FYI,
From what I read on Yahoo Sports/MLB the Redbirds are open for business and looking to trade both Gray and Arenado. And willing to listen to offers regarding Donovan and Nootbaar.

November 14, 2025 at 12:49 pm #295850I’m fine with 3-4 of the above players being dealt. Donovan is a keeper. It better be an obvious lopsided deal in our favor before parting ways with Donny.
Din-din for me tonight will be a Catfish Fiddler/baked cod combo. Cole slaw, buttered Hawaiian rolls and Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies will certainly be in the equation as well.
November 14, 2025 at 3:39 pm #295852It sure sounds like they are trying to get payroll down to the $100-110 million range
Arrenado they probably have to pay 1/2 his remaining salary; he makes $16 mill this year, and I think has 2 more years left after 2026, the Rockies may be on the hook still for some. I would definitely trade and eat up to 50% of his deal
Gray they probably have to pay some of his, he makes $35 mill this year, assume they would have to pay around $10 million….I assume the Cardinals are going to have a young rotation, a vet may help but if they can get something decent I could see it
Donovan is projected around $6 million, can’t see trading him unlesss they get a pretty decent starting pitcher in return
Nootbar is projected around $5-5.5 million…not sure he is tradable with his surgery on his heels but I would trade him if he gets healthy
If they get rid or Arrenado, Gray and Nootbar for around those figures they would save around $38 million
Their current projected payroll with all those named-above on the team is around $135 million according to Sportrac for 2026
November 15, 2025 at 1:46 pm #295872According to Cot’s Arenado is owed $19.3M in 2026 and $15M in 2027. I think the Cards would have to pay $20M to move him.
Gray is is owed $35M in 2026 plus a $5M buyout. We would probably have to pay $15-$20M to move him.
Donovan is projected at 5.75M. He will have many suitors.
Noot is prohected at 5.5M. He will have some suitors but his injury and surgery may scare a few teams off.
According to Cots the Cardinal payroll for 2026 is at $116.5M. They could efinitely go under $100M unless they sign some players after making all of their trades.
November 15, 2025 at 4:51 pm #295879Donovan is definitely a keeper at a modest cost. Seems Gray would cost more to trade than to keep, getting little of value in return. Anybody else can go, but not at giveaway prices just to cut payroll.
November 20, 2025 at 6:58 pm #296160FYI here,
I am reading that the Reds are interested in Schwarber. If he goes to that homer friendly stadium he might give Bonds a run for his money.r/Esteemed Rat
December 3, 2025 at 3:21 pm #296927Aren’t the Winter Meetings this week?
December 3, 2025 at 3:49 pm #296928No, Rat. The Winter Meetings start next week in Orlando, Dec. 7-10, Sunday through Wednesday. They will be held at the Swan and Dolphin resort hotels which are ‘twin’ hotels that face each other right inside Walt Disney World. On the last day of the Meetings, Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Rule 5 draft will be held. For what it’s worth, the hotels are owned and managed by Marriott even though they are on Disney property.
December 3, 2025 at 8:17 pm #296941Ah the once tremendously amusing Winter Meetings. As a kid, it was right up there with Opening Day and the All Star game as far as excitement was concerned. Pre-ESPN, one had to either catch snipets of the latest sports news on the 10:20pm sports segment on your local news tv station, or in your morning newspaper. During baseball’s Winter Meetings, I couldn’t wait to rip open the paper’s sports section to read all of the baseball trades……which back then were usually plentiful. Unfortunately Winter Meetings these days hold about as much fan excitement as watching an episode of General Hospital.

ParticipantPugsley that was a hilarious comment but i have to agree with you.
December 4, 2025 at 5:30 pm #296985Yessir, winter meetings these days rank right up there with Rat’s southwestern Indiana weather reports (no offense intended R).
December 5, 2025 at 5:05 pm #297031I remember whitey Herzog’s blockbuster trade at the Winter Meetings in 1980. He traded
Garry Templeton, a switch hitting SS who batted 300+ his whole time in the minors and who demonstrated exciting speed and defense, Sixto Lezcano who had come to St. Louis as the centerpiece of another blockbuster trade, and Jose DeLeon who could be classified as no less than a #3 rotation starter, for Steve Miura who was a #3 or #4 rotation starter, Al Ohlmstead who was a decent left handed pitcher, and Ozzie Smith who was hitting .222 at a time when hitting .300 was the gold standard. I remember a reporter shoving the mic in Whitey’s face when he got off the plane back in St. Louis, and asking him about the trade to which Whitey replied, ‘I thought he was untouchable’. My thought at that time was, ‘ Are you crazy. We wanted you to make a good trade, not do something dumb like this’.December 5, 2025 at 5:13 pm #297034That deal was actually a year later, mud. We got both Smith’s, Ozzie and Lonnie after the 1981 season.
1980 was where Whitey “shuffled the Cards” with the big trade for Bruce Sutter and sent Ted Simmons to Milwaukee.
December 5, 2025 at 5:18 pm #297037I’m pretty sure Templeton was swapped for Smith during the ’81 offseason. The ’80 offseason saw Simmons, Vuchovich and Fingers go to the Brewers. David Green and Lezcano were the two primary players offered up by Milwaukee in that trade which also saw the arrival in StL. of Dave “If it would have been a cheeseburger, he’d have caught it” LaPoint…Haha!
December 5, 2025 at 5:19 pm #297038Haha…Leave it to my friend Bikemike to beat me to the bag…
December 5, 2025 at 5:35 pm #297040I stand corrected.
As a friendly reminder, the Cardinals with Whitey at the helm and Ozzie at SS, won the World Series in 1982.

ParticipantThat is a nice reminder mudville. One could argue that the cardinals would have won the 81 world series if the season had stayed one season instead of being broken into two seaaons. We will never know.
December 6, 2025 at 2:19 pm #297056I had almost forgotten about that. Thanks. It makes me smile to think that Whitey finally got in the HOF.
December 6, 2025 at 4:07 pm #297059I think ownership told Whitey to get rid of Templeton, and Whitey just did the best he could. It sure turned out good, but I bet the Rat had his fingers crossed.

And one could argue that the Birds woulda won the ’85 Series if not for Don Denkinger. And won the ’87 Series if not for the air current manipulations in the Metrodome, where the Twins of course won all four home games in the World Series. Link: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story?id=1585964
Not that I’m bitter.
December 6, 2025 at 8:04 pm #297064Thanks for spreading that pre-holiday bitterness. I feel it too. Lolich was pulling some lefty commy voodoo stuff for sure…just look at what the military was doing in 1968.
We should all aire more grievances so Bloom feels the pressure going into the meetings. He’ll perform better if he understands the magnitude of the conspiracies and forces at play.December 7, 2025 at 11:40 am #297078Also, Jack Clark missed the 1987 World Series with a severely sprained ankle.
December 7, 2025 at 4:59 pm #297101In ’85 the tarp monster ate rookie Vince Coleman.
December 7, 2025 at 9:49 pm #2971131982 willie
ParticipantWell i consider the 85 a world series championship for the cards in spirit. The 87 series, i figure the last game regardless of the park favored the cardinals and they didnt get it done. In reality the cardinals really dominated the 80s. Its a shame we had the 2 part season, the atrocious call at first, the coleman injury, and the clark injury which because of the twins stadium, we really missed his pop.
December 9, 2025 at 10:32 am #297181Edwin Díaz to Dodgers…. Imagine that! Haven’t found the # yet. Probably in the ballpark of 5/100?
