Hudson had an ERA of 3.86 in his 3 starts in August. Small sample, but that’s pretty recent. Post arm issues.

Yeah, he’s looked good. Shoulder trouble hardly ever goes away for good though. But like I said, if there’s 4 solid guys, you can take a chance on a bum shoulder holding up. You should have a plan B though. Something besides another bum shoulder guy.

Weren’t Carpenter and Wainwright injured guys at one time?

Yes. Wainwright had TJ, I don’t remember about Carpenter. But I agree anything is possible. Hudson might stay healthy and be good.

3 starters added (from Mo). Mikolas. Matz / Liberatore. So we’d be stashing arb3 Hudson in AAA again, if there is even room for him, with the new prospect hugging I’ve been reading.

Don’t kid yourself about Libby. Mo can’t afford another blunder in trading Libby. The last Libby trade was a major embarrassment to Mo, who now has his wagon hitched to Libby, just like O’Neill.

I view Hudson as cheap insurance for next year. What is he going to cost? $3M or $4M? That isn’t bad for a guy capable of being a solid innings eater when healthy. No matter what the rotation on paper looks like in spring training we know the chances of everyone being healthy and productive all year is zero. Might as well have some experienced insurance on hand instead of relying on untested rookies. You don’t count on him but you stash him in a break glass in case of emergency situation. That is what the Dodgers do. They have led the league in injuries this year, especially on the pitching side, but they had about 20 pitchers capable of producing solid MLB innings ready to go. And they are running away with the division again.

I estimate 3mil. I’ll let the prospect gurus decide what the minors rotations look like.
He could also be a piggyback reliever to save the pen. The end of this season likely determines his fate.

Hudson’s career numbers are not only substantially better that those of Matz, but he’s also 4 years younger and comes to work for a lot less than the annual $11M required to get Matz to take a turn every 5th day.

Also this season, much larger sample with Memphis. Also one year, post injury return. 11 starts, 6.00 ERA. April 5.40. May 5.40. June 6.57.

I know you don’t do FIP, but his StL FIP this season is 4.92.

Maybe he and Matz have both turned the corner very recently, but the small sample is too short to count on. The final six weeks are really important for them and a number of pitchers.

The Cardinals need to acquire 3 starting pitchers that are at least Jordan Montgomery level (#2 starter).

LA…name pitchers that fall into this category? I can’t. If we thought Montgomery was one of these(I do) then why didn’t we make every effort to re-sign him?

Mo can’t afford another blunder in trading Libby.

Liby does have 85 MLB innings, although somehow it seems like a lot more. But the sole reason for the limited IPs over two seasons is he has always stunk so bad he cannot be kept in the rotation to get the innings count up. He couldn’t stick in our horrible rotation this year. Alcantara was beamed up from AA too, but then traded before he got a chance. Liby has had a chance two seasons now. Its mid August and he’s talking about needing time to break bad habits? Jeesh, gun shy is one thing, but Mo has to be realistic. We’ve likely already seen the best of Liby.

    Because Boras is his agent?

I think it’s safe to say Waino won’t be back in 2024, lol.
CBS sports just came out with an article called the 6 most disappointing players in MLB, one ‘winner’ and one or two ‘honorable’ mentions in each division.
All the ‘winners’ are players who were expected to shine this year, but didn’t.
There was one ‘winner’ in a different category, Waino. They lamented his decision not to retire with Yadi and Albert

LA…name pitchers that fall into this category?

I would exclusively shop in the segment of pitchers that do not have qualifying offers attached.

So, three that were traded at the deadline:
    1. Lucas Giolito
    2. Jordan Montgomery
    3. Michael Lorenzen (more of a #3 than a #2)

One that was pulled back from the trade deadline (and is now injured):
    – Marcus Stroman (this would be a short two year deal, and he would be replacing Wainwright in the rotation)

If we wanted a Top-of-Rotation candidate that would cost draft picks due to qualifying offer:
    – Blake Snell

Another name available: Mike Clevinger – though he may get tagged with a QO

The Cardinals have or had $45 million in salaries come off the books from: Wainwright ($17.5), Montgomery ($10), DeJong (net $6), Flaherty ($5.4), Hicks ($3.2), Stratton ($2.8). They can also free up $5 million by trading O’Neil.

So, if you acquire Giolito and Montgomery through free agency, payroll is roughly neutral with this year.

Third starter is most likely acquired via trade.

Both Carpenter and Waino came back after some pretty serious arm problems. Wouldn’t it be nice if Hudson could return to
    his 2019 form – 16-7 with a 3.35 ERA.

    1. Lucas Giolito
    2. Jordan Montgomery

One thing they have in common is a losing record. Why? Because they play (played) for teams with a disfunctional offense.

So do we want to sign one or both of them and have them end up with losing records next year? No. It would be a waste of Bill’s money. Yet the Cardinals are 15 of 15, and 29 of 30 in BA with the bases loaded. That is just an isolated stat, but it illustrates the fact that the narrative, that it is a pitching problem, is not as true as the talking heads have us obsessing over. The offense stinks too.

I had saved an article from a couple months ago. As of then, this is the NLC standings if the result of everyone’s one run games were reversed:

    [4] Chicago Cubs: 37-34 (11-7)
    [5] St. Louis Cardinals: 37-35 (16-8)
    [2] Cincinnati Reds: 35-37 (13-15)
    [3] Pittsburgh Pirates: 31-39 (7-10)
    [1] Milwaukee Brewers: 30-41 (4-11)

Notice we are 1/2 game out. Its not just the pitching.

    Nah, ain’t buyin’ it BB.
Our 109 ops+ is 5th highest in baseball.
Our 93 era+ is 26th lowest in baseball.

Timely hitting comes and goes and its bigger than the small sample bases loaded number you provided.

We are the only club in baseball to strand at least 900 base runners. We are tied for fourth in obp so we’ve had the base runners, but driving them in overall, has been a bad year.

With our three best LHB’s IL, the lineup looks real bad.

Not really, bc. The average is about 94 and it seems like they all hit 95 or 96 from time to time. Maybe that’s why not too many of them seem to have an ability to change things up and actually pitch in order to economically record outs. Everyone wants to take on the persona of a Big League Linda Rondstadt…
