It’s a pity, but I no longer have access to the PD and Goold’s work. I’m not sure why. I regularly read the New York Times on line, but one day the gods of the internet started blocking the PD. Something to do with the European Union and data protection. Why that should affect the PD and not the NYT escapes me. In any case I never got to see the Goold chat with Dexter.

It is, only in the sense that he cites this as the reason he cannot do the job for which he is being paid many millions of dollars. We, the fans, did not raise the issue of mental health. He did. While I agree we fans have no right to his “mental health records,” I believe that we, as the ultimate source of the millions he is being paid, have a right to a clear statement of whether or not he is seeking professional help for this problem that has rendered him incapable of earning his pay.
BW: Believe me I am not promoting Carpenter for 2B (to answer your question I think he was more than adequate there defensively). I was merely trying to point out it would not be the disaster some seem to fear if circumstances, trades, etc., put him at second. I’m quite happy with Wong at second with his excellent glove and, until proven otherwise, merely adequate bat.
I’ve got no problem keeping Martinez around as a bench player, unless he fits into a trade package that fills a real need. As one of you said earlier, .300 hitters with power and making peanuts don’t grow on trees.
Why not enjoy 2019 first and give them a chance to address later on later on?
BW: That’s exactly the kind of thinking we have to avoid, and that’s why I said yesterday after the news conference that these guys seemed entirely too self-satisfied with the Goldy move. You can’t run a gazillion-dollar business that way. You have to keep thinking/planning/moving ahead. I’m no great Harper lover, but why not give it a serious try? Goldy didn’t solve the RF situation and those counting on O’Neill or a resurgent Fowler may be setting themselves up for disappointment. You can never have too much talent.
The Cardinals brass sounded pretty self-satisfied at that news conference today, going so far as to say they thought they now had the starting eight players in the house for next year. I hope that doesn’t mean they are going to ease up on the gas and lay back until spring training. There are still places where improvements could be made besides the bullpen. Why stop at one good acquisition? There are still some good bats out there. It’s too early for “Our work is done here.”
I’ll go for the center field umpire. We could put Angel Hernandez out there. It’s as far away from home plate as it’s possible to get.
If you define success as making good money, 2018 was a success.

I, for my part, will be sitting in front of mlbtv with my bowl of disappointment, my cup of bitter beverage and my plate of sour grapes, alas, hoping against hope a miracle happens.
I keep looking for reasons to be optimistic about tonight’s game and the rest of the season, but I just can’t find any. The negatives just carry too much weight.

Sounds like you’ve got a great gal. I’ve spent half a lifetime trying to explain baseball to my wife, starting with games at the AA San Antonio Missions, but to no avail.
Hey, he’s the best hitter on the team. Has been all year. If he wants to be a goofball, let him. As long as those RBIs keep coming. It doesn’t bother me. And apparently it doesn’t bother his teammates.
As I said before: What’s the rush?
I like Shildt. He very well may be the manager we need in the long term. Now that he’s been locked in he’d better be.
But why was it so urgent? Where was the pressure to sign coming from? What was the downside of examining the results of the rest of the year before making our move.
Anyhow, I like what I’ve seen so far and I’m hoping for the best.
Adams is an acceptable left-hander off the bench. Nice guy qualities aside, he’s not worth juggling the present lineup to squeeze him in. And before you start talking about putting him in left to replace injured Ozuna, just think about the brief experiment with him there before his departure.
I like what I’ve seen of Shildt so far and I think he probably would be a good manager for a longer term. At the same time I see no need to rush into anything. It’s not like there is a big competition for his services. Let’s see how things play out for the rest of the season and keep our options open. Let’s see if this new aggressive style of play continues and can be more directly attributed to him. I, for one, am particularly pleased with his more or less steady lineup and better bullpen usage.

I am. On the other hand, every game played without him subtracts so many positive elements it’s a hard decision to make, especially if the man himself says he’s good to go.
I don’t care how many he hits. I’m just enjoying his resurgence after such a wretched start, not to mention enduring some rather unpleasant commentary from the peanut gallery. Bravo Carp. Keep swinging buddy.
