Yeah, at least he’s a SB threat, but it’s not easy to get a nice lead-off from 1B after a K…Either Donovan, Nootbar or Edman routinely belong in the 2 slot next season. Take your pick. I’ll also say that although Goldschmidt’s not going to take off for too many SB attempts, I think he’s undoubtedly the best baserunner on this roster. He reminds me a lot of both Scott Rolen and Larry Walker. Excellent judgement, very smart and always entirely focused on the situation and where the baseball happens to be on the field of play. At any rate, game #125 places him where he ought to be in the order.
well, its 4-0 with nobody out in the 3rd. I guess that’s enough for me. Good luck to them. Better luck next time to ROM.
I’d say Rom is a miss. Put him on the shelf and bring him back in a couple of years and see if he’s any better.

I’m going to say that you cannot find a worse set of starting pitching (ERA) for a three game series in the history of major league baseball.

“Twig” Lawrence has made the rounds35 years old. Pitches alot better. Pounds the lower away corner on lh batters. Seems to really be able to put it where he wants it. May be good in the pen but theres the age thing there. Battle of the Titans for the cellar.Look on the bright side. Our Pythagorean win total has got to be dropping below our actual win total.

I listened to an audio clip of Oli’s postgame. Nothing but good to say about eveything and everyone. Its good to know that Rom’s stuff will play better than his game line. I guess there was a pop up that Winn didn’t get to and catch, but he’ll catch that ball tomorrow. Too bad for him the game was today.
Guys are giving it all they’ve got, according to Ollie. If the best they’ve got results in an 11-1 loss to a bad team, then we need different guys. Including him.
Just as a heads up. if anyone wants to hear Oli’s post game, but don’t watch it on TV because the audio is so bad you can barely hear him, there is a good alternative. Rob Rains posts the audio on his site and it is usually good quality audio. Usually, you come away thinking Oli was at a different game watching a different team than what you just saw.
The season was shot by the end of May and they officially waived the white flag at the trade deadline.
As Cardinal fans, we’re in a weird spot – facing a losing season. We really don’t know what to expect from players and coaches like say, Pirates fans do.
Win or lose most players / coach interviews are ‘coach speak’ – lots of tripe and tropes with very little substance.
On the rare occasions when we get a dose of reality from one of these interviews we fall off the couch, lol.
This pitching staff is just bad. For all those years we were told about all the young pitching studs in the system and Wainwright is the only one that ended up panning out. The rest either didn’t pan out of couldn’t stay healthy.
Missed this one as I was at a local SABR get-together with our chapter’s baseball card group. Had a great time sharing some of our favorite cards and stories.
Looks like I made the right decision. From the box score it appears Rom was just plain awful. Only one start, but it is another paragraph in what has been a continual book of disappointments, things not working out, and no answers.
I tend to disagree with the thought that all post-game manager interviews are “coach speak.” I’d guess that anyone who ever watched “Tony TV” would have to say that TLR not only refused to answer silly and mundane questions, but also acknowledged reality and it’s one of the many reasons I liked and respected him as a great Redbird field manager. When the team was displaying poor performance, he’d simply tell the pressers things like, “Maybe we’re just not good enough” or “Your W/L record defines who you are.” I thought it not only displayed an inate ability to own up to the team’s lackluster play, but also went a long way to motivate the players he managed to improve their performance on the field. Like him or not, Tony LaRussa never sugarcoated anything or offered up remarks that could be termed utterly inane. At any rate, I miss Tony TV. Even Mrs.1TD used to watch it with me and she’s not even a baseball fan. We used have some really good laughs together whenever TLR would let the pressers know how silly they sounded with their wearisome, run of the mill questions. Sometimes he’d place them where they belonged simply by the look on his face…Haha!
The TonyTV reference reminds me of one of the most famous episodes ever. As coincidence would have it, I was there in person that night.
The background is that the P-D ran a story about the Cubs with the title “No Tinker, No Evers, No Chance”. If my memory serves me, Goold was the author, but they said their editor (unclear who) wrote the headline.
This was the scene the next night. Because of the headline, TLR had vowed to not speak to the P-D, as he felt it disrespected the Cubs. He felt that it reflected badly on the Cardinals organization and wanted to distance the Cardinals from it. My guess is that Tony did not want to give the opponent any motivation, but I found it interesting then and still do how the team identifies so closely with the paper.
In the clip Jose Strauss asked the first question. Bernie then took over. Make sure you stay until the end…
An amusing and recurring part of TonyTV was a guy named Calvin May who was from a small radio station in IL. Never saw or heard any of his work, but he was always around at home. A tradition was established with the media that Calvin always got to ask TLR the first question. If someone else tried, TLR would stop them. It was always a softball question, but it did start the post-game relatively smoothly no matter how bad the game had been. Calvin was so proud he had business cards printed with “Tony La Russa’s leadoff man” under his name. Everybody liked him because what was there not to like?

Yeah, Goold was the author of that piece and I remember reading it in the Post on the old sheepskin newpaper format. TLR vented his frustrations with Miklasz over what he considered a disrespectful and juvenile sort of article published by the paper. I wasn’t aware that Strauss asked the first question at the post-game presser. That’s interesting. I always liked Joe Strauss and thought his team coverage was head and shoulders above Goold’s current coverage of the team. I once spoke to Strauss as my son and I were waiting for a crosswalk light to change while walking from our car on the way in to an afternoon NLDS game vs. SD in ’06. I miss his articles and game coverage. At any rate, the clip you posted is classic Tony TV…Haha!
Haha!…That’s funny about the Calvin guy’s business card! I’d have paid a dollar to have been present at any of those post-game pressers during the Tony TV era. He took quite a bit of heat for awhile and a lot of people in St. Louis didn’t like him, but as I mentioned earlier, like you him or not, you almost have to respect the guy.
I should have been clearer. Assuming Calvin was there, he asked the first question as always. Strauss had the first question in that clip.
Joe was brought in to toughen up the coverage as the P-D felt Rick Hummel was too soft. He and Bernie both came by way of Baltimore. Both were polarizing. Either you liked them or you didn’t with few in between.
I don’t remember the timing, but Bernie the columnist left the paper and Strauss moved from beat writer to columnist. I felt the latter job much better suited him because he was highly opinionated and that gave him an official and formal outlet to express it, rather than jousting with people on social media. I think Joe very much enjoyed being an agitator.
Another good one out there is from ’11 when after about the 3rd or 4th game of the season a presser asks TLR after an early season loss if he’s concerned about the lack of offense…”You think Matt’s not going to hit? You think Albert’s not going to hit? You’re going to tell me that Lance is not going to hit?…It’s the THIRD game!”…Haha!
I knew Bernie was from Baltimore. We were practically neighbors when he first arrived in the StL. area to work for the paper. I used to see him and speak to him quite a bit around the Lindenwood Park area when I was coaching my son’s basketball team in the early 90’s about 5 years before we moved to the county.
