    Texas Card:

Hosmer, Myers and Darvish. How is that 5 players?

You’re right for the salary. Some would want the Front Office to spend 20 million on a starter, not likely to happen. For me, I would’ve passed on Wainwright and put Ponce in the rotation. But IF he stays healthy and he can still pitch then it’s a bargain.

90 wins? Because of one acquisition? A good acquisition to be sure…an all-star but there are still many holes in the Cardinals roster. Win the division? Probably but we need to play the season first.

Carlson is an easy choice and I’ll take him.
A more daring choice for me is Thomas. If they don’t waste his potential starts with Bader he could break out.

No, Brian I don’t think it aged badly. Now, Arenado was a pleasant surprise and he will certainly help but they need much more than just him. Mo said the heavy lifting is over. That’s the problem every year. They make one move and quit. That won’t get the WS. You can’t take your foot off the accelerator if you expect to get anywhere. So, no, I have never been proven wrong. I’ve predicted failure ever year since the early teens and they haven’t won the WS. I was right all along. Show me a WS trophy then I will be wrong.

No Shaikin, Kershaw doesn’t get it. He works for a billion dollar team that can throw money away and still make a profit. There is only so much good talent in baseball and the players go for the team with the most money. The Pirates and Reds and ohters can’t spend like the Dodgers. If the players are going to whine about a floor figure then give us a ceiling. If they want a 100 million dollar floor then there has to be a 150 million dollar ceiling. The players can’t have it there way only.

Take a breath…Arenado was a great addition. This kid may flop like most prospects, Fowler was paid to just go away, no one else wanted Molina or Wainwright so they came crawling back here. Mo is hardly a front office legend for a couple of moves and I don’t see Branch Rickey soiling himself in amazement. Everyone should probably scale back the euphoria a little and play out the season.

The Arenado trade was the best news this off season but getting Fowler off the team is Heaven sent. What great news! Now, trade Bader next.

If they get a starter…okay but I hope they left enough money for another quality bat. They have exactly TWO proven hitters on this roster right now. Fingers crossed.

I was being ludicrous ( short trip for me) but now it could turn out to be my greatest call ever. I sure hope it happens. The opt out doesn’t bother me. I can’t see any team giving him more than 35 million. We’ll see. Now, I have to say this because it;ls true. They can’t stop now. Arenado and Goldschmidt are not enoogh to win the WS. They need to add more offense. This is a good start but you can’t put on the brakes. Those on here who work for the Cardinal’s intelligence division need to convey this to Junior.

For myself, I will always watch the games even if they only win 70 games or 60. I’m a Cardinal fan and you take good with the bad with the good. The next couple of years will be lean. @021 obviously but people think that with all the money off the books that Junior will bring in all kinds of big talent for 2022. Not going to happen, kids. They’ll add a couple of average to above average players. Will they help? Yes. Will it win the World Series? No. Junior has made it clear and he says the same thing each off season so there should be little griping from fans. “We will field a competitive team that will be in line for a playoff spot every year.” That’s what they do. Now, granted they missed in 16, 17 and 18 but they were there and with a push could have slipped in the playoffs. It just didn’t happen. As to signing big names and acquiring all-star talent (Goldschmidt aside) it’s not going to happen. And Junior will not feel any “heat”, Cardinal fans will come back at 3.4 mil as soon as the gates are open. They love their baseball no matter what the Cardinals do or don’t do in the off-season. Only media people around town and people on this forum think the fans will take it out on Junior if he doesn’t go all in for 2022. Junior will besmiling and counting his money with a low payroll and millions of fans gnashing their teeth to go through those turn styles. The next several years will be a time of glorious mediocrity. Competitive but not dominating, respectable but not good, entertaining but not captivating. Welcome to the future.

I think this is Junior’s strategy. He will tank 2021. No gate receipts or very little so who can blame him. Then in the 2021-2022 off season he’ll add some talent and significant talent. Not Arenado or any other BIG names but good players. His gamble is that fans will forgive the suggested stinginess for 2021 and come back to 3.4 million in 2022. It is a strategy that could succeed or fail…obviously. But it’s fun for me to watch junior’s business mind work. He is very smart and also kids, he’s very rich. A fan boycott would not be severe or last very long. Cardinal fans are sheep and he knows it. Junior will always come out a winner. Cardinal fans who want a WS trophy? Well, that’s problematic.

Thanks for that explanation on the Cardinals’ spending intentions, which they have made crystal clear. I have been saying the same thing for months but no one listens to me…probably wise.

All of this confuses me. Question for anyone: I have direct TV. Will I be able to get the Cardinal games like I always have in the past?

How am I condescending? Maybe Mo is trying to make a last minute deal fro Arenado. We don’t know. Come on, where’s your confidence in the Front Office? You need to lighten up…it’s just baseball. It has little meaning in this world.

Comparing spending in the NL Central to the other divisions is staggering and revealing. Wow!

You’ve done it again. I bet Mo is on the phone right now to Colorado, with Junior on the extension, and they are just working out the fine details. I’m going out tomorrow to get my Arenado Jersey. Yes! Yes! Yes!

Relax, it’s just baseball. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t amount to much.

Surely, you didn’t think they were going to do anything this winter. Next winter could be different, hopefully.

It’s simple; you can’t add significant payroll with no gate receipts. If the DH comes to the NL they “might” pick up a cheap “average” hitter.

Don’t punish yourself. You spent all off-season formulating all kinds of fantastic acquisitions that would have helped the Cardinals in 2021 but they were NEVER going to do any of them. Two reasons: 1. They want to look at the talent they have and 2. No gate receipts.

    Let’s get excited about 2022.

Take a break and play solitaire until spring training.

If anyone thinks the Cardinals are going to do anything “significant” this winter then they’re not listening. Mo made it clear at the press conference a few weeks ago that no moves were likely. Now, they always use the canned line “If something comes along that will help the team that we can make work then we’ll consider it.” Not Mo’s fault. Junior said No gate receipts…we are NOT spending money and we’re acquiring no one so go out there and do your best with the media. Mo as always did a fine job. He was asked point blank by Gould (I think it was him) if the outfield would be a good place to acquire a bat. That was the perfect time for Mo to say yes it was most likely since none of the positions are set in stone. He said nothing and after a few hems and haws, he moved on to the next question. I laughed until I about choked. It was the same as Mo standing on top of Busch Stadium and screaming “No acquisitions this winter!!!!!” We’ll get to see if O’Neill, Thomas, Williams, Carlson and maybe others are any good. We’ll also get to see some of the young pitching on trial. That’s what 2021 will be but even with that approach they could easily win the pathetic central division. So, there is no reason for Junior to spend money or trade prospects. Bring on Spring Training because I think the roster is already set.

You’re right. Mo’s brilliance prevented the Cubs in 16 and the Red Sox in 18 from winning the WS. Great job you have created a dynasty.
