I certainly hope they play Edman regularly the rest of the year. These last few days give reason to hope.
I’m afraid I ruined all that healthy eating by finishing with a dish of B&J chocolate and brownie ice cream.
Well, let’s see, I had a slice of onion, a piece of red pepper, a piece of green pepper, a slice of chaurcy cheese and a thin slice of smoked salmon, salt, pepper and herbes de provence baked in a flakey pastry along with a crisp salad and a couple of glasses of Haut Medoc.
I guess with that I can claim credit for Edman’s two RBI hit in the seventh.OK. I think one unflattering epithet per decade (perhaps even every five years) can be overlooked, especially if the culprit has been a particularly amusing and insightful poster in the preceding years.
Odd you should mention the Indianapolis. The latest book on the subject is just out in paperback and mine arrived in the mail from Amazon today.

I’d quibble with a couple of the names you mention but in general I think you’ve got it right. I can take more pleasure in watching some exciting kids play hard and lose than suffer the current slow death.
As I recall last year, which y’all might remember was a disappointing season, this forum spent a lot of time beating up on Mabry for not doing his job with underperforming hitters. This year we certainly have an excessive number of underperforming hitters but I haven’t seen any criticism of the batting coach. In fact there has been so little mention of him I had to go look up his name. Why was Mabry such a target of attention and ol’ Whatshisname has not been?
BW: Seems I read that joke somewhere long ago as a Ty Cobb line. On the other hand perhaps they’re both apocryphal.
With the seven-hour time difference I can only watch day games in real time. My routine is to get up in the morning, check the website to see if we won (or otherwise played an exciting game). If so I watch the game from MLB-TV sometime during the day. If we lost, I spend the day in a crappy mood. The result is I don’t watch so many games and I see less of the bad baseball.
The first half of the season has led to a lot of crappy moods.
As I said in another thread, I’d like to have an ear in the clubhouse to hear what the players themselves are saying about their less than stirring play, the non-existent offense. Do they have post-game discussions? Serious analyses of the day’s performances, both as a team and as individuals? Is there any leadership among the players? Or do they simply make too much money to care about performance?
At the halfway point I think it’s fair to say this has been a disappointing Cardinals season. I’m afraid I’ve frequently been among those who have whined a bit about a number of things. I’m a lifelong fan and essentially a positive thinking person. When I’m at my gloomiest, I look at the standings and am somewhat cheered to see we are only 2.5/3.0 games out of first place. So things can’t be that bad right?(That is certainly Schildt’s outlook). Unfortunately that is thanks largely to our competition rather than the quality of our baseball. Shildt is doing only what management employees are paid to do, scour the stats for positive elements while minimizing our inadequacies.
What I would love to have is an ear in the locker room. What are these guys saying about themselves among themselves? Is there any serious post-game discussion? Any analysis by the players of their unimpressive performance, as individuals or as a group? Are they even embarrassed by the sorry offensive numbers they put up over half a season? Or are they simply making too much money to care?I always like to see Martinez’ bat in the lineup. I don’t have any stats to back it up but I don’t think his defense is any worse than Fowler’s.
It’s a mere 86 degrees in my neck of the woods today Rat, but the national weather svc says the Sahara will be treating us to 100 degrees (38C) Wednesday and Thursday. I’ve got lotsa shade, but no swimming pool.
Honest question: Does anybody actually pay serious attention to those cheerleaders in the booth? It’s so rare that they stop babbling about non-game nonsense to bring real insight to the play in front of them.
I’ve grown a little weary of the Reyes saga. When he turns up on the Cardinals roster and pitches more than a handful of innings I’ll think a bit more about him. But until then I’ll skip reading all those “if only we had Reyes in the rotation” posts.
On Carpenter, I’ve always liked him and am distressed to watch him fail so miserably this year. I also like Gyorko, but I don’t think he’s the answer either. Don’t think anybody else would take either, so trade seems out. It shouldn’t be hard to find somebody who can play a notch or two over mediocre at third and hit a few dozen points over 220.

Hope St. Louis weather allows us to finish off the Angels in style before heading off for a day of rest.
MM3: I appreciate all that AP did for us over the years but in the end he’s just a greedy player who dumped us for a few more bucks, which of course he had a perfect right to do. I am unmoved by his return, one way or another, announcer’s promotions notwithstanding.
I really dislike that expression to “figure it out” as concerns baseball players. Managers and coaches waiting until these guys “get it figured out.” What’s to figure out. There are no big secrets here. No puzzles. Most of these guys have been playing the game since they were eight years old. They are now professionals at the top level of their profession. Nine guys really shouldn’t need to “figure out” how to win a baseball game. I’ll tell you what most of these guys HAVE got figured out: If they win a game or lose a game, if they finish the season below 500 or 30 games over, they are still going to collect their millions.
Merci for the encouragement Monsieur Pugsley. I’ve been hanging in there through thick and thin with these guys since the days when St. Louis was the “southern team” and Texas boys had no one else to cheer for. And believe me that included more than a few not-so-hot years. I still say on the face of it this roster has what it takes, it just isn’t taking. Somebody needs to step up and show some leadership. I was hoping that might be Goldschmidt, but so far he has not proved to be the Goldschmidt we traded for.
