This is what I call a ‘bench game’ being as the entire bench started the game. I gave them about a 10 percent chance of a win. That will teach me. Schildt figured out a way to get 4 guys two days rest before having to drink Mexican water. Very good game and the fact that the Cards kept coming back made me a believer. They did that several times last season but not with the whole bench in the game. Hopefully Yadi will see fit to give Wieters a few starts now. The guy is a pro.
Thanks. I should have looked first. I see that Carp, Dex and Yadi are getting a rest day. Probably a good time for that.
Where in the world is Jed Gyorko? He has been active for 6 games so far and made two pinch hit appearances. Could he possibly still be ailing with the leg? I think Shildt is a bit hesitant at the moment to disturb his infield until somebody shows signs of being tired. Carp, DeJong, Wong and Goldy seem to be holding down the fort quite well. Maybe Jed will get some time in Monterrey. But I think that Munoz will also be south of the border so we may see a couple of fill in players this weekend. In the meantime, Yadi will determine when Yadi sits (according to DeWitt/Mo/Girsch/Shildt in Sept 2018)
First I will admit I am NOT a Matt Carpenter fan. But I will also admit he has his moments. Most of his moments come on offense but other than throws that look like they are designed to clear the arch his defense has improved to at least average. I don’t think Matt has done anything to make me think less of him. Rather it is the announcers who seem to fawn over everything he does and go crickets on his less than stellar points. Prominent among the fawning is how great his eye is – yet he is prone to argue with the HPUs on nearly every strikeout. Matty – is the the HPUs opinion that counts so do what all players have to do – adapt. I do agree with the poster who wonders if Matt’s 3B position will not be blocking several up and comers we have in the minors (ie – Gorman). In any case what’s done is done and the FO guys are a lot higher pay grade than me so I just sit back and enjoy the game (and keep Mr McCarver muted – ahhhh so nice and quiet).
Ozuna was not the only one who thought that ball was going out. Dave Roberts said he also thought it was going the distance. No doubt he overplayed the distance but nobody is perfect and had he not done the wall climbing show it would have just been scored as a fielding error (was it anyway?). I admit that when Marcel comes up to bat I don’t get a lot of confidence but he does have his surprises. One of the more interesting observations this season will be to see if he gets an extension. Based on his play to date (so early in the season) I will say that any extension will depend on the showing of the muscle man or maybe JMart. But there could also be enough talent in the minors (read Dylan Carlson) to hold off on an extension until the season is over. It will be interesting to see what Ozuna could bring as a free agent.
Really enjoying this series as I was one of the doubters when the hot shots from LA came into town. Refresh my memory please. Did we not sweep LA in Chavez Ravine either last year or the year before. I know they did us in at Busch last year.
Very happy to have found TCN and appreciate people actually responding to my comments on the parking situation in Springfield. I posted on the minor league thread but there is an update of sorts on that topic. Link at: https://tinyurl.com/yxwepm8cSpringfield Cards parking situation update. Click on the link for a lengthy statement.

It appears that the situation is still fluid but I don’t see the fans winning.Speaking of Grichuk I watched part of the Blue Jays/Red Sox game and old Grich looks the same at the plate. He is like the blind squirrel finding an acorn but not much difference since he left the Cards. However, his defense is still very good and his $5 mil contract has him smiling. The announcers could not believe it.
I really want to see Dylan Carlson and Nolan Gorman (if he is moved to AA) this season but I think I may have to hurry to see Carlson as he is standing out already. Most impressive is two AA birds hitting home runs off Kershaw. They are acting just like Matt Adams………LOL
I will find a way to get to Hammonds field early this season but it looks like the Springfield weather is going to be nasty tomorrow for their home opening. Another ‘weather bomb’ moving across the country. I wonder if the city bus passes by the field. May be worth checking into. Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
While I am of the opinion that Cardinal Nation far outnumbers Blues hockey fans I just cannot understand why bump the Cards off Midwest and on to Midwest Plus (which I don’t have). From Brian’s post it appears that Plus is available in quite a few areas that would be of interest to Blues fans. I qill watch the game on Fox Sports Go but I haven’t yet figured out how to get the streaming to fill my 46″ screen. But it is big enough to be enjoyable. Guess I just have to have something to whine about – learned that on other Cards boards…….LOL
One question – Why is Ozuna seemingly cemented into the #4 cleanup position? I would like to hear Mike’s thinking on that.
Brian in the article in this mornings news the team suggested Uber or Lyft or CarGo but it seems that would just up the price and entail a wait but I am not familiar with those services. My wife who is 75 years old could drop me off but she also has walking problems for any great distance so we need to look for another answer I guess. The stadium is built on an old quarry and there was quite a bit of room left at one end after the stadium was built and I always assumed it would be made into parking. Instead there is just a small park there. The company that owns the lot with the $20 price also owns the nearby multi-level parking garage – same story there -$20 for game parking. I would love to see a boycott of those lots until the price is brought back to something reasonable. The article says the price went from $5 to $10 last season (I didn’t make a game) but I remember it being $7 for the 2017 games I went to. Think we will go downtown and scout out some possible parking alternatives. Otherwise, maybe we could get one of our young neighbor couples to join us —- and let them drive…….lol.
