Braves pitchers last year? I would take Max Fried all day every day as a number 1, (50-22 so far?)
I don’t buy DeWitt’s comment about having to know a guy when they went hard after Stanton and Price, who he didn’t know.
The problem they have is they over pay for the Leakes, Fowlers and Matzes, (plus too many relievers to name). Like I said earlier, Mo does well in trades. Going for the mid tier FA’s, not so good. And that is me trying to be polite.
That is why Verlander was my #1 choice. Not a long contract and Mo has said he prefers a higher per year average and fewer years, (see Albert a when he left).
It almost seems like you take offense over anyone saying any Cardinal isn’t great. We all want them to do well, but can see the need to improve. I want Flaherty to be the ace he has shown glimpses of, but he is injured so often, I have doubts. Waino is amazing, and still a solid 2. Mikolas, again a solid 2. We just don’t have that guy the other team is scared of every time he pitches.
What HUGE contract have they given which failed? Heck, what huge contract have the given at all? The FA contracts that they have given that failed were middle of the road contracts.
Top shelf FAs are a bidding war. When is the last time Mo won a top shelf bidding war?
True, Mo is better at trades. There will be potential #1 starters available. Price in prospects might be high, but we need a dominant starter.
And as to having such a surplus, trade a couple for a catcher like Murphy. Good defense, good hitter, doesn’t cost a lot of $$$
Exactly, Forsch31. We don’t have an ACE. Sure, anybody can pitch like one now and them. I really hope Flaherty would become one, but his record health wise makes me find him worrisome.
We have a bunch a couple 2/3 and a bunch of 3/4/5 starters. Montgomery has always gotten a lot of praise, maybe getting him out of NY will help him become one. Waino was one, two 2nds and two 3rds in the Cy Young balloting over a 6 year period is definitely an ACE. I would love to have another. Still a 2/3 even closing in on 41 years old.
How do you define an ACE? A pitcher who you count on to end a bad streak 9-10 times. We don’t have that.

I read DeJong is only on the taxi squad for this series. Does this mean he may be moved in a deal and they don’t want him injured, (or looking bad against MLB pitching)?
My guess would be they have had him catch on the side and know he can. Why waste more knee strain if unnecessary?
Brian, the point of the post was Friedman vs. Mo, 2014 vs.2007, not the last time the Dodgers won. One WS victory each and Mo’s stated idea that make the playoffs and catch lightning in a bottle verses have a chance to win and go for it. I would prefer lesser prospects to the A’s for Murphy, Montas and maybe Trevino. Plus another smaller deal for Thor.

1. St. Louis Cardinals
Top prospects: The Cardinals have two of the most promising position prospects in the minors, in third baseman Jordan Walker and shortstop Masyn Winn. Walker has elite raw power and he’s crushing the ball in Double-A as a 20-year-old. If and when he begins to lift the ball more frequently, he’s going to solidify himself as one of the top middle-of-the-order prospects in the game. Winn, also 20, is holding his own in Double-A. He could be an above-average hitter and fielder at maturation. The Cardinals could also submit lefty Matthew Liberatore, outfielder Alec Burleson, and catcher Ivan Herrera to the Nationals. Each is either big-league ready or has already made their big-league debut. (Though Herrera, like the other catching prospects mentioned throughout the article, would likely have less appeal to the Nationals.)
Relevant MLB youngsters: The Cardinals have several young players on their MLB roster who could appeal to the Nationals as well. Second baseman Nolan Gorman has near-elite raw power and has made a successful transition from the hot corner to the keystone. Outfielders Harrison Bader (a defensive demon in center), Tyler O’Neill (a two-time Gold Glove Award winner who received Most Valuable Player Award consideration last fall), and Dylan Carlson would all make some sense. To think, that’s without even pondering if the Cardinals would move either member of their current double-play combination, Tommy Edman and Brendan Donovan.
Payroll situation: The Cardinals have more than $50 million in breathing room between themselves and the tax line. Their Opening Day payroll was also $9 million lower than it was last season, suggesting it’s reasonable to project them to add salary. It’s reasonable to wonder how much they could upscale, but bear in mind that Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina are both expected to retire this winter, freeing nearly $30 million that’s been earmarked for them in the process.
X-factor: There’s no perfect parallel for the Soto situation, but the Cardinals have waded into the deep waters in the past to land Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. (Goldschmidt’s contract, by the way, expires the same winter that Soto becomes a free agent, meaning the Cardinals will have additional flexibility at the perfect time.) The Cardinals can offer the Nationals a compelling combination of top-end prospects and established MLB players, and they should have the means of absorbing a bad contract if that’s what it takes to get a deal done.

I would say it’s because he started the season in AA at age 19 and didn’t turn 20 until May.

If you can believe the interview with Boras. Soto is wanting a higher annual value than any other player and a stable franchise. This gets him both, and another bite at the apple around 30.
And who replaces Yepez on the roster? Especially if they can convince Albert to retire and stay around as a coach or something for the season.
You have to give to get. I gave other options below that to make it work. We need another quality starter.
I hesitate using Baseball Trade Values, as they factor salary too much in my opinion. (They had a proposed trade of Goldschmidt, Arenado and Flaherty when he was worth something for Aroldis Chapman and $5 mil and called that an even trade.)

Noah has pitched pretty well this year. If he conitinues and proves he is completely back, may be they can sign him long term. If he signs elsewhere, you are out from under DeJong’s salary for next year and the buyouts.
