Well it is from The Athletic. Ardeya is their beat writer for the Dodgers, basically the Dodgers version of Katie Woo. He probably has sources within the Dodger organization.
July 28, 2024 at 4:08 pm #261914Forced to be creative with any additions they make before the MLB Trade Deadline because of financial constraints, the Cardinals are hopeful that another team will claim Gallegos, 32, off waivers for the financial flexibility it will allow them.
The Cardinals front office has been informed by management that the club is not positioned to take on significant additional salary in coming years via a trade, per the source.
Bally’s rears it’s ugly head again.
For those hoping for some blockbuster. We are hopeful someone takes Gallegos because that is pretty much the money we have to spend. So when he goes unclaimed we’ll likely be shopping at Dollar General and Dollar Tree this deadline season.
July 28, 2024 at 4:49 pm #261916They could spend some of the Goldy payroll cut in advance.

ParticipantUnfortunately, most of the Goldschmidt savings will be offset by the +$15mm and +$30mm (incl buyout) increases in Sonny Gray’s annual salary over the next two years.
July 28, 2024 at 6:57 pm #261930On the “buyers or sellers” thing, I look at it this way. If management could get a couple of top prospects for say Goldy and Gibson, I would go the seller route. If there is not much interest and you would only get a marginal guy or two, then play the “buyer” angle and see if you can get a decent return for Carlson; someone who could mostly help this year and maybe next.
But don’t go all-in as sellers and deal guys like Walker or Herrera. Sort of play the middle and do whichever is the most beneficial.
Personally I think they will act like buyers and add something, but likely not enough to make much difference. But hey, you never know. We might bring in some low hanging fruit and they go on a two month tear, making us look like geniuses. It has happened. 1964 we bring up the aging Barney Schultz, who was playing out the string in the minors, and he has the best two month stretch of his career – he went all “Hoyt Wilhelm” for us.

jj-cf-stlParticipantLol, so now they’re tapped out.

ParticipantMike, sounds like the perfect encapsulation of the current “Cardinal Way”: stuck “in the middle,” neither a decisive buyer or seller. It’s the logical tactical extension of their stated strategy: “Compete every year” with a mid-market payroll (and below average farm system).
That treadmill for the 2nd or 3rd wild card never stops . . .
July 28, 2024 at 7:14 pm #261934Need a Cedeno or a Will the Thrill and it’ll help us play a lot better in September…”I’ll tell you that!”
July 28, 2024 at 8:08 pm #261942I am tired of the Bally excuse, as if the other teams don’t have TV contracts, either.
I would bet the house that mediocre baseball, leading to empty seats, are hurting the Cards more than lower TV ratings or worry about the TV contract in the future (this year’s money is being paid per the contract, I believe), but the media takes the less uncomfortable explanation.
July 28, 2024 at 8:51 pm #261945It just needs to fool the nacho munchers Brian.

Hey I get it but a couple other teams have thrown out the Bally’s excuse as well. So they’ll play it up as much as they can.
It appears the owners and our POBO are poor in communicating the budget or restraints. Bowtie goes out and said they’ll look for upgrades but it appears ownership doesn’t want to spend the money or wants to swap contracts to even things out (Edman).

Unfortunately, most of the Goldschmidt savings will be offset by the +$15mm and +$30mm (incl buyout) increases in Sonny Gray’s annual salary over the next two years.Even with exercising both Lynn and Gibson’s options, we are about $15-16M under the 2024 payroll for 2025.
July 29, 2024 at 9:46 am #261996RBK
ParticipantYes, I said “most,” not all. For just 2025, Goldschmidt is -$26mm and Gray is +$15mm. So for one year, those two net to -$11mm (which is subsequently entirely consumed–and then some–by Gray’s scheduled increase the following year). Then you have the arb increases, which will affect the Y/Y comparison.
I agree they will have some incremental money for 2025, but how much depends on what they do with the options–if they don’t exercise them, they’ll still have to fill the rotation slots from somewhere. If they do exercise them, they won’t have a ton of incremental space if they hold the line on payroll (unless they alter the roster further through additional transactions to create more room).
July 29, 2024 at 10:33 am #262001What a mess of a FO.
July 29, 2024 at 10:52 am #262004Cardinals are pushing for Erick Fedde. Nothing definitive but some momentum there.

ParticipantWhite Sox asking for Walker. Fedde for Walker…. where do I sign.
July 29, 2024 at 4:32 pm #262104July 29, 2024 at 4:35 pm #262107I guess I don’t know how to paste a twitter link.
Anyway, Mo basically saying for now Carlson is still a Cardinal. But we have an obvious outfield crunch.
July 29, 2024 at 4:46 pm #262112I have to think Carlson gets traded or optioned to Memphis in the next 24 hours.
July 29, 2024 at 4:53 pm #262115I’d rather he is optioned because I believe his value is lower right now than the player he is. But I guess for him personally, it would be better to get traded. So hopefully they find a team willing to make us a solid offer.
July 29, 2024 at 6:03 pm #262134I’m sure that OPS+ of 47 is attracting plenty of attention.
July 29, 2024 at 6:24 pm #262139Mo just has to convince potential trading partners of the almost certain change of scenery bounce. He’s armed with a few examples of convincing evidence to cite.
July 29, 2024 at 6:26 pm #262140Pads, unless I am missing something, about $16 million lower payroll in 2025 before signings and arbitration players.
July 30, 2024 at 7:14 am #262209Gallegos had pitched well (era under 3.00) since coming off the dl. If they were trying to save money you wouldn’t dfa a guy without a roster crunch. It lowers any trade value. I think it was a pure baseball decision and a bad one
July 30, 2024 at 7:32 am #262212I get your concern about dumping Gallegos as it is hard to believe he isn’t playable, but I doubt his value took a major hit due to the DFA. Other teams are well aware of him by now, pro and con.
The timing is such that they seem to have wanted to free up Gallegos’ 40-man spot before all the trade deadline moves played out. Now that everyone knows he will be leaving, someone will offer a low level prospect and there will be a trade, I imagine.
