Well, we could always stand pat at the deadline. Or pick up a couple has-been pitchers again, for fringy roster players. At that point why bother?
As I have mentioned before I would rather trade O’Neill before Bader. O’Neill should be back with the club soon so he has time to prove he is healthy before the deadline.
We either need to trade for a rotation boost or a bullpen boost or maybe both.
We don’t really have a replacement for Bader. Carlson and O’Neil can play CF, but I don’t think the Cardinals prefer either to do so long-term. I think the trade candidates are DeJong and Luken Baker (both of which have almost no value unless we pay most of Dejong’s salary), Malcolm Nunez, or maybe Alec Burleson. So therefore, I think we are looking at getting a solid relief pitcher for Nunez with maybe another year of control. That seems light and probably not really worth it. But it’s the reality that the Cards are in.
They need a SP, for 2022 and definitely 2023. If I even think about giving up Nunez or Burleson, a SP with at least another year left is the starting point.
Prospect for prospect trades are rare, but might be worth a few conversations for Mo.
The Angels are out of contention. I know he would be a rental, but what about Thor? DeJong and a lower level lottery ticket. DeJong’s salary offsets much of the cost. Noah has pitched pretty well this year. If he conitinues and proves he is completely back, may be they can sign him long term. If he signs elsewhere, you are out from under DeJong’s salary for next year and the buyouts.
It would probably take more than that to get Thor. DeJong is pretty much a sunk cost at this point. The Cardinals would either have to eat most of his contract or throw in a high end prospect or both.
GS, because you would prefer to keep Bader and deal O’Neill, is the same reasons clubs would prefer Bader over O’Neill. In fact, I would prefer keeping Harrison also.
CFIC has it right for my money. The priority is a SP, which also makes the pen better when Pallante goes back to relief.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the wild card round now 3 games? No more one and done?
We don’t have 3 postseason SP’rs without lying to ourselves.
Other teams probably would prefer Bader but I am not giving him up unless it is a very high end starter with at least control through the end of 2023. High end CF defense is very valuable to me and I don’t like our options behind Bader.
I think I would take a long look at Madison Bumgarner. He isn’t the elite pitcher he was but he still eats innings and has a history of being a big game pitcher. He plays for a really bad team so a change of scenery might do him a lot of good. He would be owed less than $10M for the remainder of this year, $21.8M in 2023, and $12.9M in 2024. The Dbacks might kick in some money or maybe we talk them into taking DeJong’s contract if we throw in a higher end prospect.
There are rentals out there too.

Zack GreinkeI hesitate using Baseball Trade Values, as they factor salary too much in my opinion. (They had a proposed trade of Goldschmidt, Arenado and Flaherty when he was worth something for Aroldis Chapman and $5 mil and called that an even trade.)

McGreevey 11.2I think the time is right to go for it. I would hate to waste Goldschmidt and Arenados near mvp perforfornances, along with all of the young bats we have to surround them in The lineup. I would like to see us get an elite starter, and another good to very good reliever. It’s going to cost us a prospect or 3, which we have. Perhaps this is an off-season free agent signing. If the price for Snell is not too high, he would be my target. I like the suggestion of including Pomeranz, even if he is out the rest of 2022. Perhaps they would take Dejong, along with some cash and prospects, which might work for both teams. I would love to get Bernard from the Pirates, or Robertson from the Cubs, although inter division trades aren’t common.
Maybe getting Tepera from the Angels might be a good option. He is signed through next season, and could close games if needed.
I think I would take a long look at Madison Bumgarner.
I’d take Corbin over Bumgarner. Washington would be more wiling to take a flyer on DeJong too.

There’s better options and I think he’s going to be able to chose his destination and it will be Houston.
I don’t see Mo blowing up the young talent at all. The only young bats I see moving would be the likes of Baker, Nunez, Gomez. Guys that are clearly blocked and limited defensively. There’s also the guys like Delvin Perez, Julio Rodriguez, Torres who are still on the “prospect list” but their value has clearly fallen off a lot that maybe seems like an overpay but a team willing to take a chance for a pending free agent (ex. Thomas for Lester)
JJ is spot on, the Cards will not get a top 2 seed, so they will have a 3 game shootout. Miles would be fine, then we throw one of the other #4-5 starters at them and pray for a rainout? Do we have a 2011 Carpenter? The answer is no

You have to give to get. I gave other options below that to make it work. We need another quality starter.
I like the idea of BOTH Syndergaard and Madbum when it comes to a 3 game playoff or the playoffs in general. At least the Cards would have a chance compared to using Hudson.
Would DeJong and Woodford get Noah? As I’ve said a few times, their MI is so bad DeJong would be a big upgrade for them and Woodford could get a fair chance. Or even Sosa and Woodford.
MadBum would probably have to come with a little of his salary paid by the DBacks in 23.

24 – 14MI would have guessed he had a full NTC, which would have made it difficult, but it actually is only a 5 team NTC and I’d reasonably doubt the Cards are on it. With roughly $11M in 22 and $14M in 24, that seems fine and do able, but assume they kick in 8M for 23, what would that cost in talent headed their way? McGreevy and Capel for MadBum and a 8M check in 2023?
Carlson for Gallen would be my preference, but I’d put that at 0.0001% chance of happening. The two above are at least somewhat realistic.

Syndagaard does sound interesting. And trading Dejong might make the deal work. Cash surely would have to be sent to the Angels for PDs 2023 season, and probably 2024 buyout. I wonder if Noah still throws near 100?
I wish we could pull a Larry Walker type trade off for at least a top flight starting pitcher. I also would like to get Bednar from the Pirates, but Pittsburgh and Cincinnati seem least likely to deal with us.
C27, Bednar would be great, but as you mention, trades within a division are so hard to pull off and I’d guess the other 4 teams don’t necessarily want to help the Cards.
The Tigers have a few BP arms that could be options. Even with a rotation upgrade or two, a lefty BP arm wouldn’t be awful if they are serious about contending in 2022, but with the 3 old fellas fair well tour continuing, $ is being printed so do they care?….
