Fryer has 3 hits in his last 37 ABs. Maybe he can change that today, because there is no apparent thump coming from the last four spots in the order today.
Another one of those nights with a lot of sloppy baseball and there’s just one out in the 2nd inning. Cards have already buried themselves this game, down 5-0.
Wacha’s best outing of the year. First time he has gone 7 innings, giving up just 2 hits. He’s at 87 pitches and will evidently pitch into the 8th.
Prospects were MLB Pipeline’s #4, #15, and not top 30 for Arizona. That would correspond to Delvin Perez (4) and Dylan Carlson (15) for the Cards.

Breaks go our way and Cecil gets the save this time. It was starting to look dicey again, but Cards hold on 6-3. Cespedes grounded into a DP on a 3-0 pitch with two runners on base.
You don’t see the little league homer often. Cards defense can provide that. Then Fowler with his patented “oh so cute nonchanlant” catch…that turned out to not be a catch. Cards welcome the Mets right back into the game with some absolutely disgusting baseball.
Mets TV broadcast crew also said DeJong is the first player (regardless of team) to ever homer in his first four games against the Mets.
Defense is as big a culprit as offense if you base it on number of unearned runs yielded. Cards have given up the 10th most in MLB. Yep, there’s a lot that needs to be fixed.
My first reaction is to just say no to moving Carp to OF. He’s hurt us defensively at positions not called first base. However, it’s been so long I don’t remember how he looked when he played OF (it was LF I assume). Maybe he could do as well there as he has at 1B.
As for Pham, he just needs to keep doing what he’s done for the last two and a half months. If some others would break into a more productive mode, then perhaps the Cards would become competitive again for the division.
True…which seems to be a lot easier for him to do when it’s not the 9th inning. It’d be nice if we had someone who could handle the 9th inning stage so Rosenthal could settle in a non-close role.
In fairness to MM, he has no apparent “good” option, but I get the frustration. When the bottom of the 9th started, you just knew the situation was ripe for what happened. Then when he walked Cutch to get to the lefty Bell, it got even riper I thought. Pick your poison I guess, but the splits didn’t favor Oh at all there, which goes back to my original thought of no good option for MM. It’s just who this team is right now.
Unfortunately, this game looked like a few we saw before the break. Cards grabbed an early lead, bats went silent after that, and the pen gave up a big inning late for the loss.
Pham made the last put out in the 6th, with good movement back to the track to make the catch. He then jogged off the field without any apparent limp/problem. He didn’t play after that, so I hope that’s a good indication this is not a problem.
Or maybe it was an in-game situation where Fowler’s foot became aggravated after playing a few innings. I agree with the mindset that if you can run that out for a double, then don’t play. So was it a case of him admiring what he thought was going to be a HR and loafing, or would he have really not been in the game at that point if Pham had not previously been removed? Fowler made a nice catch in the 9th where he had to run fairly hard, which makes it even more questionable. We don’t need a CFer and 3-spot hitter who runs hard only when the situation is crucial — heal up and let the others handle it.
It was a slow bouncer that had to be charged. I don’t think Carp would’ve been thrown out. The other point McCarver was making Carpenter needs to move forward with the 3rd baseman, then if he throws to first, Carp could’ve walked home. Either way, Carp didn’t budge, which is not putting pressure on the defense and poor instincts.
It looked bad, but McCarver and McLaughlin attributed it to his foot. They said he’d probably be out of the game if Pham hadn’t left because of his hip issue. Also, Piscotty not running on his ground out to 3rd was a very bad look. I thought Carp not scoring on Fowler’s grounder to 3rd in the first inning showed poor awareness on the bases, making McCarver sound like he wanted to punch something.
Not being negative–just making observations on something that needs attention by the team. Seriously, other than these two or three things, it was a great game for the redbirds going into the break.
DeJong is turning into quite a story. His development is interesting — looks solid all-around. That includes his defense, other than forgetting to toe-up the bag on a couple of throws he’s received at second. Since he’s not had a lot of reps at SS, you know there’s a lot going through his mind and it isn’t overwhelming him. Wouldn’t it be nice if he ends up giving us solid SS play for the second half?
