Kind of a lucky bouncing hit by Gonzalez. Not so with Tellez as he whacked it good. Not good.

Lots of teams have struggled vs. Chappy over the years. I mean, he’s 2.60 lifetime and when he first broke in with the Reds he was no joke. I recall a couple of battles he had late in the game with Albert Pujols. It’s the kind of matchup we all pay to see.

Twin killing takes us to the ninth. Again, the main issue tonight is runs. We aren’t getting enough tonight. Come on boys.

I don’t know Rats. I thought about walking him myself but I was indifferent. Gonzalez isn’t all that great of a hitter and he’s not much better against lefties. In the end, he hit a bouncing ball that just bounced through the infield. It happens. I don’t think it was a bad decision going into it. But I could have seen the Cards maybe walking him too and I’d have been ok with that decision as well.

Bednar blows 3 fastballs by Gorman. One run just wasn’t going to do it.

Just a slight whimper before the Cardinals go quietly.

Pallante pitches to a game ERA of 1.50

Only one extra base hit by us. Lineup fail.

King gets the Loss. He faced 5 batters, struck out one and induced four ground balls. Three were singles for a BAbip of .750

MLB’s current BA on grounders is .243

Winning record to date against three of the four other division teams. But they are struggling with Milwaukee. That seems the biggest problem – at least until they play again.

Andre must have used all the groundouts 🙃

One extra base hit. No margin for error.

Cardinals get some help from the Cubbies who win over the Brewers in a 3-1 final and the Reds help out with a 4-1 final over the Braves who are really scuffling for a team that was highly touted by everyone including myself at the start of the season.

Hate to lose one with a performance like that from Pallante.

Better hope regression to Pythagorean expectancy is not a thing, haha. Close losses are the worst. Just noticed the Reds are on the opposite Pythagorean extreme from the Cards. Sucks for them.

TV announcers say the Cubs have officially decided they are sellers at the deadline.

Hoyer says they probably won’t be buyers with the caveat of “how they play the next week.” This time last year they were considered to be sellers, got hot right before the deadline, then became buyers. They then had a very good August only to then faceplant in September and miss the playoffs. They are only 3.5 games out of a wild card spot so if they win a few more games in the coming days they could change their mind.

I’ll worry about the Cubbies if the Cardinals are are either playing or ever looking up at them. Right now, the arithmetic tells me that it’s in the best interest of the Cardinals for the Brewers to be buried.

Other than bragging rights winning the NLC is most likely not going to enhance the chances of the Cardinals advancement in the postseason that much because they would still have to play in the first round. The top two spots and automatic byes will go to the Phillies and Dodgers. Being the 3 seed means first round home field advantage but we saw how much that helped in 2022. And of all people 1td I know that you remember that series.

Yes I want the Cubs to be buried. The Cardinals still have time to catch the Brewers later. If not they can still get in as a wild card.

It is sad that all the third division winner gets is three home games against a wild card. It is the same benefit that the first wild card gets. The only difference is playing the #6 vs. the #5 seed, which is going to be negligible.

For me, the Cubs and Brewers will do whatever they do. But when the Cards play them, they need to do better, especially against the Brewers.

Personally i think its kind of ludicrous for any tean just about to be a seller. Almost every team is in view of a playoff birth. This year above any other in recent memory elevates the idea of anything can happen. Whether it be during the season or in the playoffs. I understand being sellers in seasons where you are way behind and have no obvious chance but its absurd and a great insult to the fans and baseball in general when you are throwing in the towel when u are three or so games out of playoffs. Personslly i wish we didnt have wild cards and if so this would be justified but we do. If you dont want to keep players and pay them what you owe them, just disband the team and drop out of the league.

Since 1995, 16 wild card teams have made it to the world series. Since 1969, only about 26% of the teams that earned the best regular season record in baseball went on to win the world series. And winning 100 games during regular season play many times doesn’t bode well for world series success…..we only need to reflect back to last year where 2023 100 game winners Atlanta, Los Angeles and Baltimore went down to defeat in divisional series action. The playoffs give the lower seeded teams new life and a feeling of equality….that they have just as good a chance to win it all as anyone else. Plus, I feel that a bye isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and can actually be very detrimental for a team. What makes one team more susceptible than another club when not seeing action for a stretch of time could be due to a myriad of factors.
