WAR is the one I wish they would blow up. Totally unprovable bunch of numbers. Stat geeks pull it out of their rear by using one of their homemade formulas. One common number you hear is how a player has been batting against another team. For example Molina has been playing the Reds since 2004 or 2005. I doubt that the Reds have the same team they had in 2004 so the number is meaningless as it implies that this batter will consistently hit so much against another team which no longer has the same players. JMHO.

Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t believe Springfield has won a road game yet this season. Lost yesterday 1-0.

Pugs: “This game will be in the bag shortly….nice comeback win for our boys!”

A nice thought Pugs – good to be positive – bad they could not oblige.

Bad start for Waino but the most discouraging part was the hordes of runners left on 3B in a one run game. Like most teams today the Cards seem to be depending on the home run to catch up. Really disappointing to see that they could not tee off on the batting practice pitcher who started the game for the Mets. Another Sandy Koufax he was not. New game today – start by winning so the series is winnable.

“Yadi in 2023 might need a walker to get to 1st base.”

There are days when I think he needs one now. On double plays it is not good when, on the throw to 1B, Yadi is not even in the picture yet. But he does hustle at times when he thinks there is a chance. Whatever.

Yes they were in place, no doubt, but they were never publicized as they were then with direct statements to the press. I think Yadi will eventually be a manager but I am not sure it will be for the Cardinals because of timing.

There seems to be some misinformation about the backup catcher and when he plays. Late last season after Shildt’s takeover and Yadi’s return from injury it was stated pretty bluntly to the press by everyone from the owner to the manager that Yadi plays when Yadi wants to play and there is no discussion — and so it was. This season I suspect the same rules will apply but perhaps Shildt can be more convincing to Yadi that a days rest now and then makes for a good season. We shall see.

I know that early season stats are not very typical of an overall season but sometime you just can’t ignore them.
    Player 1 – BA-.262…HR-4…SB-1…OBP-.423…OPS-.948

    Player 2 – BA-.290…HR-8…SB-2…OBP-.343…OPS-.1.069

Which one is Marcel and which one is Harper. Surprising huh? A few million different in pay too.

I am finding it rather humorous that this whole thread is about a guy who is leading the team in several offensive categories at the moment. Paul Goldschmidt is my favorite but it must be embarrassing to see him strike out so many times in games. As for Ozuna’s defense, it could be better but he sort of reminds me of Matt Holliday in left field. As for the losses the Brewers have a good team and the Cardinals currently have rotation problems but those things can change as the season goes along. My objection is to the schedulers coming up with a schedule that makes teams face each other 10 times in a month. That begins to resemble spring training. Stretching out the 19 games that each team faces their division opponents makes it a more meaningful season for both teams in that they meet each other at varying times of each others strengths and weaknesses to include injuries and new players.
I have no idea what goes on the the team dressing room, the manager’s office, the owner and FO offices so I cannot tell with any degree of accuracy why something was done or not. I prefer to just watch the games and enjoy them for what they are. The what ifs and whys are beyond my pay grade but, like all forums, some tend to enjoy debating those things as if they are ‘in the know’ but, more accurately, as if they could do what they wanted without any knowledge of other factors affecting decisions. My sermon is now over. A day off is a bad thing for me. It means I have to find out something else to look forward to. Hope everyone enjoys it.

Had to be missed hit and run plays. Wieters is not a speed demon. On one of those Kolten would have needed a ladder to swing at a high and outside ball to do his part in the play.

gscottar – my sentiments on the schedule reprinted from my post on yesterdays game:

The schedule this year, not only for the Cardinals, is a farce if you study it. Playing the division champion 10 times in the first month of the season is ridiculous. Several two game series against division opponents doesn’t make sense either. The Pirates played the Tigers this series and unless they consider them arch rivals (like us and KC) I wonder why – the NLC is supposed to be playing the ALW this season for interleague games. Twenty games in June without a day off but two days off the next week because of a two game schedule with Oakland. Just a few of many examples of how the scheduling can kill a team. The Red Sox played 10 games on the road before getting a home opener. Weather may have an effect but they sure had a lot of losses in those 10 games. Anybody that believes the MLB schedule is made randomly by a computer may want to check and see if it was a Chinese hacked computer.

