The Cardinals claim to set their payroll based on fan attendance, and there were no fans this year. So, if anything, I expect them to make salary cuts this year.

That means Brad Miller will not return, plus we have the contracts of Brett Cecil and Mike Leake coming off the books, with a salary decrease coming for Yadi. Those will be partially offset by salary increases for DeJong and Wong, plus arbitration increases for arb eligible players.

In other words, the only thing I expect the Cardinals to do is maybe add a pitcher from overseas.

As for Bader, he had the 4th highest OBP on the team.

I will precede my following statements by agreeing with gscottar that this thread is a bit overdone, but…

Fact. Ozuna was just 7% better than an MLB-average hitter in his two years with the Cardinals. To suggest he was in the same class as those others mentioned in team history is just not accurate.

Ozuna’s exit velocity last year was elite, to the point that many predicted his breakout this year no matter where he played.

I find it stunning how all these players are middling while here and then suddenly become sluggers when they find themselves in bandbox stadiums.

Ozuna played in Marlins park prior to coming to St. Louis. Marlins park is every bit the pitchers park Busch Stadium is.

Would you consider this a good trade, based on Ozuna’s time in St Louis?

The flaw in the trade was that Mozeliak traded for an injured player, who he knew to be injured. That DID affect his plate performance in St. Louis, and given that he injured his shoulder diving for a ball, undoubtedly affected his defense. His exit velocity last year (and some of his throws) suggested his shoulder was returning to normal. Though some of his reads in the OF were downright comical.

The Cardinals should go after some of the Dodgers’ scouts that were laid off

But one thing you might do if the club sinks over this weekend is bring Carlson back and let him play out the season as the right fielder.

What did Carlson do that you want him back up?

but I figured they would be more towards the progressive/analytics side

I don’t get the impression the Cardinals are all that advanced in analytics.

When I think of analytically inclined teams, I am thinking Astros and Dodgers. I’ve seen numerous reports of pitchers going to the Astros and being amazed at how they prep them for games. The Dodgers have been using split advantages for years. Neither of those attributes have I heard associated with the Cardinals.

Batting average doesn’t know the difference between a single and a HR. Does that difference matter to anyone reading this?

OPS+ knows the difference. These 9 players lead the team in PA’s, here’s their ops+.

    Goldschmidt 155
    Miller 145
    DeJong 118
    Bader 103
    Edman 100
    Wong 85
    Carpenter 79
    O’Neill 75
    Molina 71

That doesn’t fit the narrative that Bader is terrible and will never make progress

Carlson was given a chance to inject some offense into that lineup when Thomas went out and O’Neill and Bader struggled so badly.

Bader wasn’t struggling when he was benched in favor of Carlson. His OPS was 400 points higher than Carlson’s.

So, after tonight, 9 of Bader’s 12 hits have gone for extra bases.

Shildt ought to be raging mad about that.

Bader beautifully takes one oppo for a stand-up lead-off double. He’s swinging the bat better, seriously better. I think the tough love Bull Shildt gave him is paying off. Bull still pushing all the right buttons.

Yeah. He’s hitting again. They better bench him for 20 days this time.

The Cards changed the lineup when they weren’t scoring many runs. Since they took Bader and O’Neill out of the lineup they’re hitting, scoring runs, and winning. Is it a coincidence?

Actually, there is a difference between causation and correlation.

    Remember that .945 ops? 9 AB’s later it’s at .796.

Would you agree that it is easier for a player to get on a roll when playing everday rather than getting one PA per game?

And why bench Bader as soon as he gets on a roll? That makes no sense. Think of all the years we played a player who is terrible at defense, simply because he was hitting. Here, we have a player who is great at defense, and who was starting to hit, and they benched him. What kind of signal does that send to the player? A .945 OPS isn’t good enough to keep you in the lineup, so we’ll replace you with a guy with a .501 OPS?

Is Bader a different player today than the one who played in almost 300 games from 2017-2019?

Is Kolten Wong the same hitter today he was from 2013-2016?

Is Matt Carpenter the same hitter today he was from 2012-2018?

As for Carlson being a priority – why is his playing time a priority over winning?

Glad to see Dexter doing well vs. the unproven young OFers who aren’t doing so well.

    Fowler: 72 PA – 2 doubles, 4 HR – 6 BB:19 SO – .277/.347/.492/.840
    Bader: 54 PA – 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR – 6 BB:16 SO – .200/.333/.467/.800
    Edman: 98 PA – 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR – 6 BB: 18 SO – .261/.367/.364/.700
    O’Neill: 77 PA – 2 doubles, 3 HR – 8 BB: 19 SO – .164/.273/.328/.601
    Carlson: 73 PA – 3 doubles, 1 HR – 5 BB: 21 SO – .176/.233/.265/.498
    Thomas: 5 PA – 2 BB: 1 SO – .000/.400/.000/.400

Now, small and extremely small sample sizes apply, but it you want to put the best team on the fiel this year, Carlson needs to be sent to the alternative training site.

When a player gets hot, like Bader did last week, you do not sit him the entirety of the following week, especially for a guy whose OPS rivals Fowler’s Slugging %.

The best thing that can happen for Bader & O’Neill is they are traded to teams that will let them play through their slumps.

It’s bad enough the Cardinals consistently play Carlson instead of Bader & O’Neill, but now Edman, too?

Should have just traded Bader & O’Neill at the deadline.

How many career plate appearances do each of them have? How many regular starts do each of them have in the majors?

Those are biased questions, because they have more to do with time in the majors (Bader) and injuries (O’Neill) than anything else.

If you are looking at a season when performance should dictate playing time, Carlson should have the least amount of PAs this year – by far…Instead, since he was called up, he is playing everyday at the expense of O’Neill and Bader – the two who were supposedly auditioning to be part of the future of the club this year…And then you have situations like yesterday, where they pinch hit Carlson for Bader…

But do you really think Bader was given a chance to figure it out last year? He had 400 PA’s. Everybody wants to run him out of town because of hos miserable his sophomore season was at the plate, yet’ he was still on track to hit 18 HR over 600 PA’s and his OBP wasn’t significantly different than the prior year. The only thing that was down was his slugging %, which was driven by a lack of doubles…

I would argue neither Bader nor O’Neill have been given the opportunity that Carlson has been given this year. Usually, it is because of veterans blocking them. Now, it’s because the Cardinals want to speed the development of their next big thing at the expense of players who should be more major-league ready.

However, other than Bader, most of the other young players haven’t been given that opportunity to “figure it out” in the majors.

    O’Neill has 77 PA’s, Carlson 66 and Bader 52…

The Cardinals had intended for this to be a year to see what they have in the outfield. So, let the kids play. If there was ever a year to let the kids play through their struggles, this is it.

    Bader made the error, yes.

    But then Cabrera became unhinged.

And Schildt brought Webb into a high leverage situation. Webb does not do well in high leverage situations.

Once the Reds had the lead, Schildt brought in Woodford, who was the better option with the bases loaded.

This is about the third loss I will hang on Schildt (Ramirez, 2 Webb losses).
