Maybe we should hold on to Pages.
I don’t think anyone said the Cards should get rid of Pages. He can be optioned back to the minors this year, as well as 2025 and 2026, if needed. A good depth piece making minimum salary.
The main question on the table was whether or not to trade Herrera away, keeping Pages with StL full time.
Regarding the other back up catchers you mentioned, here are their career OPS+ marks:
Pages 70
Barrera 76
Romine 65
Wieters 93
Pena 52
and I added one – Knizner 67Yep, Pages fits.
July 11, 2024 at 8:21 pm #260043Shelton decided to give the game to his BP after Skenes had worked 7 innings on 99 pitches.
1td, didn’t you hear? Shelton said it “…..didn’t have anything to do with the pitch count…..It’s about where he was at. It was about trusting your eyes, trusting him.”
As you say, times have changed, but golly, eyesight evidently has changed big-time, hehehe!
July 11, 2024 at 8:37 pm #260044On the catcher conversation, (not for 2024) but how is Crooks framing, blocking, throwing, etc? There isn’t much out there on that for him. It seems like the bat should be at least average.
July 11, 2024 at 8:37 pm #260045Presently, I don’t think they have any choice but to keep him. They already have a catcher that can hit, so I’d say they know it’s in their best interest to keep Pages securely in the paddock while Herrera is entirely expendable.
July 11, 2024 at 8:40 pm #260046Yeah Euro, it wasn’t too long ago than even if a SP’er had allowed a hit or two he probably would have liked to have a chance at a shutout.
July 12, 2024 at 10:00 am #260061What’s remarkable is that Skenes was working on a no hitter thru 7 full when Shelton sat him down. Times sure have changed.
If Ollie had done that Brian would have probably had to shut this site down due to all of the expletives and profanity.
July 12, 2024 at 10:08 am #260063It’s the second time this season Skenes was pulled out of a no hitter.
July 12, 2024 at 10:24 am #260065I’ll be darned, Bling. I wonder how many outs he needed to record the no hitter the first time they removed him from the game.
July 12, 2024 at 11:33 am #260069He went six innings last time. I read something where the coach said its not a pitch count thing, but in both no hitters he was pulled at 100 pitches, and that seems like how long he is going in his starts. I think the only record book anyone is interested in anymore is career earnings. Maybe that is for the best if the great 200 wins puppy dog event last year is any indication.
July 12, 2024 at 1:41 pm #260076Yeah, and it makes sense. Obviously the ink on the currency is worth more than the ink on the books. No hitters and shutouts and even CG’s will go the way of the 300 game winner and the internal combustion powerplant.
July 13, 2024 at 6:56 am #260152The last 3 games have been hard to watch (or listen to). At this point, the question for me is are the Cardinals willing to do what it takes to try and jumpstart this lethargic offense. And we all know what that is.

I think that depends upon whether you are talking doing the absolute minimum that might work, or doing something more substantial.
In my mind the absolute minimum would be burying Goldy, Arenado and Gorman at the bottom of the batting order, and replacing one of Carp or Crawford with a useful bench guy who is a professional hitter type. I think that is theoretically possible. They could do it when Edman returns. But the reality is, they are not going to bury the bronze busts. They aren’t going to bat Gorman 9th. I am not sure if Mo would replace Carp or Crawford. As of now, it is not necessary to do any of that to hang in the WC race, so I doubt they will.
July 13, 2024 at 8:45 am #260162The bloated playoffs system has removed the need to be good. Just don’t be horrible and most seasons you can beat your chest about ‘making the playoffs’.
It had happened in every single pro sport – it’s not just baseball. It still stinks imo.
July 13, 2024 at 10:47 am #260166100% Blingboy. They wont even do the bare minimum.

Very true and it is all because of revenue. The owners fear that fans of teams not in the race will stop coming to the park so instead we all get a watered down mediocre product. It is like in little league when everyone gets a trophy!

Do all the no shows at Busch last season and earlier this year prove they are right?
July 13, 2024 at 1:33 pm #260188Do all the no shows at Busch last season and earlier this year prove they are right?
It probably does. Maybe all 30 teams should be eligible for the playoffs. Cha ching! $$$
August 3, 2024 at 2:52 pm #262860The Cardinals just have not been able to get the consistent “pop” needed, this season, from the 4 and 5 spots in the lineup. At least two of these four needed to produce at a high level at 4 and 5. Goldschmidt, Arenado, Gorman or Walker. It just hasn’t happened.
August 12, 2024 at 7:55 pm #264022Since there was a lot of catcher discussion on this thread, I will put this here.
Ivan Herrera has allowed 41 stolen bases in 345.2 innings caught this year.
Pedro Pages has allowed 39 stolen bases in 343.1 innings caught this year. https://t.co/Hj0HK4FZNq

August 12, 2024 at 8:52 pm #264033We don’t throw runners out and we don’t steal bases either.

jj-cf-stlParticipantHey Kareem, ratios matter.
18% caught stealing, 18%, 7% (Herrera)
He’s met his agenda tho.August 13, 2024 at 8:12 am #264055The owners fear that fans of teams not in the race will stop coming to the park

No, it’s the opposite. The Cardinals are in the hunt for the playoffs, but they still have an inordinate amount of no-shows.
The fans can see that this team is really not a playoff caliber team, even though they are “competing” for a playoff spot.
August 13, 2024 at 8:20 am #264056Speaking of no-shows, maybe Cardinals management can learn something from the fans this year.
A large portion of the fan base has realized a sunk cost – they don’t show up to games for which they have paid. They realize greater value by viewing the expense as a sunk cost and doing things that provide greater entertainment at additional cost.
Cardinals management has been reluctant to move on from bad contracts and is content with mediocrity on the field as long as the turnstiles are turning. Well, now they are not turning. Maybe the Cardinals should start eating some sunk costs like the fans are doing.
August 13, 2024 at 8:28 am #264057Great point on catcher comparison, jj. 18% is not great, but 7% is ugly.
August 13, 2024 at 8:48 am #264060I think a lot of no shows are company owned season tickets that nobody wants to use.
