Bloom has no allegiance to either player.

However I question this as a pivot to Bloom due to his days in the Rays organization. He had quite a good reputation in developing pitching and development plans for players in the system. With an eye on limiting payroll. Some won’t like that approach on the payroll side.

I’m with you GS on Gorman and Walker, despite their occasional flashes. And I would also be willing to let Winn go for the right price, despite all his admirers in Cardinaldom (it must be the earrings!). I admire his defense but don’t see him as a major offensive contributor in the long term. Noot also troubles me, much as I like him, but I’d rather hang on to that smile for a while longer barring an offer we can’t refuse.

Bloom has a huge task in front of him. Nobody that’s paying attention thinks we will buy the needed talent to be a serious contender. Judge the condition of this roster by the # of guys selected to the all star team.

    “Rest of the season”

    66 games counting today.
52 games after the 7-31 trade deadline.

14 games of unknown FO buyer/seller status. “Go for it” doesn’t look good, but the activity of the league should provide opportunities to move players.

And then we have the remaining 52 games where “runways” for young players could re-emerge. That’s a good last look for offseason decisions. Vet players like Hampson could also be released as Crawford was on 8-20-2024, opening up roster spot(s) for debuts.

Some of the players we are suggesting could be traded, could also break out in 66 games. Who besides Mo, had Libby in this years rotation? However the season goes, the last two months have importance to the future roster.

The rest of the season happens in AAA too. I have this vision that maybe Winn and Wetherholt could be the left side of the future. They need to find out if that is a possibility. One would have to go to 3B obviously. They should have Wetherholt there every day in Memphis. I have my doubts about Winn’s arm from 3rd. It takes strength and accuracy and an ability when necessary to one hop it to 1st without short hopping it. Rolen was an absolute master. Anyway, they need to figure it out. Does Wetherholt have a ML caliber left side arm, and which one could play 3rd every day at a high level.

Thay also need to decide if Pozo is the Palacios of catchers and will return to obscurity after a productive year or do they hang on to him. Some peeps are all over Bernal and maybe Crooks, but given the org’s history with catchers, one in hand may be worth more than two in the bush. They need to get a catcher decision right for once.

They need to do something about the outfield, but its hard to see that there is anything in house and close that would help. Continuing to shuffle what they have is pointless, so I don’t know that there is anything useful to be done the rest of the season.

On the pitching side the only thing I could suggest is getting some ML use out of Roby while he can take the mound. If he could put together a few good outings we could get something for him this winter before he breaks down for good. I think I would also get Liby out of the rotation. I don’t feel like breaking new ground IP wise is a great idea.

So far, the Cardinals’ answer seems to be “no”. I draw that conclusion from the fact his diversification has been 100% at second and 0% at third. It would be far preferable to get reps at a new position prior to Triple-A.

ALL signs point towards JJ being at 2nd or what I’ve heard and now seen as far as PT from Brian.

This is w rest year. It feels like a reset team without and MOTO bat to rely on but it’s almost exactly like last season where they hung around. They added by subtracting Edman and Carlson. This year I think they will end up selling Low on Fedde, trading Helsley and Maton and possibly Gorman. If Gorman streaks his way into a better 2 week run we may see him go or if they keep him and he streaks himself into a solid 2nd half could be kept or dealt in the off-season. Regardless Bloom has a little work to do as far as everyday lineup reconstruction goes.

Bloom does have a few things he’s walking into.

Sigh, the roster is going to be very resistant to being straightened out with in house assets. There is a pile up of right side infielders. I think maybe the weaker orgs end up that way. I am hoping Randy does not take the easy way and draft another one, but a high floor middle infielder is a good bet to be a first round pick who looks good quickly. Randy may have that in mind.

“utility” role aligns with Saggese at 3B recently. Gorman may be gone during the next two weeks.

I am not trying to be captain obvious but it appears the door on “buy mode” is about to be slammed shut. I know that some felt that door had been closed for a long time but they didn’t hear that from the Cardinals. That was just a personal opinion or personal wish. Regardless the actual evidence is pointing to some kind of upcoming sell. The team would need to go something like 8-2 the next ten games to change course and that seems doubtful.

As for the remainder of the season and who gets runway and a future tryout that depends on who is traded and who isn’t. I won’t go through the entire list of possiblities but I am assuming all of the veteran NTC guys are staying put.

One thing that caught my attention recently is that one of the posters on this board (I can’t remember who) mentioned that Herrera might receive an audition in RF. Is that a thing that could actually happen or was that just a possible suggestion? I mean I love Herrera’s bat. I think he is our best overall hitter and needs to be in the lineup everyday but can he really play RF? That seems like a strange thing to experiment with during the season unless we have completely given up. I think that should be attempted during the offseason and spring training next year.

According to a report (I didn’t see it myself), the Cardinals had Herrera taking some fly balls in the outfield during his rehab. How serious it was, I don’t know.

Ivan Herrera’s days as the St. Louis Cardinals’ catcher are clearly numbered https://redbirdrants.com/ivan-herrera-s-days-as-the-st-louis-cardinals-catcher-are-clearly-numbered

    There’s this but its speculation

If the Cardinals are just wanting to keep Herrera healthy then DH would accomplish that. To me moving him to RF says as much about Walker as it does Herrera.

KC had 3 all star reps while Toronto only had 2. Toronto still beat us by one.

The team lacks star power and that is true. I think if you’re hope that we’ll get it by signing some big free agent or trading for it. I some disappointing news for you. Bloom is here to revamp the way we develop players with a reduced payroll. Granted not Tampa low but you begin to see what the ownership sees and wants from him.

Interesting tidbits in these articles. Seems to be some chatter that the Cards might keep Helsley and offer him the QO this winter.

Beaten to it but it would be interesting to see how Helsley’s camp and the Cardinals handle it especially if he takes it. Over 21 million on a one year deal is hard to pass up but I get the multi year option if indeed that would be on the table for him.

I would be completely shocked if the Cardinals made a qualifying offer to Helsley. That’s just not happening. Almost no way.

I tend to agree jnevel. That is a lot of money to dangle in front of a rather shaky closer just in hopes of getting the comp pick, which they would only get if he received a FA deal of at least $50M.

When a lame duck is at the helm, of course he thinks he’s a contender.

They all behave a bit like a duck. Lots of quacking.
