We did not have a Reds thread before…
BREAKING: Third baseman Mike Moustakas and the Cincinnati Reds are in agreement on a four-year deal, league sources tell ESPN.

Mike Moustakas' deal with the Cincinnati Reds is for four years and $64 million, sources tell ESPN.

December 2, 2019 at 2:59 pm #115854And they're not done, either. The Reds have plenty more money to spend this winter and they see the National League Central as ripe for the taking. Remember, too, their rotation, with Trevor Bauer, Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray and Anthony DeSclafani, is already very good. https://t.co/Ell2Ir7Hhr

December 2, 2019 at 6:06 pm #115863Seems like an odd move for the Reds, as they don’t really need a 3B. Is Moustakas really playable at 2B? At that deal, I’m very glad we missed out on Moose. He could hit 40 HR at GABP though.
December 2, 2019 at 6:12 pm #115864Will he be bad on the road at 2B though?
December 2, 2019 at 6:20 pm #115865Votto, Suarez, Moose: there’s some thunder coming from that infield in that park.
December 2, 2019 at 6:39 pm #11586616 million per for a guy the wrong side of 30 playing the keystone position with limited experience they can have him. This deal is the clubhouse leader for worst offseason contract and we are still six days away from the winter meetings. No doubt he could hit a ton of homeruns in the home ballpark but the player age, position, and years/money just don’t make sense.
December 2, 2019 at 7:32 pm #115869Moose played 2B as well as he did 3B last year if you go by DRS. Nearly a third of his innings were at 2B and Fangraphs has DRS=0 for both positions. I would not like the 4-year length of contract, seems like a lot of risk.
On the other hand, Moose is younger than Goldy, they had similar offensive output last year, and similar WAR. If last year was not a just a one-year drop-off for Goldy and represents a real decline, then Moose might end up looking like a great bargain in comparison. Still, I wouldn’t want to commit four years in Moose even if the need was for 3B.
December 2, 2019 at 11:41 pm #115873Looks better than the Carpenter extension.
Reds could end up winning this thing if the Cards and Cubs do next to nothing.
December 3, 2019 at 10:41 am #115886I am a big fan of Moose but the Reds overpaid to get him, and then are going to play him at 2B? Yikes!
The Brewers were so smart to get Moose on short term deals.
December 16, 2019 at 8:37 pm #116940Source: Wade Miley and the Reds have agreed to a two-year, $15 million contract with a club option for 2022. Deal can be worth $24 million if option is exercised.

December 16, 2019 at 9:10 pm #116945The Reds certainly have been making a splash with acquisitions since the trade deadline of this year but how that talent will mesh is another story. They could finish anywhere from 1st to 4th and it wouldn’t be too surprising to me.
December 16, 2019 at 9:56 pm #116951It is probably not fair, as every year is different. But I can still recall vividly last winter at this time when some proclaimed that the Reds had won the entire MLB off-season after adding Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood, etc.
They did improve from last place in 2018 to fourth, and closed the gap to the Cards from 21 games back to “just” 16 games last season.
I will reserve judgment until they actually show me they are a contender. I do give them credit for continuing to try to get better.
December 19, 2019 at 9:16 am #117151The Reds are the latest team to engage with the Indians about a potential Francisco Lindor trade, per source. It’s unclear if there’s any traction, but Reds have been aggressive on trade market before (Bauer, Puig) and have attractive trade chips (Senzel, India among them).

December 20, 2019 at 10:45 am #117200Everyone keeps hyping up the Reds rotation, but I don’t see a lot of upside past Castillo. With regards to the other players, doesn’t GABP suppress RH power? Moustakas may hit 40 HRs but I can see his BA and doubles power dwindling substantially. If they go after Ozuna, the same would occur imo.
December 26, 2019 at 5:54 pm #117687One less place for Ozuna if this comes to pass? Other starting OFs are Senzel and Aquino. No DH in the NL.
Reds are in talks for CF Shogo Akiyama, previously of Seibu. Thought to have decent chance. @nikkansports was on it

December 26, 2019 at 6:39 pm #117689Arizuna, I mean, Arizona is one less place for him as well now that they’ve signed Haystacks Calhoun.

December 26, 2019 at 8:22 pm #117697Look him up mudville. 600 pounder. Pugs muscled him around though.
December 27, 2019 at 9:51 am #117728I remember Haystacks. Heck of a wrestler.

December 30, 2019 at 3:27 pm #117909Does this take the Reds out of the Ozuna sweepstakes?

December 30, 2019 at 3:58 pm #117910That’s a really good move for them. They were going to be counting on a lot from some younger players and he can play CF. Big addition.
