Ditto on jnevel explainer. My only question is where does “Contreras only going to catch about 65 percent of the time” come from? I don’t doubt you, but I guess that was decided when I wasn’t looking.
Was it not so very long ago that this board was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Carlson and dreaming of the problems he was going to solve? Or am I misremembering? Somehow so much of this stuff has a familiar ring to it.
“It’s so much easier, and more fun, to be optimistic than pessimistic!”
That would seem to sum up the Mo philosophy. And the great thing about dreaming, it’s free!
Judging the off-season so far, this doesn’t look like a front office making a serious effort to put a better team on the field.
Pretty much the same old faces. What makes us think/hope they won’t deliver the same old results?
As 2023 draws to a close nothing has moved the needle on my yippee meter even one point. And while surprises are always a possibility the outlook remains morose. It’s not Gray who’s going to transform us into a winner. Perhaps the offense could catch fire this year and give us an attitude infusion, but then again, without serious pitching help, perhaps not. One gets the impression the FO is not even trying. I think I’ll take a nap. Wake me when spring training starts.
For me, my best memory is the entire 1964 season.
After suffering through a whole childhood, all my personal playing days, college and then the army without a whiff of a championship, came 1964! Gibson, Boyer, White, Flood…
And what made it even better, my best friend was a Philadelphia native, which made that pennant run even juicier!
I’m with Bling on the problem of constant churning of the defensive alignment and batting order. Players need consistency and the daily experience of meeting the opposition in all its phases.
On the other hand, the ignominy of being deep cellar dwellers has no doubt lost its sting and offers these guys a certain negative comfort with the knowledge they can’t do worse.
There are teams that think like winners and there are teams that are satisfied to pick over the scraps left on the ground by the serious thinkers in hopes of getting lucky and sneaking into the playoffs with a wild card.
And tinkering with two seconds on the pitch clock? That improves what exactly? It smells of somebody at MLB HQ who doesn’t have enough to do!
I think they should spend more time thinking about undoing that incredibly stupid phantom runner rule.
I doubt that’s true Brian. I, for one, don’t care much about the Hall of fame or red coats. While it’s nice to have such an honor and I’m happy for a Cardinal who gets it, I certainly don’t buy an expensive ticket and pay exorbitant prices for a hot dog and a beer because Scot Rolen is in the HOF or Goldy might be one day. I pay outrageous prices because I love the game and enjoy the atmosphere at the ballpark.
Of course that’s just me and perhaps you’re right that yesterday’s heros do continue to suck in the big bucks. Yet as much as I loved Stan Musial, it’s not him that draws me to a game whenever I get a chance today.
On the other hand, I’m sure your finger is much closer to the pulse of today’s Cards fan than mine out here at the epicenter of rugby and soccer (ick!).
What’s the downside of waiting a year, see what kind of season he has in 2024, and structure an offer accordingly?
And where does luck factor into the calculations?
A hundred million here, a hundred million there, and before you know it you’re talking about real money.
Remember the good old days when baseball players had to “play baseball?”
A pox on the DH and its proponents.
Sure looks like we have a lot of candidates for DH.
Tell us the truth GC, are you Edman’s dad?
Boy that Ollie guy sure has a way with words!
I think Sooner might be on to something.
So far I don’t see any new element that leads me to believe our dear birds will be able to climb out of the cellar.
I’m afraid this news doesn’t move the needle on my Yippee meter.
I, too, am against trading Edman.
I also believe any player is tradeable under the right circumstances.
But I would like any trade involving Edman to be a clear upgrade or fulfilling a crying need, not just somebody who can do the job but is less versatile or who might be better someday.
1. Edman has proved he is a competent major league shortstop.
2. Winn is a youngster some hope will become a competent shortstop.
3. One can always discuss degrees of competence.
4. If/When Winn moves from 2), hope, to 1), proved, then discussions of competence/backup are more relevant.
5. I am much more concerned about our 2024 outfield. Thanks Pugs. I see where I went wrong. I thought that because the FO and the owners, being the only ones who can actually do anything to heat up the stove, were responsible for the cool temperature. But it’s just a fan thing. Silly me.
