is just an absolute killer in a lineup. At least he has been moved down for now. That chips away at the problem. Contreras returning chips away at it too. They will chip away all around the main problem. That is probably not going to be enough to compete in post season, especially since the main problem is also a pair of post season chokers.
July 6, 2024 at 1:27 pm #259302I’d trade Gorman for Reynolds…Haha!
July 6, 2024 at 1:58 pm #259306Din din on this late Saturday afternoon will be a Hungry Man’s Roasted Turkey TV dinner, some Sun Chips, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. I’ll save the Cherry Delight for tonight’s late night snack.
Din din will occur at the time of the first pitch. Then after din din it will be time for a Cuban Sandwich 7×50 Especiales cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog are on the couch. And if the Cards/Nats game turns into a blowout we can always switch over to the Tigers and Reds game from Crosley Field in Cincinnati.

July 6, 2024 at 2:48 pm #259309Just another example of how the world we live in doesn’t make nonsense sometimes is that despite no ER’s being charged to Helsley, he’s saddled with a blown save as the result of a make believe fairy tale runner coming around to score.
