f they are going to go with only internals their payroll will be abnormally low. I would look for an outside acquisition or two.
I think payroll is going to be lowered because they have to forecast based on the pandemic and vaccination rates. If they stick to basing payroll on attendance, it will be lower.
The only outside acquisitions I see them doing are pitchers. One starting pitcher, 1-2 relievers.
If Gorman’s not ready to start the season, they will start with Edman at 2B and probably Robertson on the bench. When Gorman is ready, Robertson will likely get optioned.
But surely Baker, Gorman, Burleson, and even Yepez could fill that role at least part of the time.
Baker has a .308 OBP in AA. I wouldn’t be penciling him in for the big leagues any time soon.

August 1, 2021 at 5:22 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #168562So middle infield, a DH, a SP or two and a bullpen piece or two would be where that money should go.
Our 2B next year will likely be Gorman. We will have four shortstops on the roster (DeJong, Sosa, Edman & Robertson). Our DH will probably be Yepez, and otherwise will be used to get people like Knizner and Williams (assuming he makes it out of camp with the Cardinals) some at bats.
Position-wise, it seems the only thing unsettled is our fourth outfielder.
Pitching-wise, we need to replace Wainwright, Kim and Carlos Martinez in the starting pitcher depth. And who knows if Mikolas will pitch. I do expect Wainwright to sign another year. Kim may do so as well, but right now, they are free agents.
Relief pitching – I would rather see them pick up somebody like Tony Watson in the offseason at a low price than do waiver claims during the year or trade for him at the deadline. LOL
On the VEB game thread yesterday, they reached out to Jeff Jones and he reached out to the Cardinals. The response he got was Williams has a “hamstring issue.”
No reason was given as to why he has not been placed on the IL.
Bader is a career 3.7 WAR/600 player. That is decidedly above average.
And the only reason he cooled off last year was Shildt benched him for two weeks in favor of a player who had an OPS .500 points less than Bader’s at the time he was benched. That will screw with anybody.
July 27, 2021 at 9:18 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 101 thread – Tuesday, July 27 at Indians #168038I don’t think anyone would have picked Bader as our best hitter for any month.
Last August, he had a .925 OPS, but then was benched for two weeks.
July 27, 2021 at 8:45 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 101 thread – Tuesday, July 27 at Indians #167997Bader is on fire. Shildt may wanna think about moving him up in the line up.
Yes, Bader is on fire. This is the point in the season where Shildt looks for an outfielder with a .400 OPS so he can bench Bader for two weeks and cool him off.
July 26, 2021 at 1:09 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 100 thread – Sunday, July 25 at Reds #167857About time to see a stat that actually has some true value, meaning, and gives an accurate picture.
Yes!!! Because we all know singles are infinitely more valuable than walks, even though they both result in a player on first base with no out recorded.
We also know that singles are just as valuable as homeruns, even though homeruns result in the player scoring.
You win by hits!!! Not runs scored!!!
Yes, I used MLB Draft tracker, which had them rounded. Also transposed the 5 & 7 in Holgate’s bonus amount. The $55k is correct.
July 25, 2021 at 1:46 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 100 thread – Sunday, July 25 at Reds #167774Hey I thought the Cards were playing today. Who are these guys mashing long balls all over the place?
Is your lucky charm watching the game with you today?
July 25, 2021 at 1:32 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 100 thread – Sunday, July 25 at Reds #167770All three outfielders with a homerun in the same game?
Aren’t they are weakness? Guess they didn’t get the memo.
Actually, I forgot to figure in the overages in rounds 11 & 12. I used a spreadsheet this time.
This does mean Graceffo received $300k instead of $500k. Using $300k for Graceffo, and figuring in the overages means the Cardinals have $74,565 in room to sign Cabell and/or Casserilla, in addition to their $125k slot allotments
Round Slot Value Actual
1 $3,480,000… $2,750,000
2 $1,340,000… $2,250,000
CBB $906,800… $875,000
3 $675,600… $600,000
4 $478,300… $375,000
5 $353,700… $300,000
6 $270,300… $50,000
7 $211,500… $1,000,000
8 $171,200… $20,000
9 $153,300… $75,000
10 $144,600… $50,000
11 … $50,000
12 … $125,000
SubTotal $8,185,300… $8,345,000
5% overage $409,265
Total $8,594,565… $8,520,000… $74,565I came up with $30,665 left
St. Louis gave Willis a signing bonus of $788,500, according to MLB Pipeline. That is well over a half million more than his pick’s slot value of $211,500.
Brian, your article misstates how much Willis was given. According to MLB Pipeline, he was given a $1 million bonus, for a difference of $788,500.
July 24, 2021 at 6:53 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 99 thread – Saturday, July 24 at Reds #167629Din-din this way was had at Friday’s restaurant in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin……home of your champion Milwaukee Bucks.
Pugs, I looked it up. Madison is 80 miles from Milwaukee, with not much in between. I don’t know that I would call Madison the home of the MILWAUKEE Bucks.
July 22, 2021 at 9:56 am in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 96 thread – Wednesday, July 21 vs. Cubs #167418Goldy now has a 16 game hitting streak. Only 40 more to catch DiMaggio.
And he has an OPS less than Bader. And Bader can’t hit according to most posters on this site.
I think for insurance, it has to be career ending (at least contract ending), and he has to be on the 40 man.

Pugs, you won a dinner tonight.
July 21, 2021 at 9:56 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 96 thread – Wednesday, July 21 vs. Cubs #167324We better not trade Bader by the deadline. He’s suddenly become a keeper.
He’s a career 3.7 WAR/600. It’s not sudden.

They usually do.

The umpires’ have not.
July 20, 2021 at 11:28 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 95 thread – Tuesday, July 20 vs. Cubs #167194Pugs, the Cardinals have nothing to sell.
The only person on an expiring contract worth anything is Kim, and they said he might just go back to Korea if traded.
