LHP Jordan Montgomery (6-7, 3.14) vs. TBA
BSM // KMOX
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest Extra)July 22, 2023 at 8:56 pm #228799Taking a gander at the late SATURDAY out-of-town scoreboard:
The Reds win over the D’Backs by the score of 4-2 at Crosley Field.
The Brewers squeak out a 4-3 win over Atlanta at County Stadium. Albies left the bases loaded in the top of the 9th.
And the Pirates and Angels are playing later Saturday night out in Anaheim.
We lost a game in the standings today (Saturday).
July 23, 2023 at 3:42 am #228808If the offense can give us at least 10 runs we’ve got a real chance here today. Rah Cardinals!
July 23, 2023 at 8:07 am #228815May very well be Montgomery’s last start as a Cardinal.
July 23, 2023 at 8:17 am #228816Indeed ZTR, this could be Monty’s last start wearing Cardinal red, though getting one more in this coming Friday is certainly a possibility. Keep your fingers crossed that he does not sustain injury. However, one would think the Cardinals are doing everything possible to ink this fellow to an extension. How could Monty not be in our future plans? There’s many others that logically should be shipped off before Montgomery.
What’s on tap for din-din later? I’m staying home tonight. It’ll be just me and a couple of Applegate chili dogs with raw onion, potato salad and for dessert the neighbors brought me over a pie last night. I’m not a big blueberry fan, but this roasted almond blueberry pie doesn’t look half bad.
July 23, 2023 at 8:31 am #228819How I look at it: Montgomery is our best trade chip. He should net at least one AAA level, high prospect starting pitcher in return.
Trade him now, resign him in the offseason.

I read somewhere that Monty wanted to discuss an extention last winter, but Mo was not interested at that time. I suppose there could be a question of whether Monty would prefer to go elsewhere.

Yes, but money talks.
And the Cardinals are going to have to pay for pitching anyway. Might as well pay for someone who is good and we have well-scouted.
July 23, 2023 at 8:55 am #228823I’d rather hang on to Montgomery, bird in hand, until something considerably better comes along. I fear low-hanging fruit is already lying on the ground.
Sunday din-din in the works is flour-pounded rump steak and brown gravy with sauteed new potatoes and carrots smothered in onions. For dessert (sorry Pugs) I’ve got a blueberry pie in the oven now, just turning golden.
July 23, 2023 at 9:40 am #228824No problem whatsoever with plagiarizing my blueberry pie dessert with din-din tonight, Cardinal In France. Let’s call on all game thread posters to do the same today. One would think it would be in Rat’s palatial interests to set aside his turkey ice cream for one game and order a carry out blueberry pie from his Amish eatery. Besides, it would give Rat the opportunity to bestow another dandy tip upon his cute waitress over there…….which brings something to mind…….if I may, I’d like to very briefly drift off topic here to comment on how awful I think it is for business establishments to beg for tips when none should be extended. I think we had it right with our traditional tipping, but lately everyone and their grandma has their hands out looking for extra coin. First off, quality service is pretty much a thing of the past these days, so why should we dish out unwarranted cash? I have no problem just saying “no thanks” or just clicking on the “none” box when they come begging, but you see the nice people in line, some whom probably cannot afford the extra expense, who will give in so not to appear insensitive or not concerning of others……I could go on and on here, but let’s get back to baseball and blueberry pie shall we.
July 23, 2023 at 10:31 am #228831One of the beautiful things about France, Pugs, is one doesn’t tip in restaurants or cafes, unless there is some extraordinary reason to do so. Taxis, barbers, porters, yes, food and drink servers, no.
And I’m really in a mood for a win tonight after a frustrating two days. Rah Cardinals!
July 23, 2023 at 10:35 am #228832CiF, do you have to habla Francaise if you live there?
July 23, 2023 at 11:12 am #228833One of the many beautiful things about France, Pugs, is one doesn’t tip in restaurants
That sure would save me a pretty penny since I’m bacheloring it these days and am eating out often, Cardinal In France. I’m not adverse to tipping, just not when picking up carry-out orders. And I don’t like Walgreens and a zillion other retailers asking you for donations every time you come in. I’m not a tax expert, but I would imagine that they probably utilize those millions of dollars of donations as tax write-off for themselves.
I’m inclined to call today’s affair 7-4 Birds with Walker drilling another tape measure tater. I think this kid is doing just fine as a rookie. He’ll be putting up monster numbers in a couple of years. I’m hoping that he’s getting some 1st base defensive tutor ledge from Goldy. If he picks it up, I could see Walker being Goldy’s heir apparent at 1st. It surprises me that I’ve never heard any talk of this……it just makes perfect sense to me.
July 23, 2023 at 11:15 am #228836Bling: Have to? No. But your life would be infinitely simpler and more enjoyable if you do.
July 23, 2023 at 11:36 am #228845Today is our 9th game of the year against the Cubs and exactly zero of them have been played at Busch. That is a crock.
July 23, 2023 at 11:41 am #228847I always love it when they ask me if I’d like to “round it up” to a dollar amount, only because it affords me the perfect opportunity to say, “No, but I’m entirely willing to round it down.” They always say, no…At which point I then ask them, “Why not?” I’m then provided with a look on their face that can only be described as one of genuine bewilderment. It’s fun…Haha!
July 23, 2023 at 12:04 pm #228854Hey Pugs – there is a post somewhere where I mentioned that Walker will be our first baseman in 2025. I compared him a little to Albert as far as defensive position. Albert came up as a third baseman, played left field for a year, and settled in at first.
I can see Walker doing the same thing – outfield for a couple of years and settling in at first for the bulk of his career.
July 23, 2023 at 12:09 pm #228855#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said lefty slugger Nolan Gorman is dealing with back pain that could keep him out of the lineup for a couple of days. Marmol said he had “zero concern” with Gorman’s back pain.
Infielder Taylor Motter is with the team to replace the injured Gorman.

SS Paul DeJong RJuly 23, 2023 at 12:31 pm #228860din din alert. I just saw a browned chuck roast go in the crock pot with vegies. There have been some peaches in a bag geting ripe for a couple days and I see the caninster of flour out and a rolling pin. I have not looked, but if there is some vanilla ice cream in the freezer I’m going to step outside and take deep breaths until I regain my composure.
July 23, 2023 at 1:32 pm #228867I am already tired of O’Neill striking out. Just make it stop, Mo.
July 23, 2023 at 1:38 pm #228868Looks like a din-din fit for a king, Bling……as long as your ice cream isn’t of the turkey variety such as Rat’s.
Funny TD……. I’ll use that next time when they ask me to round it up……unless it’s for some sort of a kids charity where I wouldn’t have the heart to refuse.
I’ll jot your 2025 Walker 1st base prognostication down for future reference, BicycleMike. While Goldy is still here, I hope they have Goldy working with Walker on his 1st base defense. Who else better to teach the lad?
July 23, 2023 at 1:44 pm #228869Walker is Juan Yepez-level bad at 3B and the outfield. What makes anyone think he can play 1B?
July 23, 2023 at 1:45 pm #228870With 2 outs and nobody on, Montgomery boots an easy grounder and then Bellringer rings his bell to the tune of a 2 run jack to center. Now that’ll go down in the books as 2 unearned runs, which I think is absolutely ridiculous. The pitcher is the one extending the inning with his error, so his ERA should pay the price.
2-0 cubs as we go to the bottom of inning #2.
Walker is athletic and he’s just a kid. He’ll be transferred into a dandy 1st baseman, LACardFan.

Agreed. Pitcher errors should count against their ERA.