Don’t know if it has been mentioned but it was announced yesterday that parking in Springfield at the lot across the street from the stadium has been increased from $10 to $20 effective immediately just in time for opening game of the season. Cards do not own the lot or have any control and negotiations have gone nowhere. This is the lot I have always parked in because I tote and oxygen tank and can’t walk too far and will not pay $20 to park my car at a minor league game. Soooooooooo?
So if CMart is activated, who goes down? Who has options? Brebbia, Mayers, Leone???
Oh I wasn’t on this forum but I was on the MLB game thread forums and they got really bloody over the fire vs not fire issue as well as the pitching coach and other positions. Several friendships were dissolved as a result and I was not really disappointed when MLB took their comment boards to FB and Twitter. Never missed the hate and discontent.
Spot on forsch31. I have departed several forums when the theme got to be – Kill Mo – or something similar. Couch coaches irritate me to no end when they act like couch potatoes. They never seem to realize that they are using hindsight to mark themselves as experts. Such as it is on baseball forums I guess. Even the PD columns have more than their fair share of Fire the FO commenters. They have no clue what they would get – just move out what they don’t like.
Cardinal in France: “Jeez Waino gets in a jam and we have to listen to a whole inning of chit-chat about hockey.”
Oh how you echo my sentiments. I loved hockey when we lived in North Dakota. Still watch the college game but Blues are not in my list of ‘must watch’. Ticked me off that they have 3rd inning interviews to the detriment of what is happening in the game – no mention until much later of Yadi’s bad throw and how the runner got to 3rd. When these FSMW guys get on a off topic subject they never let it die. Now we have 4 days of it coming up with Motormouth McCarver in the booth. He has taught me how to maintain my sanity by watching muted ballgames. GO CARDS.I’m the new guy on TCN but boy am I happy to see so much coverage of the minor leagues. I live in a Springfield suburb and you would not believe the amount of non-coverage here. Didn’t make it to a game last year because of medical issues but I would like to try to make a couple this season. Minor league games are the best and most affordable for a lot of us. Years ago I went to a St Paul Saints game in Minnesota and boy was I shocked at how much entertainment they offered in addition to the game itself. This is what makes the minor leagues go – bang for the buck and the chance to see some up and comers. Thanks Brian and others for the minor league info.
I wondered about double switching Ozuna out too but then I realized that normally the last out is the guy switched out. It meant Ozuna was the goner but if you wanted to keep him than Goldy was next up and Carp after him. The purpose is to move the pitcher down in the batting order so I guess Ozuna was the better bet.
Miller – Somebody please tell me this is not Brett Cecil reincarnated – only worse.
When Shildt elected to bat Wacha with the bases loaded and two outs I flinched but then realized that he was thinking there was a lot of game left and it was looking like the pen was going to have to take on a lot of that. Still – I flinched at the thought of the pitcher batting with the bases loaded. Oh well.
Small yard grass needed cutting badly and rain was about a mile away so I skipped out to do a 10 minute quick job. It didn’t take that long for Miller – who entered as I left – to do a quick job – on his own team. I have always been very happy about getting Goldy but never thought much of the Miller deal. For me the guy has been on the downhill slide. He looked great against the Cubbies in the series but no more.
Still perplexed about MLB game schedule. We play Brewers 10 times before the end of April; two game series for no particular reason with the Pirates and Reds; Boston has played 10 games and NONE at home yet. Weird. I think the MLB scheduling computer has been hacked by the Chinese.
April 6, 2019 at 7:19 am in reply to: StL 2019 Game 7 thread: Fri 4/5 vs. Padres (Home Opener rescheduled) #86089I will agree that ONeil’s swing on that strike 3 shows that he had his mind made up that he was going to swing regardless. Worse pitch of the game resulted in a strike 3. Go figure.
If you see any weird posts from me you will know that an old codger is trying to use some of those codes in a post. Thanks Brian.
April 6, 2019 at 7:13 am in reply to: Former Cardinals in the News – 2017 to Aug. 2024 (closed) #86086Daniel Descalso playing 2b hit a bomb and got a bunch of rbi’s in the Cubbies 13-10 loss last night.
Thanks forsch31.
April 5, 2019 at 6:45 pm in reply to: StL 2019 Game 7 thread: Fri 4/5 vs. Padres (Home Opener rescheduled) #86060Reyes really looked pretty good until the HPU hosed him a couple of times. Actually Machado got on base at least twice on strikes called balls. Pretty small strike zone with some exceptions. I have not yet seen an umpire that can consistently call a low pitch as a ball or strike. Another reason for electronic calling of pitches.
Really frosted that Fox Sport Midwest is bumping the Cards to the FS Plus tomorrow when the sked shows it to be on the main FSM station. The Blues don’t have half the audience of the Cardinals so why give them the prime spot especially on game #2 at home. I don’t have FS Plus but the wife says she just found it is also going to be on Fox Sports Go. That may work for us but not as good as the main channel. I’ll bet McCarver is in the booth for the next two games so it won’t matter to much to me as the mute button will be depressed for the entire game.
April 5, 2019 at 1:07 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2019-2020 #85972I have to admit 14NyquisT that I don’t have a clue what those charts are trying to tell me. When I saw Hot Dog Contreras, Posey and Realmuto ranked above Yadi I decided that I was being severely misinformed. If you haven’t guessed by now, stats are not my strong suit and sabremetrics are the devil’s revenge in my view. Otherwise I love baseball for it’s entertainment value and try not to get too wrapped up in wins and losses and the reasons the scribblers assign to them.
