    Paid - Annual

I’m thinking that Wetherholt is our second baseman going forward. I still like Donovan at third base although you’d like to see more power out of a corner infielder.

If that is the direction, with Arenado out, why isn’t Gorman playing at second and Donovan at third? Just the opposite is occurring. In the entire 2025 season, Donovan has played zero innings at third base. In fact, he hasn’t played meaningful time there since 2022 (21 starts at 3B).

Further, instead of giving Wetherholt more experience at second at Memphis, why do they have him playing third? Since JJ added third base, he has played only two games at second. If I was in charge and my plan was for him to be the starter at 2B next year, I would have played him more than 20 career games at the position.

To me, their actions speak for themselves.

So then we have 3 DH’s and a second baseman who can avg .750 currently, and it’s very possible our All-Star Donny (.750) falls of the list too.
If D makes that big of difference, Arenado is our savior, and Siani should be an everyday player.

Like I said ideally a player would be able to do BOTH but at a minimum should be able to do one or the other. Doing neither isn’t much help to the club.

Him settling at 3rd may be a good way for Arrenado to waive his No trade, unless he wants to be a backup the rest of his contract

That may be the case although Arenado has thus far generated almost four times the WAR that Gorman has this year. Defense matters. it is also true that Nado is paid much much more, no doubt about that.

Arenados war is built entirely on playing time ONLY. His bat and D are a wash. Arenados war is his contract demanding playing time, ONLY.

Arenado decided to pack it in and take the remainder of the season off.

IMO, Gorman should be DH most of the time. He’s getting better and better at hitting the ball. His throws are embarrassing and his range is inadequate for 3B. As long as my opinion really is just an opinion, I’ll say that Gorman is playing 3B so they can showcase him as trade bait for the coming offseason. I get your logic and it makes sense. But after watching Rolen and Arenado play third base, I have a hard time thinking of Gorman playing there regularly. I will acknowledge that Gorman could be out of synch because he played mostly 3B in college and the minors, and he was taken away from his natural position when Arenado came to town. But I didn’t think his defense at 2B was anything to rave about either. If we take Gorman out of the running for 3B, I don’t know who could handle it other than probably Donovan, so far. Maybe Jesus Baez could, one day. But that’s to be determined.

Maybe we can get two more seasons of Arenado for the his D fans to enjoy.

I get your point. Everybody wants to see a slugger at 3B. So do I. the next two years of Nado’s hitting will be frustrating to say the least. Hope they can trade him over the offseason and let’s see what Donovan looks like at 3B.

Mud, you don’t think Wetherholt can play 3B?

1td, Arenado taking the rest of the season off would be the same as trading him. The Cardinals may have to pay him about the same amount whether he is on the Cardinals or another team.

Well, everyone needs some R&R from time to time. He probably just needs a break in order to relax and unwind from the stress of the everyday work grind. Either that, or he’s a quitter.

I wish they’d try JJ all over the field. Can he play outfield? He should get experience at 3B, SS, 2B, LF. Maybe CF, although it might invoke more injury risk. We don’t have anyone blowing their doors off other than Burleson.

Maybe they are already. If he came up today he’d be at 3B? Nado comes back he could play CF? Maybe Walker is no lock with CB? Who is still here has to ask who would JJ be replacing?

I really think the idea of playing your young star prospect out of position in the majors is one of the dumber things we tend to do.

The easy solution is to put Donovan Herrera Nootbaar Gorman and Burleson in the outfield and/or at DH. Trade the two you like least.

For me, that’s Nootbaar and Burleson.

Start Walker in AAA and let Wetherholt ease in to the majors at his most comfortable position.

Arenado at 3B thru the contract.

I am fine with Wetherholt at 2B or 3B. I would most likely prefer 3B so Donny can be at 2B and the best infield is available with Gorman or Burly at DH with the other traded.

Interesting discussion on JJ Wetherholt from BA on why they bumped him to #5 on their prospect list. Really exciting to hear about him with good defense with great fundamentals and showing upside as well.

    The discussion starts around 3:00.

Arenado has played 16 more games than Gorman. That it is more but I don’t know if it qualifies as significantly more when discussing WAR.

Arenado is by far our best defensive 3B and that isn’t even close. Is it worth the $24M we are paying him this year? No but we know the contract is going to play.

I think he we will be back before this season is over and I wouldn’t get your hopes up of him being traded this winter. Factoring in deferments and money from Colorado he will be owed $19.4M next year and $15M in 2027 and he obviously has the NTC so trading him is still going to be very difficult. I expect him to be our third sacker on opening day 2026.

I think somebody pays about half Arenados salary. We pay the other half with some token throw in prospect by the other team. JMO. If he doesn’t come back this year, i think the odds are even higher he’s gone.

More of the same. Next to nothing on expectations, its demo time. We can lose without any of you too!

I don’t disagree but wanting to trade someone and being able to trade someone are two different things.

Can’t explain exactly why, but I have always imagined Wetherholt as a second baseman. Not sure he has the range and the arm for 3rd. I see Donovan as a top defensive player, not on the level of a Rolen or an Arenado, but top tier at defense. He just lacks some of the power you’d like to see coming from a third baseman. We might have some big time power lining up for the outfield, IMO. Love to see them find a first baseman that hits for big time power, but none in sight so far.

I’ve always envisioned JJ at second too.

This is off topic, but I don’t think it merits its own thread yet. So here’s my burning question… What the heck is 17 year old Kenly Hunter doing ranked in the Cardinals organization’s Top 30??