    And now back to baseball.

Well mama said there would be days like this. I admit to having questions about bringing in a rookie to face Yelich but other than the one he grooved he did a respectable job and has a ball to bring home for his first hit. It is a good thing we had Gallegos and Helsley up as the pen got saved a bit with their presence.

I am just an old complaining codger but I am still complaining about having to stream Fox Sports Go because the blues brothers made it to a playoff and their 9 fans want the prime channel. Speaking of that, it matters not but McLaughlin and Thompson drove me to the mute button many times again last night. They get on some stupid off game subject and just won’t let it go. Even a bird flying by got their tongues wagging for 5 minutes. Is there some Fox rule that says silence for 5 seconds is prohibited. I won’t even go into the Jackie Robinson multi inning tribute on Monday. I really got spoiled by listening to two Reds announcers on Sunday who knew how to broadcast a baseball game and stick on topic.

As for the game……meh…………When Flaherty started imploding I knew it was lost. The HPU did not cause the Cards to lose but with gambling now legalized in baseball you could easily see how just a wrong call here and there could put bucks in an HPUs pocket. Time for electronic pitch calling but the umpire union still has the upper hand evidently. That little white outlined box will sooner or later drive MLB to consider the electronic call system.

I could go on but I know some of you have to work and don’t care to read a book here.

I notice that the Brewers CF camera is lined up with the pitcher and catcher like the Fox Sports MW camera used to be. So what if the little box imposes in the pitchers head. As soon as the ball is delivered he moves to the side. Dead CF is the best camera position. Also, anybody notice that the strike box as depicted on the screen is not always very accurate for the top of the box. Several players have the top lined up with the players belt when in his batting position.

That 2010 20 inning game with the Mets – was it a position player on the mound? Maybe Aaron Miles but on the other hand I remember it being somebody like Skip Schumaker. Give us the answer please.

How about Hudson in the pen and Gant in the rotation.

Wow – Springfield has won 5 in a row. No losses at home yet and no wins on the road. Irving Lopez once again hit two homers his second being the deciding runs. Now if they could just keep all their games at home.

No need to hit on Shildt. You don’t load the bases with the Brewers lineup. I am sure he will walk him if the situation fits.

I know it was JR day but to have the two motormouths on FSMW constantly harping on it brought about the mute button. Guess I got spoiled Sunday with the Reds guys doing a great job and knowing more about the Cards than the Dan & Brad show.

Face it – the Brewers have a lineup that can kill you. Some of those hits were NOT mistakes but just good hitting.

Ozuna – Our former Gold Glove outfielder may not be the sharpest fielder in the box but he sure showed Hader where the bear did his business in the buckwheat. Last season JMart and ?? did the same back to back.

Glad to see Goldy getting back in the game and the Paul and Paul show is looking good. If Carp could start doing his part things would look up. Kulpa got his come uppance last night but the difference between him and Meals was obvious. The ever changing strike zone made for a lot of guessing.

A new day today and back to Fox Sports Go to see the game. Seems that the Cards fan base is many times larger than the Blues fan base but we are the ones who get pushed to the non-existent FS Plus (on my ISP) to give the Blues top billing.

Question of the day for St Louis residents. Last season most of the ads were for Bommarito car dealerships – seemed like he owned them all. This season it is Lou Fusz that seems to have taken over. Did they buy out Bommarito?

A good day to all. Go Cards.

Our top 4 in the lineup are striking out at a .254 rate (255 PAs – 65 SOs). Leading the pack is Goldy with a 29 percent strikeout percentage followed by Ozuna at .264 and DeJong and Carp at a 23.5 and 23% rate respectively. ONeil and Dex won’t make any good lists in this area either. Goldy got off to a good start but seems to have slowed down for a bit. Still I recognize him as the leader at the end of the season and I am not talking about strikeouts.

