A quick reminder of what this thread is about.

If you have an idea for a trade or acquisition target for the Cardinals, this is the ideal place to discuss it. Same if you want to talk about a player in another organization or a free agent.

We start new individual threads when a major media source connects the Cardinals with a particular player. At times, the moderators will merge new threads into this one if they are deemed to best fit here based on the preceding criteria.

Since I am working today I will go first. Please do not extend Goldy.

Oliver, I think I would say please do not extend Goldy now.

At some point, say, as the deadline approaches, I would revisit the question. The two considerations would be: A) How is Goldy holding up, and B) How urgently does Walker need to be moved off right field.

If SEA wants full salary relief and a trade package, I’m out on Castillo. We won’t win that auction, and the roster has bigger needs to address before the budget is full.

No one says we couldn’t trade Matz to another team to free up payroll. It would just be a little extra work for Mo and crew.

If we are buyers at the deadline, and Goldy stays, a Q-offer decision needs to be made at seasons end.

If he climbs back in the MVP race, he would have the platform year for a sizeable multi-year deal, somewhere.

I’d be working with Seattle to figure out how to make a deal for Castillo. He would be a great addition to the rotation.

I happen to think he could climb back into the conversation for a NL MVP candidate. He had a more than decent season in ’23 and there’s been 11 MVP winners who won the award after turning 35. Stargell was 39 when he shared the NL MVP with Hernandez and Eckersley won an MVP along with a CYA at the age of 37. And who could forget Barry Bonds who won MVP awards at the ages of 36, 37, 38 and 39?…He must have had some sort of special access to the fabled fountain of youth. In any event, it wouldn’t surprise me too much if Goldschmidt puts a really nice season together before he unlaces and hangs ’em up.

From that last thread, have we ever had a current player wear gear from another team like Nootbaar did without ever even playing there like Arenado and Rockies or something? That’s pretty shady if the photo wasn’t photoshopped.

A guy on the MLB Network the other night said Goldschmidt might have five (5) more good years left in him. I’m not sure what he was smoking when he said it. I’d say we will be fortunate to get two.

And Dear Lord in Heaven – please, PLEASE do NOT ever put Walker at 1stbase!!!

If he meant 5 years like the one he had 2023 maybe. I rather not take the risk. Why do the Cardinals feel the need to extend players so close to the best used by date? But I know the odds of them extending Goldy are 100%.

I’d take 5 more years like he had in ’23 in a hot NY second. He crossed HP 89 times, pushed 80 runs across HP and tatered up 25 times last season. I also continue to feel that he’s the best hitter on the current roster. And if I were a baseball gypsy I’d say that if he’s slotted at #3 in the order for the majority of his PA’s, he’ll end the ’24 season with at least 100 RBI’s added to his career resume.

Hmm…When I think of the SF Giants, I ask myself the question…Does Posey get inducted into Cooperstown? And if so, what are the odds of him and Molina getting a plaque on the same day?

From what I have read they still might not be done. Hader may be on their radar as well. The proverbial dry powder is finally being used.

Hey, if there is some kind of recall on ex-Cardinals going on, Ottavino would help.

I think so too. I mentioned in the Bullpen thread that his is 2023 numbers were decent. Since he is 38 even the Cardinals might be able to afford him.

How about Burleson, Rom, and Thompson for Bryce Miller?
BTV has it at 25.9 for 25.9 but we might have to sweeten the offer more if they expect an overpay.

I think it’s interesting that neither Snell or Montgomery have signed yet…. I am guessing as this gets closer to spring training starting the # of years they sign for might possibly come down; like would one of them do a 4 or 5 year deal with an opt out after year 2.

Will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks with them, I kind of assumed The Rangers would resign Montgomery but it seems to be dragging on.

Yep ghost, ST is getting close and they aren’t signed. Neither is Bellinger.

Might be an interesting week ahead of us.

I still say Bellinger would look good in the #3 spot in our lineup. Right between Goldschmidt and Arenado..:)

Common thread among Bellinger, Snell and Monty?

All are Boras clients. Not a coincidence. (Matt Chapman, too.)

The question I have is whether Boras overestimated the market. It is getting late and its not clear which if any teams are desperate.

I think it would be a wise move by the Cardinals (or any other team) to sign Brandon Woodruff when teams can place players on the IL, so he would not take up a 40 man spot on the roster. Probably a two year contract since he won’t be available until somewhere around the All-Star break. Might supply some innings this year but would be ready for next spring for sure.

And what’s up with Kershaw anyway? Is it a given he returns to the Dodgers given that Buehler is not going to be ready Opening Day?
