I was way off on years and $.
3/$69 was just reported.December 9, 2025 at 10:53 am #297184
stlcard25ParticipantHigher AAV for a shorter time makes sense for Diaz.
Looks like the Phillies are getting Schwarber back, 5 years and $150M. I saw that the Pirates offered 4 years and $120M. Kind of a bummer for them to not add a legit MOTO bat.
December 9, 2025 at 11:59 am #297187In the FWIW department……Schwarber not going to the Reds does help the Redbirds.
Again, for what it’s worth.
December 9, 2025 at 1:41 pm #297194Late last night Oli joined the panel of pundits at the Winter Meetings for the MLB channel. He talked about Victor Scott and how much improvement Scott made last season and how hard Scott has been working this offseason. Oli said that he expects Scott to be much improved offensively in 2026. We’ll see. Then, one of the panelists asked Oli what position Weatherholt would be playing. Oli’s responded somewhat evasively by saying that Weatherholt can play several positions. But, at the end of his response, Oli said ‘Third base’ with an hint of uncertainty. Obviously, Wetherholt is not going to be playing third base unless they trade Arenado.
If Wetherholt can play third base, that would solve a lot of problems.
December 9, 2025 at 1:47 pm #297195Obviously, I love the position flexibility of several players currently on the roster. But I think in this case they need to put JJ at second base and just leave him alone unless he needs an off day…. DH in mid July perhaps.
Especially after he signs the LT contract soon and buys his parents a new house for Xmas!December 9, 2025 at 1:58 pm #297197I figured that was going to come up, and I get your point. We don’t want to disrupt the kid’s progress. But we have at least three legitimate second baseman plus Wetherholt, and we have no heir apparent for third base, especially if Donovan is traded.
December 9, 2025 at 3:14 pm #297199Hopefully, JJ already took care of Mom and Dad after he received almost $7 million to sign!
It will be interesting to see if Bloom will try any long term deals with young players.
December 9, 2025 at 4:23 pm #297202Winn, Herrera and JJ are the most obvious options, as long as it’s not 5+ years, Burly could be an option.
Can they please sign Pallante to 7yr/210M as well? In 2025, he earned a…. Bullpen spot

ParticipantIf both Arenado and Donovan are gone, and JJ plays 3B, who plays 2B?
December 10, 2025 at 5:29 am #297220If both Arenado and Donovan are gone, and JJ plays 3B, who plays 2B?
Gorman or Saggese or Fermin or Prieto.
December 10, 2025 at 9:03 am #297237Bling, to add on (and still hope it’s just JJ’s on 5/1/26) Torres is over Fermin and Prieto and even Church for me if they care about 99 vs 101 loses in 2026.
OBP and IF/OF versatility, diamond in the rough…. .441 OBP (not a mistype) in 2025, .390+ in minors, infield, can play CF, can be C #3, he’s my pick after Saggese.
December 10, 2025 at 9:54 am #297243If they have nothing up their sleeves then why are they even there? Junior is always trying to save money and I agree with that. But he could’ve told the POBO and his staff to stay in St. Louis and then he’d have saved the hotel and meal expenses.
December 10, 2025 at 11:20 am #297244Torres is over Fermin and Prieto and even Church for me
I think depth guys on the 40 man are likely to see time in STL.
December 10, 2025 at 11:24 am #297245
stlcard25ParticipantFirst, I don’t think that Wetherholt will play 2B. I believe we would be committed to Gorman and Saggese at 3B, which is better than trying two guys at positions they don’t belong at.
On the Torres/Fermin/Prieto/Koperniak, I agree with bling that we’ll probably see some of them at the big league level next year. Torres could fill in if Scott has a slow start and Koperniak could be playing if Nootbaar is traded or won’t be ready for opening day.
December 10, 2025 at 11:39 am #297249My guess is that on opening day your 3B will be Gorman and your 2B will be Wetherholt. Arenado and Donovan will both be gone. Sagesse will be the UT guy.
December 10, 2025 at 12:09 pm #297254GScott, without an extension for JJW I hope you’re wrong. Sagesse/Torres at 2B, Gorman at 3B the April 22 or so JJW is added to 40 and called up.
Why waste a year of control on an already given up season when 2027 might be another lost year? Absolutely awful player management if he is.
December 10, 2025 at 3:32 pm #297284Chitown, if JJ is as good as advertised he could very well finish top two in ROY which would give him a full year of service time anyway. The Cardinals would receive an extra draft pick.
December 10, 2025 at 4:44 pm #297292I’ll take an extra year of him in his prime over a draft pick every single day and twice a day in April through October.
2026 is a wasted year essentially, 2027 might not even happen so you maybe get him in 4 years that are possible?!? It’s a business and 2026 does not mean a thing. Winning in 2031 and 2032 however could….
December 10, 2025 at 6:30 pm #297295Does anyone here truly believe that Donovan is going to be dealt? Donny isn’t going anywhere unless a team vastly over-pays for his services. I would put the odds at about 8% of him being traded.
December 10, 2025 at 8:13 pm #297297I actually do Pugs…. Way to much value to lose out on if they don’t. Since it is snowing/sleeting/raining all this week I’ll make a few more predictions.
Donnie: 67% traded, zero clue where or when. Could be tomorrow or 2/1/26 -5.75M
Arenado: 75%, but not until Bregman and Suarez sign. New club pays 13.5 (1.5WAR) and 9 in 2027. -13.5
Jojo: 90%, then the Cards hopefully spend on 2 or even 3 one year lefty deals for more flippable assets at deadline -4.5
Contreras: 89%, now that Schwarber and Alonso have signed, his time frame moved up. Also, his market is going to be better than we expect. Mets, Brewers or BoSox. Wouldn’t have to pay any, but should for a better return. I’d take him at $41 with an option over what Alonso and Schwarber got. Cards pay $5M/yr for a great return? -13M
Noot: 12%, likely waiting on him to show health, could be a great deadline chip or bust. Now isn’t the time.
Walker: In Memphis for a while to save a year of service time
JJW: 100 ABs in Memphis to start
Doyle: Springfield then Memphis in 26, called up 5/1/27
Cots latest projection is $103M. Take off (-36.75) from the above trades and they are at $66.25M.
End of season payroll last year was just over $130M, so let’s say $126.25 for 2026. So $60M to easily spend on 1 year pitchers and an OF who is a righty. The goal needs to be 63 wins, and as of now, with so many innings missing of decent pitching and few runs being scored, that is sadly a proper goal.
May +15m
Sp2 +10m
RHHOF +10m
Pomeranz +4m
LHRP 2 +3m
LHRP 3 +2mTotal +44m
And still $20m less than 2025…. Bloom is just keeping that GM seat open for me fellas. That team could win 70!
December 11, 2025 at 12:05 am #297306And just as I thought. Mets interested in Contreras. They also have interest in Nootbarr. Wilson makes sense for them. I could see him getting dealt soon. Free up Burleson to first. I mean if Nootbarr is dealt to them as well then you’d think they’d like that more than getting into a bidding war for Kyle Tucker. We could fetch 2-3 top 15 prospects for them. Jonah Tong would be a centerpiece.
December 11, 2025 at 5:09 am #297308Booyah, I said Contreras to the Mets for Tong somewhere on here right after Alonso signed. I like it, but I’m not sold on Noot moving until he’s running and swinging.
December 11, 2025 at 5:30 am #297310I could possibly see Tong for Willson and Rainiel. Not that I want to trade Rainiel, but it would take something like that, considering the contract involved. It might be smart to cash in on the RR hype anyway.
