The Cards were shut out the last 6 innings of last night’s game against a sub par team. They lost because the offense stopped scoring.

If the message wasn’t loud and clear about our offense before, today and this evening’s displays made it much louder and much clearer.
If you don’t have much of an offense, you’re too razor thin. If your defense and/or pitching let you down in a game, you’re pretty much toast. As we could see on 8/27/2020.
It’s not Forsch. But the lack of offense from last season continues this season.
Mo rolled the dice on significant improvement from Carpenter, O’Neill, Bader, etc.
It hasn’t happened yet. Sure hope it does. Our pitchers need some runs to work with.I know our offense isn’t great but it really wasn’t great last year either and yet we made it to the FINAL FOUR. How did we do that? We did it with good pitching and great defense and some speed. The biggest difference I see with this team is the defense has gone south in a hurry.
Miller has a nice bat but he should be DH ONLY. DeJong, Wong, and Bader should play everyday because of their defense. Edman hasn’t looked great on defense this year. I think Carp has looked better at 3B than Edman or Miller and I didn’t think I would ever say that.
The problem with the defense is hard to figure. We have the same players except for Brad Miller. Maybe it’s because they are out of synch from the quarantine, or maybe the lack of spring training set them back. Great defense is a thing of beauty, but all the errors we’re seeing this year make the game ugly.
11-11, 22 games. So during a real season we’d be starting the fourth week of games, for a 6 month season.
I don’t think we’re a 98 ops+ club no more than we’re a 135 era+ club. These are extremely small samples. Goldy leads the club w/90 PA’s, roughly 18% of a 502 PA normal qualifier.
Draw the conclusions you’d like, but they’re still sss stats.
FYI, the 2019 Cards, as non-pitchers, were also a 98 ops+, so I guess we rolled the dice last season too.
We rolled the dice that Carp would come back strong, DeJong would improve, and the young OFers O’Neill, Bader, and Thomas would mature and become solid/major contributors. That’s a big roll.

Another variable that seemed very iffy was Edman sustaining his performance from last year.
So even without Ozuna this season, we’re currently the same offense (98 ops+) in this very small sample size. I guess we’ve been rolling big dice a while now 🙂
If you compare the 2020 team to the 1982 team, offensively, they are about the same. Both are strong with OBA but weak in SLG and overall OPS.
