I don’t blame Matheny for much. He makes bad moves and good ones like any manager. The problem is and always has been your buddy Junior. He won’t trade prospects or spend money so the team will always be in a miasma of mediocrity.

It is a weak lineup because we have nothing but weak lineups because of the lack of talent this team has because the front office has been on vacation for a few years. Yes, it is probably the best lineup that we could put on the field from the roster we have and THAT is the problem.

Boy, that is a weak line-up. It’s amazing we are as close as we are.

Lackey yelled at Molina. He will NEVER be a Cardinal again. So you can put that out of your mind.

Earlier you said that all the pieces were in place, they just needed to perform better. Now you say that Matheny was dealt a bad hand. So which is it? Is the front office at fault or is Matheny at fault. Somebody is responsible.

    No, BC:

They problem is they ARE pumping all cylinders; they’re just not that good. The whole notion that we have the talent we need they just have to play better has been used by these owners for years. Walt used to say that and Mo has many times. There are just too many guys on this team who are pedestrian. If they show up at spring training with this same roster, and admonishing people to “play better” then 20218 will be just as crappy as 2017. There needs to be a complete house cleaning this winter with big signings and big trades IF they want this team to get better. If they don’t care then they won’t do anything again.

    “I don’t see why it couldn’t succeed.”

I can see many reasons, the biggest one being the lack of talent.

That group will NOT succeed. If they make some significant upgrades then we’ll see.

In a very real sense they put up the white flag in April. The FO thought the Cubs would win 95 games, I think most people did. To match that the Cardinals would have had to go all in and that was never going to happen. So they looked at what they had:
    1. Could Grichuk and Piscotty blossom into productive players? Bust
    2. Would Diaz repeat on offense and get better at fielding? Bust
    3. Would Wong finally reach his potential? He did.
    4. Would Carpenter be a productive 3rd place hitter? Stupidest idea ever.
    5. Could Gyorko play every day and produce? He’s been helpful but not spectacular.
    6. Is Weaver ready to be a major league starter? Sure looks like it.

Now they know more about what they have on the 40 man roster.
If they decide to do anything, and there is no guarantee that they will, they have a better understanding of what needs fixing and if they can fix it internally.

    The jager:

But what if they don’t get a big bat?
What if the don’t sign any big free agents?
What if they don’t sign Lynn?
What if they do absolutely nothing?
Trading Leake may have only been to make room for Flaherty and nothing more.
Maybe they’ll do something meaningful but I wouldn’t place all your hopes for next season the St. Louis Cardinals…The Cardinals now, making any big acquisitions.

Bring the Rays to St. Louis.
Build a stadium in the south or by Earth City or even across the river.
    Call them the Browns.
Send the Tigers to the East and put the Browns in the West.
You’d have a great natural rivalry with Kansas City and Chicago.
    Good all around.
    SAVE THE BROWNS!!!

    BW:

It hurts when a player we like does badly and has a sub par year. The fact is IF this organization is serious about being a top notch contender and I’m sure they are serious but if they are then Grichuck, Piscotty, Leake, and perhaps others need to be gone from this team for 2018. Then either go all in for free agents and trades or bring up all the kids.
The problem is I don’t see where they have a plan for the future. What are they trying to do? I think doing nothing at the deadline might be symptomatic of them not having a clue as to what they are doing or what they should next.

These are all interesting and compelling acquisition ideas but if you will refer to recent Cardinal history; namely, the trading deadline of 2017 the front office discovered their new strategy…do nothing. Look for more of that in the off-season. Understand…Hosmer is not coming here, Moustakas is not coming here…no middle of the line-up guy is coming here. They are not going to trade for a”genuine” shortstop and move DeJong to third. When was the last time they made a “splash?” Holliday in 2009. Gyorko is under a good contract for 2 years I think, he plays third, DeJong plays short (he’s earned it), The Wonderkid is at second, Carpenter is at first. Pham has earned left and Fowler gets center by default. Grichuck, Piscotty or maybe Bader or Sierra as a long shot in right. Yadi catches of course. The line-up is virtually set already. Rotation: “Martinez, Leake, Wainwright and Wacha and either Weaver or Reyes. Rotation set. Bullpen: The great Cecil, Lyons, Bowman, Brebbria, Sammy T. Reyes or Weaver and some other guy from Memphis. It is possible that they do not acquire one single outside player. They may get a slug or two but no one worth having…Cecil’s brother maybe or his sister.

I can tell you for sure that Piscotty, Grichuk and Bader will not be the big bat. O’Neill? Who knows.

We need a time machine to send the front office back to last fall. Then they need to get serious.

“Been a long time that a Cardinal team was this hard to watch.”

Not that long. They were hard to watch last year and they did nothing about it in the off season.

Prediction: They’ll be just as hard to watch next year.
