How long is it reasonable to suffer through lengthy periods of mediocrity, with occasional brief spurts of power, before we decide to cut bait? At what point must a team make up its mind that it has looked long enough at young players like Gorman and Walker, who appear to have the tools to develop into at least slightly above average regulars but haven’t, three years, four years?
Just catching up on the din-din posts 14Nyquist: I guess eating rabbits depends on family tradition. My dad and I used to hunt them, among other things, when I was growing up, nail them up on the wall of the garden shed and skin them for Mom to cook. Guess it must be a dying tradition.
P.S. Sad to say today’s game put me to sleep about half way through.
I’m in the middle of preparing a Sunday din-din of cantaloupe melon, to be followed by rabbit cacciatore and mashed potatoes, and finishing off with fresh raspberries. I’ll then settle in to my easy chair for hopefully a thrashing of these Padres on a perfectly sunny 80-degree day.
Rah Cardinals!Din-din tonight was in fact breakfast. We got back from a brief trip too late to prepare a proper evening repast so I whipped up a quick meal of bacon and waffles slathered in butter and doused with imported Canadian maple syrup, which also obviated the need for dessert. No catfish, hélas.
I, too, could live with a reset, or a complete rebuild, or whatever they would like to call it if they would just get on with the job. But I see no evidence that any effort at all is being made to improve this team. We have wasted two-thirds of a season shifting deck chairs while effectively paying two general managers, neither of whom seems to be doing much of anything.
If I were an MLB GM shopping at the Cardinals store I would be hard pressed to find much I’d want to spend my money on or trade anything of real value for. There might be the odd bit of talent lurking in the bargain basement, but not much.
–My guess is the year was put to good use. The system crashed and burned and fixing it is not just about getting fancier tech.–
It’s difficult to identify where any “fixing” has been done. Same old faces shifting same old deck chairs around on the Titanic.
Looks like it was a perfect game to sleep through nine time zones away, which I did. It’s also a perfect game to not bother watching on MLB TV replay today, which I won’t. Abandon all hope, ye Cardinal fans who enter here and seek what occasional crumbs of joy the second half may bring.
I gave up and went to bed during the rain delay. It was comforting to see them persist and win in the end. Baring some spectacular moves in the coming days (Yeah Right!) this season is as done as a Christmas turkey. Abandon all hope ye steadfast Cardinal fans. Just sit back and take what joy you can in the remaining 65 games for a post season there will not be.
I’m with you GS on Gorman and Walker, despite their occasional flashes. And I would also be willing to let Winn go for the right price, despite all his admirers in Cardinaldom (it must be the earrings!). I admire his defense but don’t see him as a major offensive contributor in the long term. Noot also troubles me, much as I like him, but I’d rather hang on to that smile for a while longer barring an offer we can’t refuse.
I guess they are going to keep running that Gorman fella out there every day until he is either struck by lightening or collapses from heat stroke. I thought this “reset” period was to find some better players for next year, but it seems Gorman has a godfather somewhere up there no matter how long he dances around the Mendoza line. Or perhaps management is using his whiffs as a fan to agitate the air for the rest of the team.
I don’t know what to think about Pozo. He seemed to have just appeared out of nowhere. I like what I see, He’s fun to watch. But is he for real in the long term? In the next year or so we’re going to have a glut of catchers. To the block with several nice prospects I guess. A shame.
So, if I am to understand what some of you think, there is no point in being pro-active. The plan, if one can call it that, is do nothing, sit back and watch and let whatever happens happen.
It’s difficult to see what the Cardinals are trying to accomplish. Is there a plan in all this? We don’t appear to be acquiring anything new. We aren’t getting rid of the unsuccessful old. We keep flailing with the same old mediocre manager. The General manager has no future here and no articulated roadmap for earning his final paychecks. Everyone seems to be hoping that the brilliant Bloom who remains carefully out of sight will one day burst upon the scene and transform this bunch into a thing of joy. Meanwhile we are left to sit back and seek satisfaction in the occasional flashes of good baseball while clutching our unrealistic dreams.
I had a queasy feeling throughout this game until Pozo’s potato brought soothing relief. Gotta love that guy!
Texas Card: Don’t forget to add Gorman and Walker to your list of guys who “continue to show who they are which isn’t very good.”
You can only wait so long for big and tall to become good baseball players.
