Let’s keep Maton if trading him isn’t going to make the team better now, or in the future. Enjoy the wins that he will help bring to the ball club during these last two months of the season.
I don’t understand the Blaze Jordan for Steven Matz trade. All Jordan does is hit, and hit some more, whether it’s RHP or LHP. According to his stats he has some power, too. The Red Sox traded this guy for Steven Matz?? What is it about this trade that we don’t know yet. The Red Sox drafted Jordan in 2020 out of high school, so he’s still only 22 years old (turns 23 on December 19
This tells us that Jesus Baez meniscus tear could be treated arthroscopically, not requiring major surgery and a long rehab.
It also tells us that Dohm’s arm is okay. It will be interesting to see what Elissalt shows up with at Peoria. Lots of good news. Our
Top of Rotation /’stopper’, Gray, isn’t pitching any better than Mikolas this year. But then, if we didn’t have him, we’d have a four man rotation, I guess. Kudos to MO for thinking ahead.Loved Siani’s defense when he was up.
It’s going to be really hard to get any kind of starting pitcher on a one year deal I wouldn’t want to sign a retread up for 2 or 3 years. It’s possible that they will have to bring Mikolas back for one more year while they figure out if Leahy can be a starter and while they figure out if Hjerpe, Matthews, maybe Zach Thompson, can be a rotation piece. Too bad about Roby. He could have been very helpful in sorting things out.
I’m actually surprised that they could move Matz. I thought his performance Tuesday night against the Marlins killed whatever chance there was of moving him.
Maton has been pitching well enough this year to expect 3 years and 10-15M$. The Cardinals are not paying him that much money, But if the Cardinals can’t get a good return in trading him, I’d just as soon keep him and win a few more games here in da Lou.
Jose Altuve is listed as 5’6” tall.
At least, the players we got are young and appear to be high ceiling guys. For me, that’s better than guys that have already hit their ceiling, and we pretty much know what we got and it’s nothing to get excited about.
July 30, 2025 at 9:44 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #110 thread – Wednesday, July 30 vs. Miami Marlins #288988If Bozo, I mean Pozo, wasn’t so overweight and could run a little bit, he would have had two infield hits tonight. He does have decent bat control, it seems, and can put the bat on the ball.
In Wednesday’s With Walton and Reis, Kyle Reis said that Crooks is definitely not ready for the bigs yet. If that’s the case, the Cardinals absolutely must find a backup catcher for 2026.
Just want to add that Kyle sounds very well informed and knowledgeable about Cardinals’ prospects. He doesn’t like Nathan Church, for example, but he backs it up with a confident explanation for why he doesn’t think Church is ready.
Trade looks decent for the Cardinals and decent for the Mets. If any of these prospects makes it to the big leagues, it’s a very good trade for the Cardinals. Helsley will certainly help the Mets for the next two or three months, so it’s already a very good trade for the Mets. You have to believe that the Cardinals had other offers for Helsley. Mozeliak and staff judged this to be the best offer.
I can’t remember who said it, but I do remember that there was discussion about his increased velocity after he signed with the Cardinals. As I said in my comment, the decreased velocity was mentioned in this passage week’s Wednesdays With Walton.
In this past week’s Wednesday With Walton, there was discussion about Mathews’ fastball velocity which, this year, has been around 92-93. Last year, when he was leading the league strikeouts, it was in the high 90’s. But there was no explanation for the reduced velocity. Is there any way to find out what happened to Matthews’ fastball?
That sounds to me like Gray doesn’t want to be traded. But, if there was a serious WS contender that could give him a realistic chance of winning a ring, he might approve the trade. Previously, he has always ruled out being traded, but this time he gave it a little wiggle room.
FWIW – Roby is only 23 years old. He turns 24 on Sept. 18. When he’s ready to pitch in 2027, he’ll be 25 years old and, probably, fully healed.
If the surgery is successful, as expected, we should have him ready for the 2027 season, even if the 2027 season starts late because of negotiations for a new CBA.
July 28, 2025 at 10:45 am in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #107 thread – Sunday, July 27 vs. San Diego Padres #288610Not sure how I arrived at 37M. I guess I got it from ‘memory’. It looks like he gets only
27M next year, of which the Rockies pay 5M.
Thanks.According to Baseball Reference, Fedde has banked 17.5M in the last 3 years. I’m happy for the guy. And he’s still in his early 30’s, and if things don’t work out for him next year, he can go out and get a real job if he wants to.
There is no sense in trading Helsley and Maton away for something that is not a good return. We might just as well keep them and finish out the year winning those five or ten games that those two would bring. That would at least keep us in contention for that wild card.
July 27, 2025 at 6:56 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #107 thread – Sunday, July 27 vs. San Diego Padres #288563I think it was the third inning where Arenado hit a ball up the middle that the second baseman had to catch backhanded, then spin and throw. If Arenado had been running hard, I think he would have beat the throw to first base. That kind of attitude makes it hard for a team to win. He gets paid 37M in 2026.
Agree that there are other teams in sell mode. Still, Helsley and Maton would be a great addition to any bullpen. Just looking over Detroit’s top 30, a combination of Bryce Rainer and Owen Hall for Helsley and Maton might work for St. Louis and Detroit.
Both prospects are high ceiling/high risk. The high ceilings would make this trade interesting for the Cardinals and the high risk, mostly because of their age, might be enough for the Tigers to justify this deal.Obviously, this is all speculation. But I did hear the Tigers mentioned as a possible trade partner for the Cardinals today. As far as prospects, I pulled Rainer and Hall out of thin air.
Adding Helsley and Maton would be a really big addition to the bullpen of a World Series hopeful like Detroit. It might be what the Tigers need to put them over the top. Should Detroit give the Cardinals the prospects that they want, or should they stand pat and go with what they’ve got, and hope that they don’t regret it?
I can’t see Donovan being traded. We need him to play 3B after the 2026 season. Helsley won’t bring much of a return, so there’s no sense in giving him up since he’s still our 9th inning guy. Romero probably has the most value. But giving him up now would bring a lot of misery to the bullpen for the rest of this year, plus we need him to be our closer next year. Gorman is injured, so he’s not getting traded. All in all, I don’t see where the Cardinals have anybody that they can trade at this year’s trade deadline.
July 19, 2025 at 9:10 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #99 thread –Saturday, July 19 at Arizona Diamondbacks #287711Agree, bikemike. When he first came up, he looked confident and fearless. Then, he got humbled by the down and away breaking ball.
I hoping that in a couple of years,
Westerholdt will be at 2B, Donovan will be at 3B, Bernal will be catching, maybe Baez will be in the outfield, and VS II will be closer to his ceiling. If the pitching shows up, this team should be able to contend. Lots of changes to come before 2027, though.Really enjoyed today’s show.
