For me it’s simple. We don’t have much talent. Memphis is not the hall of fame conduit that some people think it is and we never get anybody good from the outside. That’s it.

You are right on the button. Mo will spin the BS this winter as the reason for doing nothing and 2018 will be a repeat of 2017.

I for one believe that the team is doing the best they can and that’s the problem. If the team is going to be a legitimate contending team with a “real” chance to win the WS then the Front office is going to have to get serious this winter. Leake is not getting serious. Fowler and Cecil is not getting serious. Doing nothing at the deadline is not getting serious. I do agree that Matheny is not to blame entirely or even primarily. It is the Front office that is too cheap to spend any money and too scared to trade a prospect.
It’s just like John Goodman said in Arachnophobia, “Take out bad wood, put in good wood.” For the Cardinals, “Take out bad talent, put in good talent.” They need a complete overhaul this winter. I would tag ten people to stay from this 25 man roster and make sure the rest were gone from the organization. Spend that 60 million in TV money-raise the payroll to 200 million. Then get ready to play major league baseball next year and not Band-Aids and promises.I would have criticized a slug if indeed it was as they usually are. Now, if they had acquired Britton then I would have been very happy. i.e. get top notch talent and not garbage.
You are right about punting this season and then approach things this winter. But they will only grab slugs and low hanging fruit.
Mo or the new GM, I forget his name, will trot out the usual talking points.
1. The players we have will just have to perform better.
2. We can’t block players at Memphis.
3. We don’t want expensive contracts that will prevent us from doing something in the future (though what that something is I don’t know).

Even typing these makes me laugh out loud.I don’t suffer any angst like some on here. The front office is straightforward and honest. They never promise to do anything and they don’t. They didn’t lead anyone to think there would be action at the deadline so no one should be surprised let alone angry. They won’t do anything this winter but they never say they will. They’ll go to the winter meetings say hello then come back home. That is the “Cardinal Way.” Get used to it.
Exactly! The bullpen is charged with holding a one run lead almost every time. They’re going to give up a run occasionally and that usually means a loss. That cried out for a trade at the deadline and they did nothing. Frustrating to be a Cardinal fan sometimes.
Congratulations on the date. No they didn’t challenge. Part of the Cardinal Way. You don’t try at the deadline and you just take everything lying down in the game.

1. Then it’s working because they frequently resemble a minor league team.
2. It is used freely by the media, fans, forum posters and the Cardinals themselves to refer to their way of doing business.
3. I am hijacking the manual title as a moniker for their way of assembling team using kids and crap that they sign cheap or as the case the deadline…doing nothing.
I read what Mo said and after listening to him for a few years I just laugh. He is so full of BS, which is his job but it gets old. Teams all over baseball put deals together to help them for the playoff run but for some reason the Cardinals are unable to do that. For some reason only the Cardinals are unable to find a partner. Only the Cardinals are unable to make a deal that is favorable to them. Only the Cardinals are unable to make a deal that will help in 18 and 19. Only the Cardinals are unable to “Invest” as Junior said. It used to be frustrated but as I said now it’s just funny. All the talk of we were in contact with teams and “tried” to put deal together for a bat or a relief pitcher. To me that’s all crap. They had their plans going into the deadline and they knew exactly what they wanted to do and they did it…nothing. Welcome to the “CARDINAL WAY”!!!!!!

I said all along that they wouldn’t do anything. Listen to me the next time. The Cardinal Way is to develop minor league talent then add a second tier type here and there like Fowler, Cecil, Leake etc. and hope for the best. Don’t get “worked up” over potential “BIG” deals because it’s not going to happen. It will be the same thing this winter so relax and watch for more of the same.

The Cardinals don’t make big trades. They don’t acquire quality talent.
Stanton is never coming to St. Louis.
With a few minor tweaks the roster is set for this year and next year. Get used to it and it will hurt less when they do nothing this off season.
I’ll say this again and I’ll use very simple language. The Cardinals do NOT make big deals for big players. Holliday was the last one in in 2009. They acquire slugs, retreads and low hanging fruit. Mo’s recent acquisitions that had him “excited” about this year’s team was a mediocre starter, a decent but not good center fielder and a so so reliever. We never get the very good players and we never will. Talking about Quintana, Stanton, JD Martinez and others is a ridiculous waste of time. And now with Duke reactivated Girsch will use Mo’s old line of, “Well, with Duke coming back that’s like trading for a big time reliever so the bullpen will be fine.” This Gonzalez trade may not be the last one but it could be so don’t hold your breath for some big trade to lead us out of the wilderness.
