The last 1/2 of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and until mid August of 2019 the Cardinals were the very definition of average. That was 4 straight years.
They got hot late in 2019 and made an unexpected Cinderella run to the NLCS where they got handled. Last year they were, for the most part, a .500 team that ended up being the cream of the crap in a horrid division.
None of what we are seeing today is new. Let’s face it, the Cardinals are not a good team and have not been since the first half of 2015 – 6 years ago.
The ‘If they could stay healthy’ argument / observation is moot because the past 2-3 years have shown that isn’t going to happen.
Even when healthy, the team is deeply flawed but at least you could squint your eyes at it and say, ‘we just need a couple of pieces’….now, the list has grown or will grow to half the roster.
When evaluating a team I always look at the ‘Ifs’.
If this player can stay healthy; if that player can return to form; If this prospect pans out…
In my experience, if you get past three ‘ifs’ then you are generally in trouble.
Ok.
So, no good baseball team ever blows a 5-1 lead?
Without looking I’d bet every WS champion since the league began blew a few big leads during the course of their season.
Even when fully healthy this edition of the Cardinals had holes and question marks but so does almost every other team.
I agree that, for whatever reasons, the FO seems to have done a poor job constructing the roster – some of it looks like plain old bad luck though.
Gotta hope the Cards can use smoke and mirrors to stay in touch with the division leader until they can get healthy – IF they can get healthy….
When healthy the team should compete for this division – on paper at least.
The pitching staff is currently a flaming wreck.
Outside of acquiring another arm via the trade route I’m not sure there is much to do about it.
Mikolas is probably done, Flaherty and KK will eventually be back. Gant and C-Nart – may be one or the other sticks. Wainwright is 40 – let that sink in.
Team really needs 2 more starters going into next season.
As long as they don’t get more than 6-7 games out there will be a chance to catch up over a month or so.
Too many injuries and no depth is killing the team for now.
Relying on Mikolas was dumb but the other staff injuries are just bad luck.
There is still plenty of season left but they must stay in touch with first place team so that a late season surge can salvage the season.
Well, its June and I still don’t have a read on the Cards or the Cubs or the Brewers.
I do know that the Cards entire starting rotation has to among the most fragile in MLB.
Lets face it. Since the first half of the 2015 season we’ve been treated to mostly average baseball from the Cards.
The NL Central is a bad division. The four playoff teams last year managed 1 win between them.
Any of the Cubs, Cards, or Brewers could win the division but will not be a viable threat to advance in the playoffs – sure, anything can happen in a playoff series but you take my meaning.
This season is what it is. 2022 should be, at least on paper, much better. Of course, I am counting on a couple of good off season moves from the front office…..

I think we all know that this is a flawed team but the Central division was garbage last year and looks like garbage this year too so being the tallest midget will still win you the division.
I wish he would retire gracefully. This can’t be about money – it might be about stats but he’s a first ballot HoFer – maybe he just really likes that locker room smell?
It’s still early but not as early as it was, lol.
No need to panic 2-3 weeks ago, no need to start making room for another pennant just yet either.
This team seems to have the ability to grind.
I still think that the Cardinals are using this year to let the outfield sort itself out and that ’22 is when they hope to make a big splash.
If they do anything other than make the playoffs this year I will look at it as a bonus and, while annoying, it won’t be too tragic if they don’t.
In ’22 we are probably looking at Hudson replacing Wainwright and K really pushing if not replacing Molina. Those two cannot keep the wool pulled over father time’s eyes forever.
I really hope he just hangs ’em up. He was never anything close to the player he was for StL in Cali.
They paid him for everything he did as a Cardinal.
Hell, how many times did they even make the post-season while he was there?
How good is Liberatore right now as in, if he were in the majors how do we think he would fare?
I understand that he had loads of talent and potential.
I thought Wainwright wasn’t back with the team until Monday or Tuesday due to Covid-19 contact tracing?