Nice to get a 4 run lead after 1/2 inning but even nicer to see the come back after the score tied. Everybody sure seemed happy with the weekend but the forecasted packed stadium did not materialize – less than 17K each game. Capacity was 22K. Boy that turf sure makes a difference in the game. Don’t recall Tampa and Toronto being that much different.
Don’t know about others but Fox Sports Plus only came through at my house on the Reds feed (Fox Sports Ohio) but I will say I really enjoyed it much more than the Dan & Brad show. The Reds guys seemed to know more about the Cards players than the Midwest guys and they were pretty even handed in passing out compliments and knocks – even to their own team. Best of all, they did not believe that every second of the broadcast needed to be covered with yakking. Lots of quiet time and no drifting off to players and times of 40 years ago. Even the FS Ohio ads seemed to be a lot different than those on Midwest. Heavy emphasis on medical stuff and charities and only one car dealer ad. No pizza or custard ads. I am one who usually records the game on TIVO and starts watching at least 45 minutes after the start in order to FF the commercials. Could not do that with the streaming – not hooked up to the TIVO.
On to a dome in the cold north again. Hoping for better results despite the poor scheduling where we play 7 games in their house before they ever come to ours.

“I’m not sure if anyone covered this, but did anyone else notice the Ford ad on the batting helmets? For the love of baby Jesus please don’t tell me this is going to be a thing!”

Noticed it? Heck I was getting read to run down to my Ford dealer and buy one of those turkeys. Manfred must have sold out to Ford in Meh-e-oco. And here the President is trying to get them to come back to the US.
A lot of pre-game hype on what to expect for crowds and boisterousness in the stands. Hype is what it turned out to be. Some of the pre-game shots of the area showed something that looked like either heavy smog or a very dirty camera lens.
Sorry to see the Cards take a loss but I don’t blame either ONeil or Bader for those misses. Doubt many other OFs would have gotten them. But the 1-12 RISP is a sad stat. Waino has sure put the shutdown on his many pre-season detractors but the 3rd time around on the lineup may have been the time to take him out. See how that hindsight works?….LOL

How about this for an idea. Start Gallegos today to make him proud in front of his countrymen. Then either in the 2nd or 3rd inning (depending on his performance) put Miles in. In that way Miles won’t have to go 5 innings to get a win should that be the case.

Wonder if any Springfield fans who have been to one of the first two games can give a report on the parking lot situation – mainly has it been heavily used or are there lots of open spaces. This may indicate how the fans are accepting the gouging prices put in place this season. I watched the opener on TV and while there was a good initial crowd it thinned out fast after about the 6th inning. I guess the dropping temps contributed to that as well as it being a school night. From what I read here and see on TV, Springfield is definitely in need of pitching. Would love to see Nolan Gorman advanced to AA early this season.

I see that Luke Gregerson has been sent to Springfield for a rehab assignment. If he pitches tonight he may be facing some weather problems.

Wacha was allowing one home run per inning. I guess Wieters was calling for that center cut meat huh? Actually Freese tagged him on a inside pitch. The wind did some favors to those balls hit to right field also.

Northwest Arkansas (AA-KC) has a SS named Featherson who was drafted in 2011, is 30 years old and has had quite a bit of MLB experience with different teams. It showed in his batting with a long HR and some good swats at the ball. Must be a come down to be back in AA and still trying to get back to the show.

I actually got to see the home opener for the Springfield Cardinals and didn’t have to use that crummy $14 parking lot. Plus I had the best seat in the joint – my recliner. I didn’t know the game would be broadcast locally on TV. Very enjoyable to get familiar with the Springbirds for this season. Most impressed with Kramer Robertson, Dylan Carlson and a Montero who played 3B. Robertson has a good story. His mom is the head coach of the Baylor national champions womens basketball team. He and Carlson both hit homers off Kershaw a couple of nights ago and he looks like a very good shortstop. It was a pretty good back and forth game and, typical of the minors, a lot of action on scoring with the game being a walkoff in the bottom of the 9th. I have to admit that it became bedtime for bonzo after the 8th and I had the TIVO set to see the ending this am BUT it turned out my TIVO setting abilities were not accurate enough and the darn thing (the TIVO) shut down about the time of the walkoff….LOL
