Bill Dewitt has publicly said that before he gives a huge contract to a player, he wants to get to know him. How he interfaces with his manager and coaches, his teammates, the front office, the fans, and within the community. When the Cards have stepped outside that model they’ve been burned. That’s why all your talk about a big FA contract doesn’t fly. Now, if you want to talk about a trade this off season for a top line starter who only has a year or two left on his contract, you’ll have some meat in that discussion.

What HUGE contract have they given which failed? Heck, what huge contract have the given at all? The FA contracts that they have given that failed were middle of the road contracts.

Let’s get this out of the way now. The Cardinals will not trade or sign for a top level starter. They like what they have and honestly I agree with the Cardinals on that philosophy. Why trade for a starter or sign one for 25+ million and risk that he gets injured when you can develop on the cheap.

Catcher…lol just watch they’ll roll with Hererra and Knizner. People have written this guy off in the cup of coffee he got. Christ man! They might sign some AAAA depth but that’s it.

If anything they might deal from starters depth to get some bullpen help. Which was the biggest mistake they made in the offseason.

I haven’t written Herrera off. I have said that about 1000 times. I am just not convinced he is ready to be the everyday C in 2023. The one glaring hole in our lineup has been at the C position.

And I am not convinced we have starter depth. We go through this every year. Just because you can rattle off a dozen names doesn’t mean you have depth. It just means you have a dozen names.

we need an ace. Flaherty had the talent and he still may be but his health is a big red flag.

When I look at the potential 2023 roster I see a huge hole for a catcher. That should be priority #1.

The rotation has plenty of candidates but mediocrity abounds. I’m not counting on Flaherty for much of anything but any success by him will be found money. I expect to see Wainwright somewhere in the rotation. Mikolas-Matz-Montgomery-Quitana-Hudson-Pallante-Woodford–Liberatore-Thomas-Parsons are all in the mix. Is Reyes toast same with Hicks?

The OF is the same collection of mediocrity and question marks all over the place. Unless O’Neill can find his past success and one or two of the youngsters step up it will be the same as this season. I am very much in favor of putting an OF glove on Gorman.

Our annual search for a SS will continue on if DeJong can’t show more offensively.

Also, can we count on Goldschmidt and Arenado to repeat their ’22 seasons?

Well that was fun. We’ll just have to wait to see reality fall into place = (What’s in Mo’s mind and DeWitt’s pockets).

I think you have to try a year of Herrera Knizner before you decide it’s a failure. However that does mean you need to make sure you have production elsewhere.

I also think that with DeJong’s “resurgence” they are giving him next year too (with Edman backing) so i think SS is not an issue and they are going to play out his contract and deal with SS after next year

When Carlson was moved to CF i think it was right for now, but i am still no convinced we arent just doing for the rest of the year and then look at the market. Having said that i do think they look at RF options too.

A CF/RF starting caliber vet is what i see position player wise, other than another journeyman defensive vet catcher for either MLB depth or AAA…I think Mitch Haniger is a perfect look…some injury concerns but isn’t young at 31 but not old…the injuries (freak mostly) may leave him a bit spry for his age. He shoudln’t command huge money nor a long contract. Solid all around player

After that, re-sign Quintana, he is somewhat a known commodity now to the team, that has value

try an extension for Montgomery and Flaherty

Jack, Mik, Matz, Montgomery, Quintana is a fine rotation especially with Hudson Libertore Pallante even Reyes lurking

Maybe you dangle Hudson/Libertore for a younger CF/RF with control…Hudson’s groundballs play and Libertore’s upside is plenty of value to find a quality piece back, regardlessi still look for a vet CF/OF to complement Carlson, ONeill

Waino retiring or not is a huge decision and if i am Moz I get that answer ASAP before FA opens, perhaps even now behind the scenes

    Quintana
    Haniger
    Romine (or equivalent)
trade Hudson for Tapia from TOR (though float Matz maybe as they know him)

    go with: (roughly)

    Mik, Montgomery, Jack, Quintana, Matz
Edman, Carlson, Goldy, Arenado, Gorman, Haniger, Oneill, DeJong, Herrera
Helsley, Geo, Genesis, Hicks, Pallante, Packy, Stratton, Junior, Verhagen
    Knizner, Tapia, Donovan, Noot, Yepez

    3 lefties in rotation
    plenty of power
    speed
    good defense
room in pen for people to stand out or take roles with performance
bench is pretty set and with not much at AAA ready to come up right away it looks solid and versatile

with Molina, Waino, Pujols, coming off the books I think there is enough money for Haniger and Quintana and raises

Solid and perhaps unspectacular offseason, but should put the Cards back in the postseason with the right veterans brought in

Good comment about Quintana, TJ. There is value with someone you know. That’s why resigning Waino or/and Quintana makes a lot of sense over someone from the outside. Think of signings like Leake, Cecil, Wells, Miller, VerHagen, Wittgren, Holland, etc.

Have the Cardinals essentially transferred or eliminated all of the duties and responsibilities of a baseball GM? I mean, what does he really do? Best I can tell, he doesn’t negotiate any contracts or trades. I’m reasonably certain he doesn’t have any sort of input or influence on any personnel changes or decisions. He certainly doesn’t hire or fire anyone. Why even bother to have him around? In my view, it’s not at all unlike having an electrician on the payroll of a plumbing contractor. He certainly seems to afford a lot of effort and attention to his hair, but other than that, what does he spend his time doing?

