The guy with the highest OBP is the guy that is getting squeezed for playing time. Donovan still has a .397 OBP.
But as for why Edman has dropped in the order – the last 28 days he is sporting a .273 OBP. That’s not getting it done.
August 14, 2022 at 2:19 pm in reply to: 2022 Cardinals MLB Game 114 thread – Sunday, August 14 vs. Brewers #195498@CIF – They are trying to find a leadoff hitter who can get on base at a decent clip
I think there is at least a good chance he opts out and chases money – because he can control whether he goes to a contender. As Brian said, he could opt to join the Dodgers.
Evan Longoria’s contract is up after this year, so the Giants are also a possibility.
At a minimum, I would think Arrenado would have the Cardinals undo those deferred payments, which only pay 2% interest.

47,000 people trying to leave at once will always be a nightmare.
The reason they check you going in is so you don’t have a weapon on the way out…
Just let it go.
Having played 3B, Walker’s arm shoud be strong. Accuracy might be another thing.
August 3, 2022 at 8:39 am in reply to: 2022 Cards MLB Gm 104 thread – Wed, Aug 3 vs. Cubs – Resch to Thu afternoon #193817Phillies also have 11 games remaining against the Nationals, who just traded away their two best offensive players.
He didn’t act like a hard nosed St. Louis Cardinal baseball player.
Strangely, his primary value to the Cardinals was on defense, and his career hitting line is right in line with Edman’s.
I think they moved Bader because he has plantar fasciitis, which is a chronic condition.
I guess this means Burleson is getting promoted!
And please, please release McFarland!!!
I don’t know why I keep hoping McFarland will be gone. I’m sure they will just option out Thompson.
LOL
Walker has not played another position other than 3B.
The smart thing for the team in his development is to continue to play him at the hardest position until it is proven that he is not needed there.
I don’t know how he “looks” at 3rd, but he has committed 18 errors and has a .905 fielding % this year.
At AAA, they probably need to transition him to the outfield.

July 30, 2022 at 10:13 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #192994And if you are going to go for a WS, might as well trade for Syndegaard as well. His value isn’t especially high due to his $21 million salary and him becoming a free agent at the end of the year. Maybe Thompson + Woodford (free Jake!) for Syndegaard?
July 30, 2022 at 10:11 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2021-2023 #192992The Cardinals have a clear need for starting pitching right now, and that need is best addressed by dealing with the Angels.
I would prefer Ohtani to Soto (Ohtani can pitch!!!), and believe your biggest upgrades come from dealing with your weakest points first.
So, with that in mind, I ran a trade for Ohtani through the simulator, and it shows his value is 107.6.
What could the Cardinals trade to the Angels for Ohtani? Gorman, Liberatore Burleson & Yepez have a combined trade value of 105.9.
Ohtani gets to play for a winner, we would have a possiblity of getting Ohtani, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Pujols, Molina & Wainwright one ring together. Maybe a WS would be enough to convince Ohtani to resign with the Cards?
Last year he was a 21-year-old and this year he is a 23-year-old? Something funny about that math.
Both Soto & Carlson are 23. By bWAR, Carlson has 1.3 this year and Soto has 3.4.
As for who can play CF if they trade Carlson? Looks like next man up is Deluzio. Though I would think Nootbar would get a run at CF first. If I recall, O’Neil played CF in the minors. And I believe Capel is capable of playing there as well.
That said, I do not think the Cardinals will trade for Soto.
I ran Carlson, Gorman & Liberatore through the trade simulator, and it came up with a value of 156.8 vs Soto at 176.8. It suggested that was a slight overpay by Washington.
Added McGreevy, and the value going to Washington went up to 168.0, which it accepted as a fair trade. That would be the Cardinals giving up four former first rounders, three of whom were/are Top 100’s.
But it would preserve a pipeline of Walker, Winn, Burleson & Graceffo.
This was a bad year for college pitching, it was a terrible year for college hitting.
So, rather than go after upside, the Cardinals went after college players.
Initial reaction is this draft feels like the 2017 draft.
Sounds just like a way screwing people out of money they deserve.
They came up with this system, in part, to keep teams like the Yankees and Dodgers from telling kids they’ll draft them and give them $15 million. Then the kids tell small market teams they want $15 million.
But, yes, the draft pooling did decrease what teams were spending on the draft.
It’s $125k for rounds 11-20. I believe it’s $20k for undrafted free agents.
So, yes, there is incentive to go underslot in rounds 1-10, then overslot in rounds 11-20.
For instance, if you sign a guy for $400,000 in round 10, he counts $400k against your bounus pool. But, if you sign him in round 11, he only counts $275,000 against your bonus pool.
So, take the overslot guys in rounds 11-20 (if they are still on the board).
I think it would be much lower, because you don’t know how the draft is going to break.
Do they discuss what it would take to actually sign? Yes. That have to…But can you reach a handshake agreement that you are going to draft player X and he is going to sign for a certain amoount? Very difficult.
Now, it’s rumored the Reds had such an agreement in place with the player they drafted last night, and I am assuming Brock Porter will be drafted by the Rangers today with the $2.3 million in space they have available from the Kumar Rocker deal, but I think in terms of actual handshake agreements, it is very limited.
Hjerpe was one of the best pitchers in college this year, don’t think he is going too far underslot, if at all.
This last pitcher may be underslot.
I would’ve gone with a RHP there
