I wouldn’t count rehab assignments, which would make it just 6 I think…but if you’re going to count rehab assignments, then I think you could say 8 out of 9.
Cards now just one back of the Brewers in the loss column. Of course, smart money knew the team to beat would be the cubs, who are rolling since the AS break (10-2) and have made a significant move to improve an area of concern.
Looks like it’ll be another save opportunity for our pen tonight.
Edit: maybe not, Cards just went up by four runs. 🙂
I had the same thought on testing Brebbia further. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well Siegrist has looked in his four appearances since returning. He looks like a new guy with the improved command and pitch variation. Just hope it sticks.
I think the Cards are 4-8 against the Cubs now. In most of the Cards’ losses, they have been ahead by 2 or more runs. Too often it’s like the Cubs are just humoring the Cards, seemingly knowing they can toy with them before winning in the later innings. When you’re at this kind of disadvantage, you really can’t afford to have two empty-headed base running decisions…yet again.
Cards just can’t hold a lead. Wacha looks like he’s about done in the 6th after giving up the 2-run shot, and trailing 5-3 now. Matheny looks like he will try to get him through the 6th.
Yep, a lot of fault at all levels. Mozeliak has got to be a leader and say the right things. However, it’s particularly irksome to me that he challenged everyone up and down the line in his June 9 conference, to include himself, saying everyone’s performance will be observed over the next 4-6 weeks and pending decisions will be based on those results. Then, he gets “promoted” three weeks later.
Take all of that into context vis-a-vis his several miscalculations over the last year, and that’s why he is especially annoying to me presently. It’s poor leadership, especially when the biggest overall factor in the Cardinals losing record this year are his miscalculations, imo.
Thinking like a winner is needed, but we need a few more players with winning skills that are currently lacking. Sorry, but Mo’s words mean very little, just like they meant very little over six weeks ago before his “promotion.”
Cards have 2 on, 2 outs in the 9th with Yadi up. Davis has walked two. As big a heartbreaker as this has been, we still have a chance.
And just like that, pen goes from from another save opportunity to probable loss — another late-inning Cardinal meltdown in progress.
Dare I say it…up to the pen now. Wainwright gives up a run in the 8th. Bowman in with a runner on 2nd and two outs. Cards lead 2-1.
DeJong and Grichuk hit back-to-back HRs in the 8th. Cards have a 2-0 lead, Cubs coming to bat in the 8th.
LOL, beer-bellied cubs fan made a really nice catch leaning over the railing on the Grichuk HR. Cards close the gap to 2-1.
Since Fowler’s return from the DL (10 games), he is OPSing 588. Not a good look for the #3….or #2 for that matter. He needs to get it going again.
It’s been six weeks since Mozeliak’s “four to six weeks” press conference. He included himself in that notice on performance expectations. Now that the Cards’ play has reached a low point of embarrassment with Rosenthal’s debacle today, what of significance has been done other than the Mozeliak/Girsch promotion?
Our pen is not only bad, they’re stupid. Rosenthal gives the game away with a walk, a hit and brain stuck in neutral (not covering 1st on grounder)…about what you’d expect, at this point I guess. Seriously, is anybody surprised?
There goes our bullpen being our bullpen again. Cecil gives Flores a hanger and Flores didn’t miss. Game tied now.
