TD, Walker wouldn’t have to face those guys. Today’s players are no comparison. His biggest issue would be today’s infielders who can’t throw over without bouncing it or skying it.
German might be a good pickup. He could be got through trade or free agency, depending if the Rox pick up his team option.
Walker isn’t a ‘fluid’ thoroughbred athlete.
He’s not even an adequate outfielder. Balls he doesn’t get to that fall for hits don’t show up as errors.
He turns the wrong way quite a bit.
Isn’t his ‘natural’ position 3b? Look he’s 6’5″ and does not have jets. He’s not slow but he doesn’t have make up speed.

I expect both Giolito and Clevinger to be FA’s this winter, and if BillyMo has interest in them, I expect it to be then, not now.
It’s not a bad idea to let Hudson, Liberatore, Thompson and Rom start in Sept. It’s what rebuilds do.
The argument for picking up Giolito or Clevinger now is that at the end of the season, you get five days to negotiate with them before any other team does.
At least gives you a chance to feel out their expectations going into the offseason.

Yes, but the Cardinals would have a head start in negotiations, and the player would have the knowledge of the team and city.

Yes, based on how dreadful this team is in all facets of the game, that seems like the more likely outcome.
Clevinger has a mutual option for 2024. So it sounds like the Cards can keep him if they want to.
No, not really. Mutual options are almost always declined by one party or the other. It’s just a way of spreading out the salary into multiple years. Could be done for Competitive Balance Tax purposes, could be done because the company that paid him planned to trade him if they weren’t in the playoffs.
If Clevinger continues his production thru end of season, I expect him to decline the 12mil mutual option, pick up his 4mil buyout, and look for a multi-year in free agency.
I believe the 4mil buyout is guaranteed, as long as *either* party declines. If you know this to be incorrect, let me know.
Clevinger is owed 5.42mil thru the end of the season due to the 4mil buyout. 5.4mil one month rental doesn’t sound like Bill.
Cots shows Clevinger @ 1/12mil for 2023. With an 8mil salary the buyout seems guaranteed. Cots also shows a 12mil hit on the CB tax total for 2023, so I’m basing my position on how Cots lists him.
An article on Sports Illustrated site suggests the Cards could re-acquire Bader. It sites outfield injuries as a reason for interest. I don’t think there was any eveidence that it is actually being considered by the Cardinals.
A word of warning. Once you click on one of those SI clickbait articles, your feed gets flooded with them.
CF is a hard position to stay healthy at, and Bader has his own injury history. You almost need two legit centerfielders available.
Depending on who BillyMo trades for pitching, Noot, Edman or Carlson; there may be a need to backfill at CF.
You can’t count on O’Neill, he just misses too much time. For an estimated 6mil next season, I’d hope he gets non-tendered or traded away, which also subtracts another outfielder from the roster.
I think they’ve seen enough of O’Neill, and I doubt they go with two weak defenders at the corners. Burleson and maybe Palacios could be 4th and 5th outfielders, which covers CF backfill, but we would need an everyday LF.
Another consideration is we don’t have a blueprint for how BDW will respond to this kind of season and all those empty seats. We could hit opening day with Walker at first, Edman at second. Gorman could be at third. We don’t know.
I like Donovan in LF if all of Gorman, Noot and Edman are still here. You’re right, we don’t know. Edman could be the everyday CF, or could be gone!

Once upon a time, SI was a leader in sports journalism. As bling noted, now it is little more than a clickbait factory. I stopped going there some time ago.
In all honesty I can understand why some say we shouldn’t extend Goldy right now. He turns 36 on September 10 and still has one year left on his contract. I get it. It wouldn’t be a bad decision to see how he performs next year before making the decision on 2025 and beyond.
But I do not agree with trading him this winter unless we are admitting this is going to be a long rebuild. If the Cardinals are serious about competing in 2024, and I would like to think they are, you don’t trade a player of his caliber. We may think we have someone on the current roster to take his place right now but I highly doubt it.
I agree don’t trade him. Lets see how 2024 goes for him. But I am still thinking we shouldn’t extend him.
