Despite being two games behind I do have one major concern. We have a west coast trip coming up and, despite the fact that we will be playing some sub .500 teams, my somewhat befuddled memory tells me that west coast teams have been having fun with the likes of the Brewers and Cubs. Course it was the Dodgers and Rockies that bashed the Cubs but still…….
How long can we stay two games back and continue to have an anemic offense? Ahh that is the question huh?
Thought the play of Edman and Ravelo was also darn good and both got hits.
Lowest time of the season: Bases loaded, 0 outs, could not score. What an offense.

Agree 100%. Bader seems to have a definite problem with pitch recognition as he seems prone to watching center cut pitches and guesses wrong on what else is coming. Lately he is the perfect example of the blind squirrel finding an acorn every now and then. Were it not for his defensive abilities he would be in AA. As it is, he is truly a #8 hitter.
Can you say P? P as in PATHETIC. Yes friends it was Pearl Harbor redux at Busch Stadium last night and, once again, the leader of the attack was a guy named Yamamoto. The best way to beat him is to buy him from the Marlins. Wouldn’t he look nice in the Cards SP – a young Chris Carpenter without the attitude.
I can picture Mo hitting Gyorko in the leg with a bat and then saying “Oh sorry Jed, you may need to stay on the IL a while longer so we can see what Ravelo offers. I am confident that Jed is on the trade block this year.
It appears that Cincy is the only NLC team to win last night and they beat the Astros for the second straight day. So another of our chances to pick up a game has passed by.
Goldy has always been my favorite this season but while Goldy is a great defensive first baseman he has yet to show what was expected of him – hits in critical situations. I still have hopes that he will get ‘hot’ the same as some other dreamers think MCarp will get ‘hot’.
Well we still have two more to go with the fish before arrival of the great God on Friday. To make him happy we are offering Wacha as our sacrifice to the God. Nuff said.
Remember what Yammamoto did to us at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941 and at Miami last week. No repeats please. The guys throws like Hendricks and the guys should just think of it as batting practice where you actually hit the ball.
Nice game overall but remember we were not exactly playing the Yankees or some powerhouse. That fish pitcher looks to have some good stuff and despite no offense from his team could be around for a while. Unusual to have a game with NO walks.
I don’t see any Cards making the All Star team on fan votes. Do the managers still get to pick a few or is that just the pitchers? For me the AS game and its selection process is a big joke. Pham hit it on the head and at least they took away the WS home team selection from the winner.
McLaughlin and MM Thompson (motormouth) are really pushing for a big AP reception this weekend. AP was a very good player who wasn’t traded but left of his own free will. In the long run the Cards benefited from that decision with more money and an extra pick and the Angels have seemingly gained nothing in the way of championships (nor have the Cards).
The way the Yankees populate the IL I doubt they will be getting rid of Frazier. He can actually play the field in addition to DH. It is starting to sound like the FO said, “We have some cash so lets go buy a bat.” I am not so sure the manager was in agreement but that’s the way things are. EE is a threat to Luke
Voit as he also plays 1B. No idea what ever happened to Bird but with 3 guys at 1B and rotating the DH plus add in Sanchez doing some DH and with Stanton and Judge coming back soon those Yanks have a real problem huh……….LOL10 game road trips can be wearing on a team but at least the Cards come home with a 5-5 record on this trip and should look forward to facing the mighty Marlins again.
Glad to see that Hudson did not get the win for Sundays game as the lad looked like he could not hit the broadside of a barn during his whole appearance. Double plays and poor swings by the Mets saved him. Hope he doesn’t take too much from his press clippings any more.
Still scratching my head to figger out how you win a game with 3 hits when the other team has 10. But when two of those three hits are home runs it tends to make more sense.
The great God (according to McLaughlin) returns Friday and they are pushing that series like it was something of a little World Series. Actually I recognize all that AP did for the Cards but he was never a one man team and his departure, in my mind, was tainted by some of the verbiage expressed by him and his wife. Then to top it off he also signed another 10 years personal services contract with the Angels meaning his next 20 years would be with that team. Eight years away have not tempered my thoughts of him.
Bob, great post on Dylan Carlson. Any rookie that leads his team in BA, Runs, RBI, HR and SBs is worthy of high praise. I am surprised that he is still at AA Springfield and have to admit that I have yet to see a Springfield game in person this year but have seen some on the local TV. Tornadoes invading one’s space tend to slow down our recreational activities.
I have expressed this before but it seems when we hit a homerun in the first inning bad things eventally happen and we lose. Well that happened again but the guys did try to fight off the bad things for sure but it is hard to overcome 5 run leads.
I always proclaim that I support any player wearing the birds on the bat. Sometimes though I have to think that maybe I am fibbing because I have never been a fan of Matt Carpenter. Perhaps because it is because of McLaughlins constant praise and telling us what a good eye he has but all I see is him watching strikes going by and then whining to the HPU about how he was robbed. Combined with his less than average defense in past seasons (improved this season) and terrible throwing arm I fail to see where he is the best guy for the position. But then that’s my view and I am sure others think he is the second coming. Then last season we had to go through that salsa baloney and I see that he now has a much less promoted breakfast crunch. Some days I have to eat my words about him but that is true about a lot of players. I just have to tell myself they are all big leaguers and can strike at any time (meaning they can make life hard for your team.)