Yes, we could use at least a short term upgrade at catcher but I donut it happens.

I cán see the Cards getting the best minor league FA catcher on the Market. That may actually be someone with Major League experience. The guy they got from Oakland might even be the best. If I am a free agent catcher who hás tô take a minor league deal there is probably no.better place. You Will be competing with 2 guys who have failed tô establish tbemselves and who both have options. If you play well in the Spring the only impediment would be a 40 man roster spot.

I like Conforto in that role. I’d go one year on a guy like this so that we can sort out Walker/Burleson/Yepez among the corner OF/DH guys and give O’Neill another year to show who he is.

As for your other options…I’m still of the opinion that adding a #1/2 type is more important. Quintana is looking good this year, but there’s a decent shot that it’s a 1 year blip. I wouldn’t look to add him.

Edman and Gallegos are my top pieces to look for an upgrade in the rotation. Hudson is an ok one. Graceffo or McGreevy, Burleson or Yepez also look like trade pieces to me. Not all of them together, of course, but you can really make this team a contender IMO.

I will say that I agree with your stance on catcher. Herrera needs a real run as starter before we think of writing him off.

Agree to disagree on Quintana, i get the speculativeness, but i think they wouldn’t have got him this year if they didn’t think they might want to extend him and were confident in him.

Asa for Conforto, that’s good option too, but if we are speculative of Quintana performing shouldn’t we be even more suspicious of Conforto returning to form? I like Haniger and chose him because he has already returned from injuries and has shown so far he is pretty much who he was before and as he enters FA he at least can say he is healthy and performing.

Conforto seems a far bigger question mark. If he can make his way onto a team before the end of the year and show he is all there (Cardinals would be a good looking place to try it IMO) then he is def worth a good look. Though i would say he has a higher profile than Haniger and others and had he been healthy this past offseason he woudl be on a club with a pretty hefty contract

We don’t really need a whole lot. The big question will be Nolan Arenado. If he stays, then positionally, we are good other than these minor moves.

I like Tucker Barnhart at catcher. I think signing him would allow Knizner to get a final April/May audition and give the 22 year old Herrera a little more time in AAA.

I like Brandon Nimmo. Career .384 OBP. Other than Donovan, all of our non-Gold/Nado players have poor OBP skills. I think Pujols is 4th on the team.

Nimmo would fit in well with some CF experience too. A lot of the desire to add him would be based on the final six weeks of play for O’Neill, Yepez, Gorman, DeJong, Nootbaar, and Donovan. All of these guys going hot or cold has an effect on our need for another outfielder as Jordan Walker is obviously getting close.

My FA pickups would be Barnhart (1yr/%5M), Nimmo (2yr/$20M), and a reliever of the Collin McHugh variety. (I like Daniel Hudson as a Mozeliak-like move)

Card4Ever – Yes, the Cardinals have signed some “huge” contracts after a guy has been here and they know for sure he’s what they want. Holliday and Goldy for two.

Goldy was here for, what, a few months? He didn’t play any regular season games. It’s fair to say that the Cards generally play is very close to the vest. Whether that’s the best for the team is up for debate. They’ve been successful, but generally due to the farm system that produced very well under Luhnow and then more like decent under the Mo/Girsch regime.

25 – They have, over the years, made a lot of moves from the outside to try to shore up the lineup – Holliday, Heyward, Fowler, Ozuna, Goldschmidt, Arenado, etc. How many really good bats have come out of the farm system? Their history is to emphasize pitching in the draft and then trade some of it for position players as needed – Gallen, Alcantara, Weaver, Gomber, etc.

Well they can continue to do what they have done and if you are fine with not winning a world series then ok. Sometimes to get a different result you got to do some things differently. Me personally I’m a fan either way but I sure would like another championship and I’d rather earn it than winning it with a hope and a prayer.

The Cardinals with 11 World Series Championships rank #2 all time. They go into each season with an opportunity to make the playoffs and anything can happen from that point on. I don’t need a World Championship every year to enjoy Cardinal baseball. I watch every game as a form of enjoyment and recreation. Especially enjoy seeing the young guys come up and play alongside future Hall of Famers.

    Not cute, willie.

You see, I know if I’m only happy if the Cardinals win the World Series, I’m going to be miserable 90+% of the time. That’s no way to be. Right? And by the way, I was probably an avid Cardinal fan long before you were born.

I thought it was hilarious. I always like how you tout how long you have been a fan as well like that means anything other than you are probably older than me. My happiness isn’t attached to the Cardinals winning at all but I believe if you play, you play to win. You have a good day.

Of course you play to win, willie.
But it’s not a “win it all or I won’t enjoy it” attitude. That’s too much of an immature stance. There are 30,000-45,000 fans at Busch for every home game. They go there to watch and enjoy a baseball game. Same with several million or so fans watching on TV.

Please stop with the go be a Cubs fan junk. Be nice to fellow Cardinal fans.

The Cardinals have won 11 World Series but none since 2011. It looks like 2022 will be the 11th year without a Championship. What is wrong with trying to put a better team on the field. I know, I know, “it is not the Cardinals way to get the elite free agents”, or “the Cardinals want to get to know a player before they give them the money”. Maybe some of us want to discuss what the Cardinals could do to make this team feared throughout the league. I can guarantee you that the Dodgers are not afraid to play the Cardinals in the post-season. I am sure they are more worried about the Mets or Braves or Padres.
