I agree. As much as I like Carpenter and appreciate what he has done in the past, I fear this may be the beginning of the end. Please, oh please prove me wrong Matt!

They are not paying Tommy Pham for his intellectual prowess, they are paying him (not so much as it turns out) for playing baseball. As long as he continues to play good baseball, the hell with the rest of his nonsense.

When the Cards traded Enos Slaughter my Dad Swore he would never drink another bottle of Budweiser beer as long as he lived. And to the best of my knowledge he never did. Dad always thought retiring Slaughter’s number was a bit of a two-faced move. We both appreciated Wally Moon, but he weren’t no Slaughter.
I agree that clubs have got carried away with the number retiring business these days.I understand the thinking, I just feel it’s a shame not to have JG in the lineup. He’s a quality infielder with a usually reliable bat. I’m afraid he’ll go stale on the bench. On the other hand I’m delighted to see JMartinez in there with his big stick.
So, In the “one-too-many” infielders sweepstakes Gyorko is the odd-man out. For how long? Is this an offensive move? A defensive move? Or a flip-a-coin move?
If Longoria and Gyorko could be expected to provide more or less the same production, why not just forget Longoria and save five million or so and gain a few years in the age department?
I don’t understand why so many of you are so hot for Longoria. He’s yesterday’s ballplayer, far more expensive than he’s worth, and not really an upgrade of any consequence.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if at least some of these great ws games were played in daylight? I know, I know, the principal raison d’etre for mlb is to rake in the maximum money from the maximum number of sources, but still… Ever since I played my first game in Little League there has been a indelible connection between baseball and sunshine and outdoors. It’s such a tradition-bound sport you would think the Saturday afternoon ball game would endure. Alas, some dreams must die.
I don’t find the discussion in these last few posts particularly useful, and even less interesting to read. Opinions are just that, opinions. You can agree with them or not. If not, you can say why, or remain silent and move on.
I enjoy this site and love to read what most of you think about the various aspects of my favorite baseball team, especially because so many of you are up to your adam’s apples in statistics, which I am far too lazy to seek out myself.
Please don’t ruin it.I’ll buy that. Or at the very least, how about requiring teams to actually win something to get into the playoffs?
Excuse me for being slightly off topic. But I was struck by your comment that: “Wong will make just $4 million next year…”
I know, I know, the world is speeding past us old farts, but I still can’t get used to the idea that four million dollars a year is considered a pittance.
It reminds me of that comment by Ill. Sen. Everett Dirksen many years ago: “A billion here, a billion there. Before you know it you’re talking about real money!”
And yes, I think Wong is worth keeping around at 2b until something better comes along – which doesn’t appear to be imminent.
