1:20 p.m.
LHP Matthew Liberatore (6-6, 3.70) vs. RHP Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44)
Fan Duel // KMOXJuly 4, 2025 at 4:28 pm #286406Maybe Liberatore can stop the bleeding….it’s getting gruesome.
July 4, 2025 at 6:22 pm #286412I just read where Mikolas has been invited to pitch in the Home Run Derby.
July 4, 2025 at 6:54 pm #286413He may never regain consciousness. And if he does, he may have to work from a gurney.
July 4, 2025 at 11:13 pm #286422Invited? Heck, he’s probably been offered a huge sum of $$$ to work his gopher ball magic.
July 5, 2025 at 8:39 am #286437Well, today can only be better. Doesn’t mean the Cards will win but I’d bet the house they don’t give up 8 hrs….
July 5, 2025 at 9:20 am #286439Home run derby a couple of weeks early. Too bad the Cardinals did not participate. These mid-summer day games are tough for me to catch, as I have mentioned. Usually too much going on to give 2 1/2 hours sitting around watching the game. I will try to catch the KMOX guys though. Libby usually gives us a chance.
July 5, 2025 at 10:18 am #286444Unfortunately I’ll never forget yesterday’s debacle. These games that remain permanently etched in our memories are such a rarity. For one to qualify as such, you had to have been watching it live. For example, The Whitten Game was historic, but sits far back in my memories, as I only saw clips of his 12 RBI game vs watching his wonderful feat in it’s entirety. There also was the Gibson Game, when Gibby K’d 17 Tigers in the ’68 WS, but that was a bit before my time. The ones that sit center stage for me were the Willie McGee Game where Willie whacked 2 bombs off Pete Vukovich and robbed Gorman of a homer in Game 3 of ’82 WS, The Sandberg Game, which I care not to go into great detail, The Niedenfuer Games where Ozzie and Jack hit game winning homers in successive games to win the NLCS, The Albert Game when Albert went 5-5 with 3 homers vs the cubbies and now this Miles Mikolas Game. There was another Cardinals game that I’ll never forget, but am having difficulty finding a name for it. I believe it was a Sunday afternoon game at Wrigley around the turn of the century where the winds were swirling and howling like no game I had ever witnessed. Every pop-up or fly ball was a total adventure……such a fun ballgame to see. Well today is a new day and a new game……could we be calling it The Libby Game by day’s end?

jj-cf-stlParticipantWhen Mikolas and Fedde pitch two games of a three game series, the third starter is counted on to prevent a sweep, because the $$$ boys ain’t getting it done.
July 5, 2025 at 12:08 pm #286446Pugs mentioned that yesterday’s game will probably remain etched into his memory. Fortunately I wasn’t able to watch the Applecast, so there’s a decent chance that the fiasco will eventually fade from my mind’s eye. In any case, yesterday’s Indepedence Day humiliation at Wrigley Field has to be right up there with some of the all time catastrophic failures of my favorite team in a regular season game and you really didn’t have to see it. A quick glance at the box tells you that it was the sort of relentless pounding that could be termed first rate.

ParticipantIts very apparent that this team won’t be going anywhere with Mikolas and Fedde in the rotation. Our batters can’t score enough runs to win almost any of their starts. Install the runway and let’s see what we have at Memphis. Springfield has a couple of starters that can their places in Memphis.
I called the F.O. but no answer. Maybe they see see that its me calling or that there’s no one there.
July 5, 2025 at 12:15 pm #286448You’re a lucky man in missing yesterday’s fireworks, TD. If I were the sports editor over at the Chicago Tribune, I just may have headlined today’s sports page “BOMBS AWAY!!”
July 5, 2025 at 12:28 pm #286449Me and Whitey Herdog will be on the couch for this one. We will start off with our din-din which today will consist of a Hungry Man’s Salisbury Steak TV dinner, some deviled eggs, an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew, and a chocolate shake. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar while we watch the carnage
I figure I can turn this game off by the 3rd or 4th inning. Then I can catch the Reds/Phillies game from Connie Mack Stadium starting at 4:10 est.

As I mentioned yesterday when we conclude this series we will have played the Cubs 7 times in two weeks. None of our starts were by Sonny Gray. That is just wrong.

July 5, 2025 at 1:06 pm #286454The emergence of Liberatore has been my favorite part of this season. IIRC it was Bloom who lobbied hard for him to be a starter. That said it’s time to lean harder into the reset, rebuild, whatever it is. Aggressively shop Fedde and Helsley, as they should have done this past offseason. A reliever like Matz who can face 4-6 batters would appeal to almost any contender. Listen to offers on any big league position player outside of Winn and Herrera. If they believe Donovan is a keeper make an offer to buy out his last two arb years and keep him through his age 32 or 33 season. If not, see what he might return.
July 5, 2025 at 1:09 pm #286455As I’ve said, we don’t have anybody that can hit.
The fact that Saggesse is hitting 5th for us pretty much tells the tale.
And from what I see we do not have any hitters in our future.
Our only hope is to sign a big free agent bat this coming winter.
And do you think BDW is going to shell out the $$$?
We might be looking at the 1970s all over again.
July 5, 2025 at 1:11 pm #286456Look at our bottom 5 in the order. Each and every one of those players need to start proving that they belong. Never a good thing when the majority of your starting lineup has so much to prove. But the talent is there. Hopefully today they start kicking it into gear.
July 5, 2025 at 1:20 pm #286457I’m optimistic with Bloom taking over. I also think there could be 2-3 lean years as he ramps up the player development system. After that I hope we become a Tampa/Milwaukee, plus a little more payroll for a couple key FAs. Since they can’t spend with the large market teams they need to be ruthless in their payroll efficiency. I think with the shifting media environment, dwindling attendance, and upcoming CBA we shouldn’t expect a big FA signing soon.
July 5, 2025 at 1:24 pm #286458The cameras panned over into the visitor’s dugout several times prior to first pitch and it was obvious that the Redbird manager was all smiles. I mean, he looked as happy as a first time bride on her wedding day. That’s nice to see.
July 5, 2025 at 1:25 pm #286459I don’t know much at all about Mr. Bloom. What’s his track record look like, Mort?
July 5, 2025 at 1:31 pm #286460Bloom was instrumental in developing Tampa’s player development system, particularly pitching. It’s the kind of org that can lose a Wander Franco then be back in contention 1.5 seasons later. He got a lot of blame for the Betts trade in Boston. However the ownership was kind of squirrelly so he doesn’t deserve all the blame. I’m looking forward to him returning us to a top-notch player development org. I’d love to see us return to cranking out starters like Garcia, Lynn, Wacha, Martinez, even Miller, with regularity.
July 5, 2025 at 1:36 pm #286461Saggy with a 2 run double to set the day’s tone.
July 5, 2025 at 1:37 pm #286462Saggese produces the key 2 RBI base hit. We could use a little more of that.
July 5, 2025 at 1:38 pm #286463This was the most winnable game of the series on paper. I’d love to see 6/2 out of Liberatore.
