Where does JJ need to bat long term?
    Leadoff, middle order?

I could see Wetherholt being the opening day 2B next year or at least an early season callup in May, especially if Donnie gets traded over the winter. There is no reason to call him up now though. As Chitown said we might need the 40 man spot over the winter. If they call JJ up now it would be purely for marketing and ticket selling reasons.

I think Bloom will off Gorman and NA and start JJ at third.

I read “but I know better” as a compliment.
Bling is bulletproof. Stuff bounces off him

Thank you JJ. The “I know better” meant that I know Bling has complete comprehension of what he read. He just wanted to bad mouth anylitics. Some more. Bad on me for being tired of negative things about the team I love. Everyone whose followed them for a minute or two is embarrassed right now. JJ Wetherholt symbolizes hope and a new era.

Long term? It depends on whether he hits ML pitching long term, meaning once opposing pitchers and orgs get him figured out. If he follows the DeJong, Carlson, Gorman, Walker model, he will bat 7-9 long term. Or, Bloom will take over and abracadabra-poof the system can instantly produce an impact bat for the first time in a decade. I admit I do not know which it will be.

That is one possibility but if he wants to acquire a decent starter without opening up BDW’s checkbook he will have to trade Donnie and/or Burly.

I feel sure Burly will be gone because of his limited usefulness, offensively and defensively. I also think Donovan will remain mainly due to his defensive versatility without being a black hole in the batting order. There is going to be a shocking lack of depth next year and he will be important toward making that work.

I think Wetherholt ends up hitting third in the order in about 3 years.

I am going to guess the opening day lineup in 2028 starts out:

    Church CF
    Winn SS
    Wetherholt 3B
    Jordan 1B
    Herrera DH
    Walker RF

I’m not sure what will play out at 2B, C, and LF. I also predict that will be a tough first 6.

Westerholt just hit a 2 run dinger.

Quite the opposite.Donovan will be gone next year. They should have traded him at the deadline but he will still have some value. His metrics won’t match up with his salary. Defensive versatility is cheap. Think Saggese. So is Burleson. He will still be here. Also, I know how you hate those pesky metric but Burleson is better than Donovan offensively. And Gorman will be catching him shortly. They move Contreras if at all possible.

You left out the bolded part. It gives it a completely different meaning. That was convienent on your part for whatever your agenda is. Common technique in today’s journalism.

The bolded part doesn’t change the fact that you are slinging personal insults for absolutely zero reason.

Read the rules of the board.

Quite frankly, Brian should put you on time out.

I find Bling knowledgeable and entertaining. He riles me up sometimes. I get over it. I did not insult him. That your interpretation.

    So, about Wetherholt…

The kid seems to know what he’s doing at the plate, which is more than can be said about most in the system lately. I like him at 2B but I can understand the rush to push him to 3B (which is nuts considering in 2021 we had Arenado at 3B and all that talent in the pipeline as backup). He will be in Memphis the rest of the season, as he should be, with a good chance to make the big league club out of spring training. Unfortunately, his profile isn’t the type that usually wins rookie of the year, so it may be tough sledding trying to get that draft pick unless he hits .330 or something.

Gorman wasn’t considered a hack at 3B coming up so I’d be a bit surprised if he’s not the third sacker if they find a taker for Arenado (and I think he’ll be fine there with full reps). Like some others, I’d use Donovan (or maybe Burleson, though the return would be more a #5ish starter for him) to grab a starter for the rotation via trade.

I hope Gorman turns into a decent 3b and a power bat that can hit .260+.

Right now he’s neither. He’s made quite a few throwing errors but even worse – he appears to have very limited range – he simply doesn’t get to balls that, while not errors, are extra hits for the opposition.

Maybe he’ll improve all the way around – I’m rooting for him.

So -Wetherholt can slot on at either 2b or 3b?

I think the hope is that JJ could play 2B or 3B. Otherwise, he will have to stay in Memphis! But he has only played a handful of games at third so far. The rest of this season should help him be more ready in all phases.

    Two camps on Gorman:
    1) the BA is too low and the K% is too high.
    2) the HR% and BB% lead the club on a near minimum salary.

CB gets this call and it’s complicated.

I’m rooting for him, too. But, truth be told, his range at 2B wasn’t that good, either…. and then there are those atrocious throwing errors. He’s still young and he’s been improving as a hitter. He’ll make his millions as somebody’s DH, IMHO.

I’m thinking that Wetherholt is our second baseman going forward. I still like Donovan at third base although you’d like to see more power out of a corner infielder. Saggese is my second pick for third base. I’m not convinced that he has the defense for 3B. But he has not at all reached his ceiling as a hitter, IMO.

I think JJ plays second no matter what. Still have another month for Gorman to shake off the rust or not. Either way looks like he’s getting the chance.

In my opinion, the Cardinals need players who can OPS at least .750 or play solid defense somewhere. Preferably they would be be able to do both. Gorman still falls short in both of those camps.

So then we have 3 DH’s and a second baseman who can avg .750 currently, and it’s very possible our All-Star Donny (.750) falls of the list too.
If D makes that big of difference, Arenado is our savior, and Siani should be an everyday player.
