For the second time tonight, Burleson pulled a grounder to the right side to advance the runner to third. This one turned out to be the winning run. Funny how a groundout can be clutch. There is no substitute for being able to put it in play.

You sure did, Bikemike. In the game of baseball if it’s possible, it’ll happen…Haha!

BikeMike, it didn’t go unnoticed by me! But thanks for calling it out . . .

Although the runner in the scenario the other night isn’t running on contact because he isn’t under the same pressure to score. So not quite apples to apples. But still, I fully acknowledge that it can happen.

Cardinals with 14 hits tonight including an 4 for 5 night for Arenado and a 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s for Gorman after he entered the game to PH for Carlson in the 8th. Obviously the hit that saved us was the game tying tater from Contreras in the 9th.

I watched the Nats broadcast and post game they were analyzing why they lost. I’m paraphrasing here, but the analyst said because they keep making the same types of stupid mistakes over and over.

He pointed out Winker being thrown out at 3B (by Lib I think) on the sac bunt attempt. Said it was a good bunt, but Winker got a terrible secondary lead and that’s why Martinez was lecturing him in the dugout later. Then he mentioned the unexplainable passed ball on a pitch right down the middle where Contreras struck out and Winn scored the winning run. Finally, he said Nunez was not going on contact on the Yepez lineout double play. Said it was just not being smart and gave a stat where evidently the Nats lead the universe in outs at 3B. Sounded like the travails of the Cards not too long ago.

I don’t want to jump the gun, but the Cardinals took on the look of a good team tonight. I’m also seeing a surge in both energy and enthusiam on the field and in the dugout. That’s what always happens when a baseball team places W’s in the books.

Yeah, I thought the sac-bunt attempt by DC in the 8th was not only a lousy effort, but also a horrible strategy, Euro. I mean, they already had a 1 run lead playing at home and they get an 8th inning lead-off double from Winker. They’re playing at home with a 1 run lead for goodness sake and they attempt a sac- bunt? Plain stupid in my view. After the FC out at 3rd they get a base hit from Garcia that would have scored the baserunner that they just burned. They deserved to lose.

The sac bunt is not a tactic which can fail gracefully. I think that’s why a failed attempt never looks like it was a good idea.

Here is a question for all of you worthies. What are the rules as to interference between batter and catcher on a sec bunt attempt. It comes into play with a batter standing in from the right side and the base runner attempting to advance to third base, which was the case last night.

It seems like the batter should be entitled to remain standing in the batters box, or to run toward first base unimpeded. If that is the case, the batter could choose which to do depending upon where the bunted ball went.

Well, they’ve had to go extra innings in the last three consecutive games and won two of three against two losing teams. Granted, 2-1 is better than 1-2 or 0-3, but they aren’t playing the big boys, either… For example, Patrick Corbin is regularly pummeled by offenses, coming into the game with a 5.49 ERA that was second worst among all NL qualifying starters. Last night, Corbin outpitched Gray.

Since taking 2 of 3 from the Braves, the Cards are 5-3 vs. losing teams from Cincy, Pittsburgh and Washington while being outscored 37-32.

I’ll wait to get excited until they start beating good teams regularly. But I agree it is a start.

Well, you’re right, they could implode at a moment’s notice, but they’re 16-9 in their last 25 games which is a decent sized stretch of games. They’re also 5 over after at one time sinking to as low as 9 games under the .500 mark, so they certainly haven’t packed it in when they looked as though they might. I’ll also say that, in my view, those closely contested games can help a team in the sense that it may dial up a bit more of a competitive spirit and camaraderie with the fellas. Especially when you’re winning a few of those games by overcoming a defecit or games that could tip either way in the late innings or extras. They’re certainly not intimidating the competition like some of the TLR led teams of the past, but like you mentioned, they took 2 of 3 from the Braves and they swept a 3 game series from a pretty good team in the O’s earlier in the season. In any case, this season’s without question an improvement over ’23 thus far and I’ve enjoyed watching the last few weeks. Some of the kids are turning in some nice performances and you really can’t get much better entertainment than a turn in the rotation from “The Bavarian Bismark Beast”…Haha!

I don’t know. Good question and yeah, I’d guess there’d have to be some guidelines in place to prevent the hitter from being able to pick and choose to his liking. I’d have to look that one up to be certain, Bling, but I’d guess it may be a sort of a judgement call by the HPU.

I will take a win against anyone. It is better than the alternative. We have seen the Cardinals struggle this year against the likes of the White Sox, Rockies, and Marlins so every victory should be savored.

I’d say so, GS. No matter who you play, the opponent has no bearing on how a W or L affects the standings.

If there’s a standings race, those head to head matchups pay well, if you play well.

Yeah, I’d say there’s no question that you want to play well vs. quality competition. Even the teams that are buried and have no chance tend to amp up their game when playing a contender and presented with an opportunity to play spoiler. And obviously one of the tell tale signs of a good team is the ability to compete against a talented and contending opponent.
