I see a John King, Granillo and Matz game tomorrow. Hope Granillo knocks em dead before he gets back on the Memphis shuttle.

The odds are definitely not on our side in this one. I find myself conflicted going into this last week before next Thursday’s 5pm(cst) trading deadline. I couldn’t ever in a million years imagine rooting for our Cardinals to lose. But my fear is that we’ll take 3-4…..or God forbid sweep these Padres and then have our powers that be falsely thinking our club is a legitimate playoff team. After all, they do have a profound track record of being easily fooled. Make no bones about it, our Cardinals are stone cold Sellers with a capital “S”. To act in any other manner than that as a Seller would be terribly ignorant. So though I could never realistically root for our boys to lose, I will not shed any tears whatsoever if they don’t play their best ball this weekend vs San Diego.

Oh boy – Mikolas again. Probably a loss, although they still have to play the game.

Could this be Miles’ last start as a Cardinal? Probably not, but there is a glimmer of hope that he passes an audition and some contender brings him on as depth for a late season push to get to the promised land.

Mikolas has a NTC. Probably won’t be traded.

If he gives us another clunker tonight he should be DFA’d like Fedde. That Cardinals are going to have to pay him the rest of the year either way.

That might help Mikolas tonight is the fact that today is a CCFF!

Yep, din-din today will be out at Lakeview, the Amish restaurant on the lake north of town. Catfish Fiddlers, mashed potatoes/gravy, noodles, green beans, dressing, baked fish, sweet iced tea, a piece of cherry pie and some soft frozen vanilla ice cream. Then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar out on the bench in the front porch area. Going to be hot so I will have my Cherry Kool-Aid with me.

Miles has had 3 Friday starts in 2025. 2 not so good, one solid ( an eternity ago and the july 4th debacle. So I don’t think it matters that it’s some CTFFF Friday mumbo jumbo.

Hopefully Miles has a nice light meal like a salad or baked chicken breast. It would also help if Oli has the bullpen nice and warm around the 4th or 5th just in case Miles has us in the ballgame. (Snickers)

Din-din here will be leftovers, as we are hitting Firehouse subs for lunch and the Italian sandwich myself and Lady Bike love. A couple of potential leftover options are homemade chicken pot pie, or sloppy joes.

And speaking of cherry pie (we were speaking of that, right), our tart cherry tree we planted in 2022 had its first decent harvest this year. We made a cherry pie a couple of weeks ago and it was fabulous.

Once we get a regular big harvest going I also want to make tart cherry juice, as I hear it is one of the healthiest things you can have. I buy it at the store now and then, but it’s expensive.

I have a wally world chicken pot pie for dinner. Mrs. Back and myself have distinctly different culinary tastes. But if it has chicken in it she will partake.

I’m scheduled for steak fajitas, avacado dip and chips, refried beans straight from a Mesquite girls kitchen. Of course with homemade cast iron tortillas. I’ll suffer thru somehow.

Friday night is always pizza night at our house. I have a large organic cheese ready to go with a few pepperonis on my half and a few black olives on the wife’s half. Mine will be washed down by a tall glass of diet mountain dew. Hopefully Mikolas hasn’t given up a 5 spot before the first slice has been consumed.

Sadly, our old favorite, King Edwards Catfish and Fried Chicken closed about 6 months ago. Mrs. 1TD and your’s truly had been enjoying fried catfish dinners at “King Eddie’s” for well over 30 years, particularly on Fridays and weekends. They were really good. A couple of weeks ago we tried the new joint that moved in to replace them and I’m sad to say that I won’t be lending my stamp of approval. Over priced, underfed and the character and atmosphere of the old joint has been replaced by a gentrified and yuppie type environment. It doesn’t even smell like hot grease anymore…Haha! At any rate, Joni Mitchell sang it best…

I miss King Edwards too, TD. Going back to when they were in the little space where Yolk Lore is now, I always favored their batter dipped chicken over the usual flour dredged type, which is what the new place has. I was a fan of the catfish fillets too. I haven’t tried the fish at the new place yet. The chicken was fine but nothing special, and I agree overpriced. I got the impression their main location caters to different type of customer than they will be seeing there on Watson, and they haven’t factored that in yet.

As to trading or DFAing Mikolas, who would step into the rotation? (And don’t say some weird piggyback combo thing involving Matz, for the love of god, we’ve been abused enough).

Yeah, Bling, I remember when they were up the hill about mile west of the current building which, at one time, was an IHOP. That building that now houses the Yolk Lore that you mentioned was a lot smaller and seemed to cater more to carry out. King Eddie’s also has a St. Charles location, but we’ve never been there and I was led to understand it’s under a different ownership than the old place on Watson. In any case, we didn’t care for the new place and it was unbelievably expensive for the sort of fare they serve. Everything was ala carte, so by the time we added the usual catfish sides of fries, hush puppies, cole slaw and a couple of iced teas, the tab was more than a bit lofty. The fillets were also a lot smaller than King Eddie’s. Oh well, I may have to just buy some cornmeal and wet a line…Haha!

Din-din tonight was in fact breakfast. We got back from a brief trip too late to prepare a proper evening repast so I whipped up a quick meal of bacon and waffles slathered in butter and doused with imported Canadian maple syrup, which also obviated the need for dessert. No catfish, hélas.

    on Watson, and

One of my favorite places is on Watson-Rich and Charlies. Great Italian food salad bread at an affordable price. I dont care how good the food is, if it’s overpriced I don’t enjoy it.

Rich and Charlie’s is first rate, KCB. I stopped in there just the other day by myself when I was driving by on Watson Rd. while running some errands when it was about 100 degrees outside and had a late lunch consisting of their Cesar salad and a small order of garlic cheese beard. It was the perfect light lunch for a day in pergatory…Haha! Can’t beat them for both quality and affordability.

Bling, the replacement would probably be Matz, Leahy or Curtis Taylor. I think a bucket of balls might throw as well as Mikolas has this year. Or Aaron Wilkerson might be given a look.
