So, to summarize, what we have seen so far about Thomas is:
– not a scouting report (well, I did share a scouting report, but it directly refutes was was asserted, so it was conveniently ignored)
– not a link
– not a quote from the manager
– not a reflection of Thomas’ potential
– not a reflection of the current OF situationI did indeed quote Shildt. Go back and check. Is this your scrimmage now? I thought Forsch and I were conversing. Didn’t know the neutral moderator would jump in.
bccran, as I already pointed out, this is a public forum, where anyone is free to converse about Cardinals baseball. Why you think you get to decide who replies to your posts is nothing short of baffling.
As you say, the team decided to give O’Neill, Thomas, and Bader a full year to see what they could do with full playing time. When is the last time the Cardinals didn’t have a true veteran high producer anchoring the OF?
I don’t know but in order to bring Ozuna back DeWitt was going to have to allow the payroll to go to between $180M-$190M. He was NEVER going to do that. There is more to putting together a team than just picking and choosing the best 26 guys you can think of. Payroll has to be considered.

3 1/2 years ago. To open 2017, the starting OF was Fowler, Grichuk and Piscotty. The latter two were young players and of course, we know Fowler’s background.

But when two posters are having a discussion about something it’s really not right that you jump in, take sides, gang up, and try to slam one poster to the mat. In 2017 Fowler was coming off a very strong season for a World Champion team.
He was the expected veteran anchor between 2 youngsters.And yet Fowler is STILL with the team. If you consider him the veteran anchor then, why isn’t he the veteran anchor now?

In his entire career, Fowler has never:
Hit more than 19 home runs in a season.
Driven in more than 67 runs in a season.(Interestingly, both of these career high water marks were set just last season, long after 2017. Based on his terrible 2018, many had/have given up on him.)
Fowler is a table-setter, never a “true veteran high producer anchoring the OF”. However, he was the most experienced OF in 2017, as he is in 2020.
Now, it would be fair to point out that the 2017 team missed the playoffs. There were many reasons why, but Fowler wasn’t one of them. He had a typical Fowler season his first year with the team.
bccran, I tried to read the article on roto wire. However, I didn’t see an article by Hochman. I did see articles by BenFred that resembles what you said but there is no quote from Schildt. I also saw an article by Anne Rogers that said Thomas is expected to open summer camp as a contender for the starting left field job. There is another one referenced that says Thomas is highly regarded by Willie McGee and Bernard Gilkey.
If Thomas is a 4th OFer based on not starting at the beginning of the season, Carlson is a minor leaguer.
At the start of the season, the starters were Fowler, Bader, and O’Neill.
Thomas had failed to beat out Bader or O’Neill in Jupiter or summer camp.
Carlson was assigned to AAA to get more experience at that level.Carlson failed to beat them out also. If he was good enough, he would have opened the season as a starter.
But where is this article that has a quote from Schildt?
I don’t believe it was in the Cardinals plans for several reasons to start Carlson in St. Louis this season, Forsch31. I’ll see if I can find the rotor article again.

I have read this statement many times. I have always felt you are saying that the experts are saying Thomas is probably a nice #4.
However, after reading what else you have said, I am wondering if there are no experts saying that. Just experts talking about Carlson’s All Star potential. The only “expert” is Schildt talking about where the OF stacks up going into the season.
That has nothing to do with Thomas’ potential or scouting report.
I’ll bow out, Forsch. I gave you Shildt’s comments and have read scouting reports in past labeling LT as a very good #4, but I’m unable to find them. My apologies for ever referring to them.
Starting to look better. Need to get O’Neill going. Goldy, DeJong, O’Neill,
and Carlson could be a formidable middle of the lineup someday.O’Neill should come around. That .135 BABIP is comically low. The good news is that he’s putting the ball in play. If he keeps his K rate around 20% he will be excellent.

All for an improved Bader. Hope it happens. He’s seems to have left out however (or at least deemphasized) Bader’s 2019 offensive performance.
