It is being floated that the Cardinals are looking to add Flambner Valdez and Dylan Cease in the off-season.
August 12, 2025 at 9:39 am #290346Floated by who? Anyone credible?
Along with Gallen, they are the best SPs slated to become free agents this fall. Why would we think the Cards will spend enough to get one, let alone two of them?
August 12, 2025 at 10:28 am #290347I would be shocked if they put an offer in on either one. I am expecting them to find one or two mddling FA SPs and one or two middling RPs who they have found flaws with and that they believe can be corrected. I expect the contracts to be either a a one-year deal or one-year deal with a club option for a second year. IMO, the club is not close to agreeing to any large, multi-year contract signings.

Slaten! Barstool! Lol
They aren’t going to dabble in that market and the risk isn’t worth the reward unless it’s on a show it deal and it will be too rish for our blood. My best guess is we’ll dabble in the Collin Rea, Bassitt, Merrill Kelly, Tyler Anderson, Mad Max, Verlander market. Someone who will likely take a modest 1 year deal with incentives and a a modest buy out and can be traded if they show any value.
August 12, 2025 at 10:39 am #290349I would be very surprised if they signed any FA to more than a one year deal which means it is going to be a veteran trying to hang on or someone rebounding from a significant injury. The most likely way they would acquire a pitcher with multiple years of control is through a trade.
August 12, 2025 at 10:44 am #290350Be surprised?

Pallante???Unless they move Leahy to a starter and go cheap and trust that Pallante can recapture the glory of 24. You might want to get a starter. If you move Kyle to the rotation you better go out and get a good pen guy via trade or FA to replace him. You don’t really have anything in the minors you can trust that isn’t injured that you can just plug and play until the 2nd half of 26.(Matthews) Roby might not even get protected. You got a couple guys in AA who are at least 2 seasons away and Hjerpe won’t at least show us some recovery good form until this time next year. Yup! We have some depth issues in our minors. Not enough ready to contribute now or much of next season.

KeepComingBackParticipantThe Cease Valdez float wasn’t by the Cardinals. Google clickbait story.
August 12, 2025 at 1:47 pm #290355It seems highly unlikely the team would add Valdez and fairly unlikely they would go after Cease or Gallen. You’re paying today’s value for past performance on all 3 with future performance likely to be worse than past performance – especially extended future performance. No sense in taking that risk when the budget is tight.
That said, we don’t really know what the team will do given all the new decision makers. Yes, Mr. 51% is still at his desk. But most of the other voices are new. I believe they probably will sign a 3-4 year starting pitcher contract just to have a long term veteran in the rotation after Gray departs. Plus, they need the reliable depth that brings given all the injuries they have had in the minors and the setbacks that has brought. But they could get some less reliable depth with 2 or more scrap heap signings if they choose to go that route. It’s hard to guess what Bloom and team will want to do. With Mozeliak, I could usually take a pretty intelligent guess because of his previous patterns. For the first time in a long time, I have little to no idea. I’m guessing none of us on this forum does.

jj-cf-stlParticipantThere’s still plenty of history to follow.
2mil spent on the player budget in the last 20 months.
A deadline reclaim of 6.5mil from this seasons budget.August 12, 2025 at 3:13 pm #290359I agree that there’s zero chance of the Cardinals signing Dylan Cease or Framber Valdez. Cease’s numbers aren’t even that good and Valdez is 31 years old old, turning 32 in November, and the pundits are saying that the benchmark his agents will probably be using is the 14.5M$-31.5M$ (203.5M$) that Max Fried will be getting over the last seven years of his contract which encompasses his age 32-38 years old seasons. No sense in even giving those two pitchers a second thought about signing with the Cardinals. That’s not to say that one of the moronic owners won’t do it, though.
My guess is still that they bring Mikolas back for 10-12M$ for a year while Hjerpe, Roby, Matthews round into shape and Mautz, Henderson, maybe Hence emerge.

ParticipantI see stuff like this all the time, some kind of automatic click bait stuff. Just best to wait n see
August 12, 2025 at 8:13 pm #290377The FA pitcher I would want them to take a look at at least is Michael King. He won’t be as expensive as Cease, Valdez, Suarez (top 3 in my book). King likely will get a nice contract, but not nearly as much as the other 3 with a limited history starting.
I doubt they go after King either though and would expect them to find a dumpster dive project, but I hope the new front office will try to bring in a #3. Then let the #5 spot be a full competition between Pallante, Leahy, Mathews.

jj-cf-stlParticipant3B is a logjamb. 2B and SS are not available. CF is weak, with weak depth. Lets move JJ to 3B. Brilliant.

stlcard25ParticipantCease will cost some money, but he’s also the type of pitcher the team needs if they are going to have shakier defense going forward. He is following a similar career arc to Zack Wheeler, who has held up super well into his mid 30s.
I don’t expect that they will sign someone like him…but they would easily have the budget and he would be a welcome addition to the rotation. Makes Gray your #2 (which is ideal), Libby the 3, McGreevy the 4 and hopefully Quinn taking the 5 by mid season. Pallante becomes depth and you have some hope for guys like Henderson, Mautz, and the sore arm gang to backfill the future.
Like jnevel, I expect them to sign a low end veteran or two to fill the rotation. It’s frustrating that they’ll spend $25m on those two when for a few dollars more they could have a real upgrade, but it’s the BDW III (who likely only cares about the bottom line unlike Jr who at least cares a little about winning) way.
August 13, 2025 at 11:04 am #290426Dustin May threw 6 innings of shutout baseball last night. He might be a decent bounce back guy on a short term deal.
Another possiblity would be packaging two of our better hitters (Donnie and Burly) to send to a team who has several good young pitchers but might need a little more offense. I am looking at you Seattle. Herrera would be another possiblity but I would like to hold onto him if possible.
August 13, 2025 at 11:23 am #290427I wonder if Bloom will go for Asian League bouncebacks like Mikolas and Fedde.
August 13, 2025 at 11:33 am #290429
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf they come cheap, that’s very possible. We are at 132mil. If that transfers to 2026, Bloom has about 15mil to spend. Go get ’em tiger!
August 13, 2025 at 11:45 am #290432Its not like we would be the only org looking for them.

ParticipantWhat this organization needs is a few over-achievers. I miss those kind of players.

ParticipantWhere did they stick very recently acquired Pioneer-Leauger Andrew Sojka?

He seems like a perfect stop gap. Only issue is if he pitches like he did last night the rest of the way he’d likely comment a 2 year deal.
Walker Buehler might be another guy. His option will not be picked up and he will be looking for a home. We could throw him an incentive laden bone. His TJ bounce back is taking longer than expected. I mean if he does ok then you deal him and if he doesn’t the fanbase needs another whipping boy after Mikolas leaves. Lol
August 13, 2025 at 2:25 pm #290464Nyquis – Sojka went to Peoria. Debuted today. 1 for 4 with a double, walk, and steal. Like Blaze Jordan replaced Baker in the organization, Sojka replaced Yeager who was let go the other day.
August 13, 2025 at 2:35 pm #290465
jj-cf-stlParticipantDependable innings should be priority one.
Even a couple guys who can go 90-100 IP, and have a recent track record of durability. They don’t even have to be good trade chips, we need IP.
I don’t expect Bill to pay for “risk” IP, unless it comes dirt cheap.