But far from ‘greatest in baseball history. Plus this isn’t talking career, it is what are you doing for us this season and the answer is NOT MUCH. If it were not for the extension and that hot streak last season he would be on the bench. Yes, he has his moments but so do most players.
I think Pop may have made a major mistake sending Flaherty on that last play. But Pop probably had more reasons than I know of. Still – with Goldy waiting on deck………….oh well.
If you have to lose a game then this is the kind you would choose to lose. I saw a lot of ‘spunk’ in the team tonight and they almost managed to overcome Wacha’s horrible start.
When Goldsmith stayed in the game I was hoping they would take Carpenter out and leave Munoz at 3B. Carpenter is a joke this season. I almost soiled myself when McLaughlin said something to the effect “Carpenter is one of the best hitters in baseball history.” He based that on ONE grand slam.
Thor is none too swift to the plate and Ramos looked like he was throwing discus on those tosses. Glad to see the Cards take those many steals. As I said before I think the team is ready to do battle for the rest of the season.

Barrett I have always pictured as what a good umpire should look like but he has disappointed me on occasion. Danley has his ups and downs and most of the downs are at the plate. Jerry Meals needs to be nominated for the most boneheaded play of the century or was that Jim Joyce who took away a perfect game (or was it just a no hitter) and then admitted as much. Otherwise, I think Jim Joyce was one of the best around and he knew when to retire as opposed to others who seem to think they need the funeral benefits.
What umpire crew would you cringe at seeing if you were in the World Series. How about this one.

Just a quick comment on something that I have noticed. The little white outlined ‘strike box’ is not always very accurate. I have no idea how it is determined or by whom but what we were describing as high strikes in last nights game were probably more like good calls because the outline of the top of the box was often at the players belt line while they were in batting position. As I understand it the strike zone is determined when the batter is in their natural batting position – not when they squat to start a swing.
Along those lines take notice sometimes as to which area of the strike zone is most often called wrong. It is the bottom because, let’s face it, it has to be a guess as no HPU can get that low to judge it. I was an umpire a lot during my college days and I will admit that calling the low pitch a strike was frequently an educated guess. I fully support the incorporation of an electronic strike zone. Some oppose it as taking away the human element. That has already been done with the replay review system and it has improved the game by making calls more accurate. That’s my vent for today.
I was surprised that Shildt didn’t pull Ponce in the 2nd. It was obvious that the guy was tossing moon balls consistently. Even he admitted after the game that he couldn’t control his fast ball. Even tried throwing it in the dirt and it went high. But Shildt looked like a master by using JMart in that PH role. Good see JMart getting his stroke back. Good to see a lot of them doing the same but Goldy is really looking befuddled on some swings. But he hits the ball hard many times – right at the defender. However, Goldy at 1B has saved this team a lot of misery.
Almost forgot to credit Edman for doing a very nice job at 2B and hitting that double – his first MLB hit.
Winning four of five on the road ain’t bad. Now two more over the Mets and they can come home looking good. GO CARDS.
Gonzalez? You must mean Martinez and I agree that they should only platoon. Fowler does ok in CF but Bader is outstanding at that position.

