Well if most of us agree there should be some kind of rebuild and we are just debating the kind of rebuild then that is a good place to start.
As I have said before I would keep most of the vets, make targeted trades out of areas of surplus and redundancies, and invest heavily in the farm system. I would not make any significant free agent signings this winter. Certainly nothing more than one year. It would basically be a rebuild through attrition that would at least allow the team to have a chance to do something in 2026 but be poised for true contention in 2028. And I do not view it being similar to what Mo was doing. He didn’t make targeted trades from surplus in the offseason and he didn’t attempt to rebuild the farm until it was too late.
The Cardinals appear to be doing this rebuild differently than what I would do. Yes they are investing in the farm but they seem determined to move as many vets as possible. They are not trying to win in 2026 and it is depressing.
And I don’t get too caught up in what they say or don’t say. A wise person on this board once said to look at what the Cardinals do instead of what they say.
I read an article that graded all trades so far. They gave the Red Sox a B for Gray and the Cardinals a D for Fitts and the other guy. He said Fitts had an eminently hitable fastball and the other guy had good stuff but couldn’t get it over the plate. Hope he’s wrong.
I do too, but he is probably not. This was about offing the contract as painlessly as possible. Anything coming back was coming straight out of Bill’s pocket.
