should Edman be on 3rd SoCal?
I agree with others. Edman made two errors. He looked like Suppan running the bases from 3rd in game 3 of the 2004 World Series. Very hard to watch.
My favorite part of scenario B is having the Brewers beat us in game 5, with Cincy down 3-0 in the 9th at Twins. (Both afternoon games). Brewers poised for 2nd place. Reds tie it up in the 9th, and win it in extras, and the Brewers go from 2nd place to OUT, losing the tiebreaker to the Reds. (Assumes Giants or Philly is 7th seed.)

Here’s a twist on B, called C. Again we win only 2 of five from Brewers and are 29-29 with the Brewers 30-30. In this scenario Reds go 0-3 and are out, and so we cannot get past the head on head record with Brewers, so it seems like the Brewers will get 2nd place.
But Philly does well for 2nd place, and both the Marlins and the Giants finish 30-30. We hold the intra-division tiebreaker against both, so MLB forces us to Detroit to play at least one game, for if we lose both, we are out, ending 29-31, and both Marlins and Giants become 7th and 8th seeds. We win the first game in Detroit, eliminating this 0-2 scenario, so MLB cancels game #60 Vs Detroit, we finish 30-29 for the season, and win 2nd place!
Thank you Brian. A few minor nuances:
If we win 5 against Brewers, guaranteeing 2nd, and the Padres lose their 4 Vs Giants, MLB could force us to play one or two in Detroit, as we hold the tiebreaker over the Padres for the 4th seed. This, unless the Cubs fold and we somehow win the division.
If we win only two Vs Brewers, and split in Detroit, finishing 30-30 with the Brewers, we still might get 2nd place if the Reds are also 30-30. I believe we are all 10-10 head to head, and would go to Tiebreakers for last 20 games (or intra-division?) I haven’t looked at last 20 but both we and Reds best Brewers on intra-, etc.
On to Brewers. If we could win 3/5 I think we are likely to avoid flying to Detroit. 2/5 will likely require 1 of 2 in Detroit. Hate to waste a starter. Go Ponce!
But if we aren’t ahead of reds and Brewers by two+ games by Sunday, we have two to play Vs Detroit on monday.
I suppose Shildt could save our top 3 for the 3-game playoff series starting Wednesday, but I’m hoping we play the Braves or Cubs. That could be position 6 or 7, as Braves and Cubs will be 2 and 3. So the Detroit games matter little unless we waste our best starters.

So does this mean that Helsley is case Alpha? Mo has said that everyone caught the covid on the plane except the original case, and Helsley certainly didn’t catch it on the plane, as he was already contagious in St Louis.

I’d be happy if the Brewers run their win streak to 14 (sweeping the Dodgers), as long as we sweep the Cubs this weekend, all things considered. But I’d be happier if they lose one of the first two games so we can rest Flaherty on Sunday.

The Brewers might be a tad miffed, however, by the Cubs’ lineups in those final three games.
That hardly bothers Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who announced Thursday that pitchers Yu Darvish and Kyle Hendricks will be shut down for the rest of the season, as well as perhaps Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward.
“I will put out the appropriate guys to play based on what’s good for our people, not for their people,” said Maddon, who already has ruled out All-Stars Kris Bryant and Javier Baez because of injuries.
“We’ll put a good team out there, regardless. Now, of course, (the Brewers are) going to bitch. Of course they are. I get it. Quite frankly, there are certain things I don’t give a (expletive) about.
“That would be one of them.”
285 pitches for the Cubs pen in the last three days. In a non-expanded bullpen of 8 men, that would be an average of 35 pitches a day for each and every one of them. They will either be gassed, or using their scrubs. Will be interesting if a rain delay knocks out the starters.
Looking at the Cubs rotation, they are set for Darvish, ??, Hendricks/Lester all on full rest. The second game is a puzzle, unless Hamels can actually pitch.
The nice thing about winning at least one more of the next two Cubs games is that they will save Hendricks for the wild card game instead of sending him against Flaherty on the last day.
