It is true that Arenado’s output is not reflective of his salary but that has been true for sometime now. Regardless it is also true that we don’t have anyone else on this roster who would be any better at 3B.
They certainly won’t DFA him and I have no idea if he will waive the NTC before July 31 but even if he does we wouldn’t get much back. Maybe some salary relief but we still don’t have anyone else who can play there. Gorman is not the long term answer.
Based on what, exactly? Who’s the 3B that is forcing the Cards to move on from Nolan? I don’t see the Cards eating all that cash just to move on, especially when he’s not exactly terrible at this point anyway.

Flores is just a place holder until Bloom finds someone he wants and likes. He may not make it past the new year or maybe sooner.
Idk that is the big question. I don’t hear much on facilities upgrades or pitching and hitting labs recently. I believe he’s going to put his Tampa Bay rays stamp on the organization philosophy of minor league development.
I don’t know Bloom or Tampa or Boston’s track record abroad. I think we all know that far east major players like the coasts and big cities. So that means if they do hit the international market it will be most latin america and the Caribbean. We shall see!
Eventually the reality is if indeed this team wants to compete and develops enough or some talent within then it will have to play in the FA market. Now the good thing is that Bloom will have more to play with than in Tampa but not as much as in bean town. So I think we’re a couple years away from dabbling out there for some mid tier free agents acquisition.
For me there’s just a lot of frustration. Yes Arenado is the best we have right now, and that really sucks. If Gorman was a clear answer, he would be playing everyday somewhere and not on the IL. But that’s just third base and only one of the problems that stands in our way back to relevancy. I’ve watched this game for a long time, and when my frustration reaches its current levels, it’s time to watch the game in it’s purist form. Little league. No names on the jerseys no concessions no parking issues. The rules are even better.

I only have Liberatore as untouchable for 2026. The other 25 simply don’t matter, until we have a rotation. Whoever it takes in trade, build a rotation.
A rotation won’t matter if you don’t have anything else, and a rotation has a shelf life, so it won’t hang around waiting for a team to form up around it.
The organization has been on the flip flop of buying (or drafting) pitching, then buying (or drafting) hitting, then back around again for at least 10 years. I’d like to see the org become whole in player development, drafting, scouting, trades, etc. rather than chasing their tail.
I’d like to see them remain competitive, but if it takes a year or two of misery to kick off another 2000-2015 run, I can live with it. There is a marked lack of star power up and down the system right now and until we can find star (likely, multiple stars) talent, all the rotational tinkering or lineup machinations won’t matter.
I prefer tied 0-0 after 6 innings, instead of “no chance” after 3 IP.
“Late and close” is much more enjoyable than blown out early.
Bill is not going to buy a rotation and a middle of the order so there is nothing to be gained by spending any substantial money on the ML roster, whether by taking on contract at the deadline or signing FAs this winter. It is a multi year wait on the pipeline, with no quick fix.

My guess is the year was put to good use. The system crashed and burned and fixing it is not just about getting fancier tech. Bloom has been doing something all year, but obviously we don’t know what exactly or whether it will work. Bill waited until the tank was bone dry, so it will take time.
Will Flores continue the draft position.

No. MLB punishes teams that try to be successful and rewards teams that cry poor. DeWitt has stated they can’t operate under the old model. The more he reduces club payroll, the more MLB welfare dollars he will receive. It is, after all, about profit-maximization, not winning.

It’s difficult to identify where any “fixing” has been done. Same old faces shifting same old deck chairs around on the Titanic.
One thing I have learned over the years is that solid and logical analysis is hard to find in a game thread because those thoughts are usually posted in the heat of the moment and are more of the raw and emotional hot takes. We all do it, myself included. The hot takes are kind of what makes game threads entertaining but they usually don’t stand up well over time. This thread seems a bit more rational.
I wasn’t able to open the article that Brian posted in the Brewers thread but I will say that perhaps the Brewers are a model we should try to emulate. No they don’t have a history of postseason success but my goodness they way they just keep winnning year after year after year on a very small budget is amazing. Get rid of Counsell? Get rid of Stearns? Get rid of Hader? Get rid of Burnes? Get rid of Williams? Get rid of Adames? No problem they just keep winning. I don’t know if it is because of the Miller Lite or Front Row Amy but they have found the secret recipe. They sit one game behind the Cubs with the second best record in the NL.
As for our Birds it is difficult to keep harping on the same things each day but it is theraputic for those of us who follow the team fervently. A few thoughts I have:
I don’t think this has been a wasted year. Despite the recent slide we are still over .500 which is better than I thought we would be. I think Bloom has been taking copious notes and now has a really good idea what he is dealing with and what he needs to do. I think he has more to work with than we realize sometimes. We have a decent young core but there needs to be more filtering. We tend to have several decent players that all play the same position or all bat LH’d. The roster needs to be thinned out and balanced more.
Either Nolan Arenado or Nolan Gorman need to go. Having both on the roster doesn’t make sense. Now if it were up to me I would probably trade Gorman. Why? Well he doesn’t have a NTC so we wouldn’t have to burn months and months for no result. Plus I think Arenado still brings value to the club. He is stellar defensively and can still get the occasional big hit. He just isn’t the old All Star Nolan anymore but he only has two more years left after this one.
Jordan Walker should be sent to Memphis and just left there until he can produce a minimum of two consececutive months of .800 OPS. We rushed him to the big leagues, set unreasonable expectations, and tried to force the issue because of his pedigree status. We should let him stay in Memphis for awhile and not bring him back up the first time he has a two hit game. I know we are supposed to be giving out runway but production should still matter too.
As for the pitching we should probably just do a clearout of Helsley, Maton, Matz, and Fedde the next 10 days, bring McGreevy up and just play out the final two months. Our rotation couldn’t be worse than it is.
Finally, I would say to Bloom to think long and hard about giving NTC’s in the future. They have completely stymied this reset or rebuild. Arenado, Gray, and Contreras aren’t going anywhere unless they change their mind or their contract runs out, whichever comes first. At least with Mikolas we only have two more months remaining.
One other thing I forgot to mention is that we need to figure out our catching situation before next year. I think Pages is a fine backup catcher but he is not a starting catcher. His game calling and defense may be a plus but his lack of a bat is not acceptable. We already have too many holes in our lineup to have another automatic out.
Pozo has hit well in limited appearances. We either need to give him more runway, bring up one of the many prized catchers in the system, or look outside the organization for a better than average stopgap to bridge the gap to the prospects.
With respect, why can’t Wetherholt play third? Admittedly, I haven’t seen him play much, but I’ve noticed he mostly plays SS and is considered a good athlete and fielder. Not a lot of power, but then again, how much power did Boggs or Brett have? Or Ken Oberkfell?
Personally, I think Winn & Wetherholt could be a dynamite team up the middle, but if he is needed at third, I think he could do it.
Mo is already playing the guys (catchers) he wAnts to see play. When its Blooms’ turn, maybe there will be change.
If Crooks is indeed the next in line you figure out a way to keep one of Pozo or Pages in the minors or trade them. Again I’m not up to speed with Crooks behind the dish. It’s looked as if he struggled a bit with AAA pitching but he’s already drove in more runs than he did all last season.
The problem with Weatherholt at 3rd is there is no path for PT currently with NA entrenched at the position.
Correct 858. Weatherholt could conceivably be ready to play in STL in 2026 but where is he going to play? He isn’t playing over Arenado and his contract. Would he play over Gorman? Maybe but that creates another logjam. Would he play over Donnie at 2B? No but maybe Donnie moves to LF but then what happens with Noot? We have a lot of logjams that need clearing out.
