Cardinals record after 100 games for the last 5 seasons 50-50, 53-47, 44-56, 52-48, 51-49

That means the records in the last 62 games each year…40-22, 40-22, 28-35, 31-31. Started out consistent, then not so much.
1. Bring Crooks up and trade Pages. Crooks and Pozo are next year’s catchers.
2. Mikolas and Fedde are gone. Build the rotation around Gray, Liberatore and McGreevy. Sign a #3 SP for 2-3 years and trade for a quality SP. Either move Pallante to the pen or trade him.
3. Build the pen around Svanson, Graceffo, and Granillo. I wouldn’t mind Matz, Romero or Maton on very short commitments.
4. The only untouchables are Wetherholt, Bernal, Padilla (for now) and the 2025 draftees.
5. It would take a major haul to trade Mathews, Roby, Winn or Herrera. Church is making me wonder if he should be in this category.I like the sound of an infield of Crooks, Contreras, Donovan, Winn and Wetherholt. I am not sure that Arenado will be traded, however.
I didn’t think very many other “changes” need to be made to what Bloom has started to implement, development system wise. I do expect they will be more aggressive in the international market. I would like to see Marmol gone, though.

My thoughts:
C: 10,000% keep Pages over Pozo. Trade Pozo while he’s worth something. Teams are catching onto how to beat him at the plate and they are running wild on him. Pages is the far better catcher and can help Crooks adapt. Plus, that’s a nice platoon split.
1B: Contreras. Trade Burleson. Teach Herrera how to play 1B as well. Maybe Gorman too.
2B: Donovan initially, but eventually Wetherholt goes here. It’s JJ’s best and most comfortable position. We want him comfortable on the defensive side to start. Donovan eventually moves back to super sub or replaces Noot or Walker altogether.
SS: Winn. Saggese and Wetherholt can backup in 5% of games.
3B: Ideally Gorman, but Arenado if he’s still around. In that case, Gorman is backup with Saggese or Wetherholt able to play there in a pinch.
LF: Nootbaar. He’s been a bit unlucky this season. Plus, there’s no other great choice.
CF: Scott. He’s mostly earned it. Church would be ready if Scott gets hurt.
RF: I’m sticking with Walker. He’s been coming around lately. Hopefully Baez or Chase Davis can start to push their way into the conversation by mid season as backups. Until then, try to teach Herrera and maybe bring in a free agent with right handed power.
SP: Gray, Liberatore, McGreevey, Pallante and a free agent. Hopefully Matthews, Roby, or Doyle can push out McGreevey, Pallante, or Liberatore by midsummer. Until those big 3 are ready, Rajcic can serve as the #6 or #7 fill-in guy for double headers or short injuries.
RP: I’m fine with the back end being some combination of O’Brien, Granillo, Svanson, and Romero with a free agent veteran signing in that mix too. Plus Leahy in middle relief. Might as well move Hence here too before his arm falls off. Bedell can try his luck at swingman with a short leash. Maybe Robberse next.
The idea of trading players at their highest value certainly sounds like a no-brainer on the surface. I mean why wouldn’t you want to do that? To me it boils down to when do you want to start winning again, or when do you think it is realistic to start winning again? Trading guys like Burly, Herrera, or Pozo might bring back better value than trading Gorman, Walker, or Pozo but the problem is that your team is still stuck with Gorman, Walker, and Pages. Is the enhanced trade haul going to overcome keeping the inferior (at least offensively) players? If so when?
2025 is quickly looking to be a bust. Should we anticipate trying to put together a winning team in 2026? 2027? 2028? I think you have to answer that question before deciding who to trade. I mean if we are really focused on trading high should we also trade Donovan or Winn or Libby? Should we scoot the win-now season back to 2029 or 2030? I am hoping this is the conversation Mo is currently having with Bloom.
Will be interesting to see if one of the veterans with NTCs ends up moving. Gray would be a great addition for a contender, and Contreras as well. I think Matz and Helsley are gone in the next week or so.
Looking further down the road, one of either Pages or Pozo will be elsewhere in 2026. I hope we can find a fifth starter better than Pallante, but they may not happen. Bullpen might be okay with the likes of these younger guys.
Would also like to move on from Marmol and make a clean break from the current field management as well.
On another note, anyone surprised that the Brewers have overtaken the Cubs? Yeah, me too.
If I were an MLB GM shopping at the Cardinals store I would be hard pressed to find much I’d want to spend my money on or trade anything of real value for. There might be the odd bit of talent lurking in the bargain basement, but not much.
Would also like to move on from Marmol and make a clean break from the current field management as well.
It will be interesting to see how Bloom handles this. If he were so inclined to make a change he would have to get permission from BDW to eat the final year of Ollie’s contract. Good luck with that.

I agree CIF. I have a feeling this pending selloff is going to be rather anti-climatic and the return is going to illicit a giant shoulder shrug.

The Milwaukee Brewers now have the best record in all of MLB, while sporting a 40 man payroll of $110.9M, which ranks 24th in MLB. That is called payroll efficiency my friends and is probably BDW’s dream scenario for the Cards. Another round of Miller Lite on the house.
Yeah, the Brewers have caught and passed the Cubbies while stringing together 12 straight W’s which includes 6 consecutive W’s over the Dodgers. And they’re realizing this success while using what is essentially a 4 man rotation.

gscottar perfectly said! Trading our valuable hitters Burleson Herrera and Donovan would make me think we aren’t even trying to win this decade! And trading them so we can see more of Walker and Gorman! Good Grief!
We could keep guys like Burleson and Donovan, and trade guys like Gorman and Walker but what are you going to get for them? How are you going to replace them on the roster?
If either Gorman or Walker live up to their ceiling after being traded, it will be another Adolis Garcia, Arozarena, Gallen or Alcantara situation. You have to give up something of value to get the pitching we NEED to be competitive. We have a better shot of getting competitive again by trading Burleson or Donovan than trading Walker or Gorman at their lowest value.
We won’t get a top prospect for Walker or Gorman, either. We might get closer to that by trading Burleson, though.
Forsch, we never gave Garcia or Arozarena or Gallen or Alcantra 1200 at bats or 20 starts to see what they could do! Someone in the FO just decided tbey were not good enough and tried to get something for them! We have given Gorman and Walker plenty of opportunity and they have proved one thing above all else! Tbey can’t hit! The way I see the trade deadline is most teams that deal there good players do so because they know they are not gonna be able to sign them in a year or two! That is not the case with Burleson, Herrera and Donovan!
I was hoping our young kids would be our rotation of the future?

How long before any of those guys will be ready for the majors? Mathews, Hence, Hjerpe and Roby have all been injured. Doyle hasn’t even thrown 1 inning in professional baseball.
Arozarena was basically 25 when he was traded and Garcia was basically 27 when he was given away. Walker turned 23 in May and Gorman turned 25 in May. They were brought up too early and should have spent more time in the minors. I’m willing to give them another year. The only problem with Gorman is he really doesn’t have a clear path to full time playing time.