Great play all around but how Kolten Wong ever got to 3B to take that toss from Carpenter was amazing but not given much notice.
It becomes ridiculous when the home team pushes to continue a game with rain pouring down because they think they have a win in the bag but then they discover that during the time the field is being ‘treated’ it also degrades to a minor swimming pool made only worse by dumping bags of diamond dry into pools of water. Kellogg should be suspended as an umpire and the Mets got what they deserved – tied instead of winning. The grounds crew really became the clown crew because of all the poor communication they were being given. A bad display of umpire discretion caused by hometown favoritism. Good job Cards and especially Kolten and Harry’s Son.
Seems as though the rookie pitcher jinx persists with the Cards. But this one was a bit on the embarrassing side with a 9-0 score. I give Yamamoto credit. He did to the Cards what his predecessor did to Pearl Harbor. The Blues win will take some heat off the Cards poor showing but they get a chance to see the fish again next week at home and, hopefully, they can sweep them there – no promises.
Hope Helsley is ok but it looks like he will need an IL stint. McCarver stole my exact words. I had just said that Helsley appears to be wild tonight and he heard me all the way from Missouri and repeated those words which were followed by the trainer shooting out of the dugout and Helsley’s removal.
I have already complained enough about the two motormouth Macs on FSMW so just ditto my last words on them.
Somebody suggested trading Wong. Huh? His defense is superb and his offense is passable and at times very good. So what do we get for this trade other than a cheaper sub.
Lots of good words on Munoz and I sort of like him too but check his error record from last season and he got bit by the leadoff batter syndrome the other night – 3 strikeouts plus another last night but not at leadoff. If anybody should be traded to reduce salaries, it should be Carpenter but that extension is a killer on doing that. Fowler is another one in that same boat – salary kills trades. Next week in the Marlins series would be a good time to see Lane Thomas and Tommy Edman start a game or two.

No need to get ones knickers twisted over something you can’t control.I can see some changes but Yadi is rested and Carpenter was off last night. Is the rookie right or left handed? Might make a difference in starters. DeJong had a day off recently but didn’t seem to make much difference. JMart finally got a hit last night and I hope he can get back to his .300 average soon. The fish are a weak team but those are the kind you have to beat if you hope to stay alive for the post-season.
I am starting to wonder about Wieters and how long he will last as Yadi’s backup. After seeing Knizner I think he would be good for backup duty next season.
Extend Ozuna. Trade ONeil. I am a believer in why let a known quantity go to free agency when his performance justifies an extension. 5 years/100 mil is your guess and I think it is on the high side for an outfielder. His arm is better and his defense is as good as ONeil’s. One mistake was extending Carpenter who has not lived up to expectations. Leadoff this year seems to have a black cloud over it. Yairo got a hit last night but he also struck out 3 times.
Yep, pitcher rookies are truly the Achilles heel for the team but I don’t think the fish have that good of a rookie crop. The fish do look truly bad – almost as bad as some posters have pictured the Cardinals. We play in the toughest division in baseball this season.
Wonder why this is another 6:10 game on a getaway day. Schedulers strike again but they probably figured that if the Fish only get 6k to a night game they might get only half that to a day game.
