I’d say Rom is a miss. Put him on the shelf and bring him back in a couple of years and see if he’s any better.
He could be suggesting that the Cardinals are making up an injury so they can skip a not ready for the majors Liberatore.
Congratulations to Hudson on being penciled in as a starter for 2024. Now, Mo only has to find two and if Thompson finishes strong just one.
LA
There’s no way that the Cardinals acquire three # 2 starters.
Thar’s why I say trade Goldschmidt this winter. Put him along with Gorman, Carlson and Donovan and who knows what you might be able to get

You’ll forgive me, I hope, but it’s Whitey Herzog and I. Don’t set a bad example for the kids.

I think the event might have been more recognizable if it had been Rom (whoever that it is) striking out 10 in five innings in St. Louis. Your enthusiasm is scary sometimes. The fact is this organization is in free-fall. They don’t seem to understand what the problem is, what the solution is or in what direction they are heading. You might want to temper your optimism over Rom and the six greatest hitters in baseball until the day arrives where the Cardinals actually win the first round of the playoffs.

Whatever Mo and junior say they’re going to do has to be put on the shelf until they do something. To make the Cardinals a championship caliber team has to be done from the outside. There’s no one from Memphis who is going to be the solution. We’ve seen how mediocre the stable of prospects is. The waiver wire is no answer and signing people who haven’t played in two or three years is not an answer. The only way to make the Cardinals very good would cost a whole bunch of money…fifty to sixty million added to the payroll. I don’t see Junior doing that. My fear is that they’ll sign another Matz or Leake and Mo will declare the problem fixed and say he is excited about this team. I just can’t trust those two do anything worthwhile.
They wasted the last ten years of a great catcher and they’ll waste all of Goldschmidt’s years plus Arenado I’m sure because they won’t add the quality external talent needed. That could change this winter IF and only IF Junior boots the payroll to 250 million.

You’re exactly right and that’s the problem. They never go far enough no matter what the situation is and that’s why the Cardinals will always be what a poster said once…a middling team.
July 30, 2023 at 5:19 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #229902It appears that the Cardinals are acquiring young pitchers with a future…that’s fine, let’s hope they pan out but it highlights the lack of a need for Arenado or Goldschmidt. Arenado is not a part of the rebuild. With fours years of service he could bring a huge haul of talent. he will never have a higher trade value than he does today or tomorrow. Get the Dodgers on the horn and get as much talent as you can get. Maybe add Goldschmidt and get even more. Keep going Mo, make me proud.
Does Suarez get to keep his uniform?
July 28, 2023 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #229486Arenado was a fool for not opting out. He said he wanted to be on a winner, which I assumed meant a WS winner…that will never happen here. He could have been playing third for the Dodgers this year and maybe be in the WS. So, I think if he is asked to waive his NTC for the Dodgers, it’ll be a big yes.

I never said any of those guys were bad. Carlson is the only one I think is mediocre. Any of those guys would bring something. Do they have the courage to trade Arenado and other good players? It’ll be interesting to find out.

If those are your untradables then you won’t get anything worth having. Nobody wants the guys left over. You have to give up talent to get something good. How stupid do you think the other GM’s are? They’re not going to take our scrapings and give us anything good. Just how daring are Mo and Junior? Do they have the guts to take risks or are they scared to fail? We’ll know in the next few days.
I saw Oppenheimer and it should be nominated for best picture, Cillian Murphy for best actor and Robert Downey Jr. for best supporting actor.

Excellent choices, I agree completely but there is a problem for Cardinal fans and teh front office. They want to send someone from Knizer, Yepez, Burleson DeJong, O’Neill. Those guys will get you about nothing. If you want TOP quality talent you’ll have to choose from Nootbar, Donovan, Gorman, Carlson, and yes, Walker and Winn. Right now I have trouble thinking Mo and Junior will do that. I see them siting on their hands and by way of explanation saying the players we have will just have to play better and not get injured. I hope I’m wrong.
Who would want Yepez or Liberatore. Yepez can only hot and then only occasionally and Liberatore is terrible (see his last start). You’ll need to dangle Walker, Winn, Nootbar, Arenado if you want to get anybody decent.
Love the chart…very illuminating and it begs the question with the Cardinals and Astros clearly ahead of everyone else why have the Astros been in the WS four times since 2015 and the Cardinals have advanced past the first round once since 2015? There are two possible answers. Either the major league manager and coaches for the Cardinals ruin the young talent when they get to St. Louis or WAR as a predictor of future success is not worth a pile of crap.
Sounds like Mo was refreshingly candid…that is new and welcome for me. I’m surprised that he said they would be focusing on 2024. Usually they hold on till the end but I guess he sees that this year is probably lost. If that is the case then the deadline moves could be serious.
The Cardinals organization continues to be delusional. They lose 15-2 but the game story on the website is, the Cardinals score two runs in the ninth. The entire organization is a joke.
People need to understand that nothing is going to force Junior into rash actions. Other owners would do crazy things but not Junior. They might fire the manager and/or some coaches but the payroll won’t spike. It’ll be substantially the same next year. What is needed is considerable talent from the outside. All-Star caliber talent. Not the usual junk they acquire and that would mean a boost to 250 million. Never going to happen. So, be ready for a middling team going forward. Not a bad team like now but not a tier one team.
Blingboy:
Thank you. I needed a good laugh…maybe we all do.
I still think the Cardinals will end up winning the division and Mo and Junior know that. They’ll keep quiet until they can say I told you so.
