I don’t see how both Dean and Ravelo could fit among the 28 (without other changes like a trade or injury). I am not even sure how Thomas fits and he was clearly ahead of Dean before they all got sick. Ravelo is different with no minor league options, but his recovery could be s l o w e r …

ParticipantRavelo was the most reliable bat at Memphis last year. Dean was excellent with the Grasshoppers, average for the Hammerheads, so so for the Jumbo Schrimp, but lit it up for the Baby Cakes in 2019.
He’s ready for another shot.August 31, 2020 at 1:10 pm #137843Lotsa guys deserve chances. Please illustrate how they would both fit on the roster because I don’t see it. I sense Dean’s best 2020 hope would be injuries to others. In reality, the two players overlap as right-handed hitting first basemen-outfielders. But because Ravelo has the experience edge and no options, he should get the priority (assuming they are ready at a similar pace). Nogowski would be the logical guy sent down.
August 31, 2020 at 3:32 pm #137884Interesting stat from Cardinals media relations:
St. Louis (10-0) is Major League Baseball’s only team to be undefeated when scoring five or more runs in a game this season.
August 31, 2020 at 3:41 pm #137886
jj-cf-stlParticipantSpeaks well of our pitching, or, we’ve had 10 less opportunities (games played) to lose a game scoring 5 or more 😉

ParticipantAAA stats –
Dean – .331/.398/.546/.944
Thomas – .270/.342/.472/.814Why is Thomas rated over Dean?
August 31, 2020 at 3:50 pm #137889For the 100,000th time, because MLB teams do not make personnel decisions based on minor league slash lines. If they did, they could eliminate dozens of jobs, though.
August 31, 2020 at 3:54 pm #137890When Carlson was brought up, Dean and Ravelo became much more expendable. Their 40 man spots are in jeopardy when people get healthy. And Thomas should get a chance, when he comes back. Perhaps Thomas in center and Carlson in left, along with ugggg Fowler.
August 31, 2020 at 4:03 pm #137894bccran
ParticipantFor the 100,001st time, it’s a legitimate question based upon facts. Who has the best record, and the higher ceiling?
August 31, 2020 at 5:56 pm #137912bccran, you like to point out ages:
Dean – almost 27
Thomas – barely 25If you look at their stats through the same age, they are very similar. However, Thomas has shown more power by the same age in their careers. Dean has had almost twice as many plate appearances as Thomas in AA and AAA.
August 31, 2020 at 7:54 pm #137958bccran
ParticipantYou’re right, Forsch. Dean kinda reminds me of Ryan Ludwick and Jose Martinez. Late bloomers who produced when they got a good chance.
August 31, 2020 at 8:13 pm #137967That may apply to Thomas, as well. Although, he could still be younger when given that chance.
August 31, 2020 at 8:42 pm #137986bccran
ParticipantI like the presence of Thomas at the plate. Better than his 2 compadres.
September 1, 2020 at 7:59 am #138029bccran
ParticipantThomas looks like a professional, disciplined hitter at the plate. That sets him apart from several of the other young guys.

ParticipantTyler Kinzy (VEB) on Fowler:
his lowest average exit velocity since Statcast began publicizing data in 2015, and the highest strikeout rate and lowest walk rate of his career. By all accounts, he’s probably not going to keep up a .362 wOBA or .848 OPS. The shortened season doesn’t make a small sample size any more or less reflective of a player’s true talent level than it would in a typical year. To some extent, I’d imagine a desire to appease veterans, especially those on larger contracts, is a factor,
September 1, 2020 at 8:48 am #138043So, Ny, what would you do as the manager? Would you actually bench the OF with the best RESULTS so far this season because an analysis of the stats suggest he MIGHT digress in the future?
Even bringing up the salary point is a red herring. That may be why he was playing when the season began. The reason he is playing now is because of production – he leads the team in home runs and is just one off the team lead in RBI.
Is that really someone who should be benched? And who did Mr. Kinzy recommend be played instead?
Calling out Fowler now and the manager’s motivation in playing him when there is an entire lineup of lower achievers on offense suggests that this person might have an agenda.
What I have seen on this board recently is multiple posters suggesting Fowler should be returned to the top part of the batting order. Why? It ain’t his salary. It is because right now, he is one of the team’s better performers. If that changes later, then deal with it then.

