This is turning into a game in which one play could break it open and win it. Excellent pitching.

Ouch. Another DP. I think Wong has been the front runner in three DPs in about four games. Needs to wear armor and crash into the second baseman.

Mikolas getting a far less generous strike zone than castillo

Runner on third, and Goldschmidt strikes out. THEN, we get the fly ball.

    That’s another sequence to hate.

Left out the part when Martinez tried to bunt to advance Edman to third. That was a bad idea.

Wieters put the Birds up 1-0 with a blast, right after I sighed when he fouled off what would have been ball four. Now Mikolas barrels one to the gap for a 2-bagger.

Good sequence of two pitches – solo HR by Wieters and double by Mikolas.

Thank you, Matt Wieters. Ks and DPs can’t screw up a HR. Now, Mikolas doubles. Get him to third and home.

You have to tip the cap to Iglesias robbing Edman. A very nice catch. It might keep Mikolas from scoring.

Goldschmidt is totally lost again. He looks awful and has killed a couple good scoring chances tonight. He might do better if he closed his eyes.

Goldy strikes out, strikes out, strikes out, strikes out. Then, just as you are ready to send him to Memphis, he hits a three-run HR. After the night you have begun with, you need at least a two-run double to make up for it tonight.

Castillo is done after six innings with 88 pitches. Dietrich is pinch hitting. Cards might need Mikolas to pitch another shutout, but it is good they’ll get three full innings of the Reds’ pen. Now Mikolas hits Dietrich on a 2-2 pitch after being ahead 1-2.

These last two outings have been sensational. Mikolas is, at least for the moment, an ace.

Mikolas deserves some run support, lets get going Cards!

Mikolas losing his edge in the 7th. Walked Suarez and Puig crushes one to the gap to tie it up. Reds now in a good position to take the lead.

Shildt needs to go back to managing school. That lead off was a dead giveaway, and the double sealed the deal. Oh well,

Now the bottom falls out. VanMeter crushes his first MLB HR and Mikolas has lost it now, giving up yet another hit. He leaves after four batters in the 7th, giving up three runs and leaving a runner on 1B. Goldschmidt’s failures at the plate are a real problem now. Helsley and Bader in.

Those two doubles with nobody out that never got to third loom large now.

At this moment, Edman has the second-highest batting order in the lineup at .275 (behind O’Neill at .306) and his SLG percent of .513 is no. 1, even ahead of O’Neill. It won’t continue, but it is interesting, still.

Martinez grounds out as Bader scores to cut the lead to 3-2, but Goldy flies out with a runner in scoring position.

Goldschmidt has failed in huge situations all season. Tonight might be the biggest example. His first season would have to take a crazy turn to not go down as a bust

This time, Goldy flies out. Last time, it would have meant something. Frustrating that we get hits from everyone except the people who were to be our leaders. Carp, Molina, and Ozuna are out. Goldy and DeJong are in slumps. And, we have won six of eight. Need a strong ninth from O’Neil, Fowler, or Wong.

Helsley gives the Cards a chance by keeping the Reds off the board. Score is 3-2 going to the 9th. Good news is Goldy won’t bat in the 9th unless the Cards retake the lead prior to his AB.

Too bad. Those two doubles were the difference. When we were losing, we weren’t advancing runners, like we didn’t tonight. The past week or so, we have been moving runners around. Not tonight. That is the difference between playoff teams and also-rans. I don’t want to trade for pitchers. I want to move runners to second, third, and home. Simple things.

Too bad, they had their chances. 2 lead off doubles and can’t get a guy to third not very good! Left Mikolas in too long? We got some hits but the top hitters were a rookie and our pitcher? Oh well, lets be better tomorrow, only one run difference. Go Cardinals!
