If there was ever a year for the Cardinals to tank, this is it…

No fans in the stands. All the double headers give them cover. Ability to draft Kumar Rocker.

What happens if they don’t sign Walker? Is it like past years where they will get a compensatory pick in 2021. However, I thought that rule had changed.

This might ease your concerns a little bit

for those, mostly high schoolers, who have a dollar figure in mind, below which they will not sign……
WHEN DOES THE DRAFTING CLUB FIND OUT THAT DOLLAR FIGURE IS?

    – I don’t think you ever truly know until you get into the negotiations. But that is the one thing clubs are allowed to do this year is contact eligible draftees and find out what it would take to sign them. So, they should have a pretty strong indication of what it will take, this year more than most years.

Cavelli is ranked #13 by MLB.com.
Why would he fall to #21?

Players fall all the time. Why did Gorman fall to the Cardinals? Why did Hudson?

I know this shouldn’t factor in, but we already have Perez, Gil, etc. Those are longer term guys. Why not get a seasoned and proven college player?

Because neither of those guys are very promising, and you (are supposed to) draft the best player available early on…

If you look at what the Cardinals typically do in the first round, they draft somebody ranked fairly high that “falls” to them. Think Plummer, Perez, Gorman, etc. Hudson was ranked just outside the Top 10 when he was drafted, and Thompson was ranked about 17 IIRC.

Didn’t the Toronto Blue Jays double the pay of their minor leaguers last year?

And Oakland is giving them furloughs?

Where do you think those undrafted kids are going to sign for $20k?

I compared Wilcox and Mlodzinski’s stat’s because of comments like this:

I have seen Cole Wilcox pitch in person and he throws with a lot of velocity but his control is sometimes off.

I’m not sure two walks in 23 innings shows a lack of control.

    and

between CM and Wilcox IMO CM is the more polished pitcher.

You stated in another post you know somebody at South Carolina. There might be some bias in your opinion.

    Let’s see:

    Wilcox: 1.57 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 32K, 2 BB
    Mlodzinski: 2.84 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 22k, 8 BB

Well, what the Cardinals need are middle infielders…

Of the four listed, I would go with Cole Wilcox…

I firmly believe MLB WANTS to draft fewer high schoolers. They want colleges to do more of the player development for them as occurs in other sports.

I hadn’t thought of that, but it makes total sense.

    Yes, that is correct.

I don’t know why it would impact college juniors. Think about it – many colleges are operating online now. You can accept the $100k and continue to work on your degree remotely. You make more taking the $100k than going back to school.

High school seniors – I would expect a huge reduction in the amount of high school players taken this year.

I don’t think it impacts the Cardinals at all. They presumably always get a feel for how signable a player is before they draft him, and that is one of the few things teams are allowed to do right now. Perhaps they lean more towards college players than HS players due to signability – but this is a good year for college pitchers, and as the saying goes, you can never have enough pitchers…

I sure hope they can find some talented middle infielders in this draft.

This does not appear to be a good year for short stops

    What happened to Evan Mendoza?

I see that everyone has given up on Delvin Perez too.

Not given up, but definitely have lowered expectations

They usually look at Metro size and TV market size (the bulk of revenues are now from TV contracts).

In which case, the two choices would be 1) Montreal & 2) Charlotte
    Television Market Sizes

Portland would be a rather distant third, because there is more population within 150 miles of Charlotte than there is within 150 miles of Portland. That said, professional franchises in Portland do tend to draw well.

Another thing that will have to be worked out is players who have performance bonuses in their contracts or have vesting options based on plate appearances or innings pitched. Adam Wainwright and Andrew Miller come to mind.

Pretty sure those will fall under force majeure

Wong and Miller return … $3M increase YOY

Wong’s option is for $2 million more than this year. If Miller performs like last year, he will not be returning at all.

And Yadi should sign for at least $10 million less than he is currently making, and Miller will come off the books as well.

I mean, if I were Mozeliak, I’d call Bloom and say we’ll meet your asking price, but we are excluding our Top 3 prospects (Carlson, Gorman, Liberatore) from consideration and you have to take back the contracts of Fowler and Carpenter…

Then call Colorado and say we’ll trade Hudson + O’Neill + mid-tier pitching prospect for Arenado…

and Hand hasn’t even been rumored.

Most Cardinals trades aren’t rumored before they happen.

I think next on the priority list for the Cardinals is finding a trade partner for Dexter Fowler (hello, Arizona).