ParticipantI WAS PUTTING THIS COMMENT TOGETHER BEFORE READING BRIAN’S WORDS (WHICH I EXPECTED WOULD SOON FOLLOW).
In Fowler’s defense, this in yesterday’s PD Q&A:
COMMISH: Dexter Fowler has been one of the Cardinals’ best players this season and surely their most productive outfielder. No need to consider trading him now if the Cardinals think they can compete for a playoff spot and they do think they can.
All in all Fowler deserves to be playing when the other options have been disappointing. The Q&A also suggested he be moved up in the order. I wouldn’t mind seeing that.

ParticipantSo Brian we agree on this matter.

jj-cf-stlParticipantIn the last two games DeJong has gone from a 96 ops+ to a 136. He’s at just 58 PA’s now so big ops+ swings in either direction are possible.
B. Miller is cooling off recently. He’s gone from a 188 ops+ to 153 in his last two games, which is still excellent. He’s 0 for 10 with 4/4 BB/K his last 14 PA’s. He’s at 74 PA’s on the season.
Molina dropped from a 92 ops+ to a 79 with an 0 for 4 last night. He’s at 71 PA’s now.
Goldy jumped from a 164 ops+ to a 180 with a can’t get me out game last night in five PA’s. He’s leading the club with 107 PA’s.
Team ops+ is 95
11-0 when scoring 5 runs or more, which is 42% of the 26 games played. I think that’s a pretty good % for what’s viewed as a middling offense.

ParticipantGlad to see Dexter doing well vs. the unproven young OFers who aren’t doing so well.
September 1, 2020 at 10:04 am #138078No problem, Ny. I interpreted your posting on Mr. Knizy’s comments as an endorsement of them. I should not have assumed – but they were easy to question.
September 1, 2020 at 10:23 am #138084Glad to see Dexter doing well vs. the unproven young OFers who aren’t doing so well.
Fowler: 72 PA – 2 doubles, 4 HR – 6 BB:19 SO – .277/.347/.492/.840
Bader: 54 PA – 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR – 6 BB:16 SO – .200/.333/.467/.800
Edman: 98 PA – 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR – 6 BB: 18 SO – .261/.367/.364/.700
O’Neill: 77 PA – 2 doubles, 3 HR – 8 BB: 19 SO – .164/.273/.328/.601
Carlson: 73 PA – 3 doubles, 1 HR – 5 BB: 21 SO – .176/.233/.265/.498
Thomas: 5 PA – 2 BB: 1 SO – .000/.400/.000/.400Now, small and extremely small sample sizes apply, but it you want to put the best team on the fiel this year, Carlson needs to be sent to the alternative training site.
When a player gets hot, like Bader did last week, you do not sit him the entirety of the following week, especially for a guy whose OPS rivals Fowler’s Slugging %.
The best thing that can happen for Bader & O’Neill is they are traded to teams that will let them play through their slumps.

ParticipantLA –
Carlson has a pass because he’s been promoted early, with little experience for the 21 year old at AAA. Lane has a pass because he’s been out. Edman is contributing. Fowler’s doing fine so far. The other 2 are a different story.September 1, 2020 at 10:41 am #13808714NyquisT
ParticipantBW… I guess if I were you I would have made the same interpretation. You have to give credit where credit is due. Fowler is finally earning part of his salary.(a small part… its a huge chunk of change). I don’t remember him being such a controversial figure before arriving in St. Louis. For two full seasons he was a detriment to the team just by being in the lineup. Not to be repetitious but he came here with a mountain of hype and fanfare none of which has been demonstrated. But for now he adds some stability in our OF. I still don’t feel there should be any cheer leading for an adequate underachiever.
September 1, 2020 at 11:11 am #138090bccran
ParticipantDexter is somewhat understandable. He came here after achieving his long time dream of being on a World Series winner. In the third largest city in the U.S., that hadn’t had a World Series winner since 1908. The ether must have been phenomenal.
